Finally got to Stay Here

First time at Rowntree Park and first ever visit to York. Had to adopt the "if you can't beat 'em join 'em" attitude to secure a booking here and was frantically making the on-line booking on 9th December, even though I had no idea at that stage whether I would have to pull out because of work commitments, but we made it and haven't been disappointed.

Very different site to the normal club sites as there is no open space or grass, however with Rowntree Park next door this isn't a problem if the kids need to let off steam.

Fantastic location for visiting York, which was what it was all about for us. We didn't use the car for 3 days walking into the city each day and even the supermarket for provisions. Unfortunately, some of the visitor attractions were closed due to flood damage, but that just means we will have to come back again, so another frantic morning in December.....

Have seen negativity about price. Not sure why. 1 adult and 2 children during the Easter school holiday cost £21.30 a night. Seems fair to me. Will definitely come back at some point, subject to being able to get in of course.

Very popular!

We have used this site several times in the past (10 or more years ago) and it is as good now as it ever was. However it is a victim of it's own success, as getting a whole week booked there is now nearly impossible! The site however is clean, smart and well looked after, it is ideal base for sight seeing the wonderful city of York. The walk along the river toward Selby is very nice, the dogs loved it! Highlights of York are, the City walls, the Minster, the shopping centre (including the wonderful Barnitts, which sells everything including 'fork 'andles!) and of course the dozens of Pubs and eateries. For Curry the 'Mumbai Lounge' is the best, Fact!

Not all it seems

I have been to the Rowntrees site on several occasions. It is the best site for getting into York and is up to the usual CC Club standards. I have only one fault this year and that was the lack of friendliness of the staff I encountered. Yes there is a 1200hrs arrival time. I arrived 9 minutes prior to this only to be told to drive through the site (noting many empty pitches) and out, not to return before 1200hrs. I was lucky to arrive early which with the normal York traffic problems was a real bonus but then encountered this petty individual who wasn't going to be deterred from applying "the law". I asked if I could just stay where I was for the few minutes. No was the reply. I wanted to get shirty but couldn't be bothered. I am now put off from visiting this site again. This is the first time in my 33yrs as a member that this has happened, usually staff are friendly and obliging. It was just luck that I had an early arrival, never again.

Great Location for a Short City Break

Ideally situated site for exploring York on foot, no need to use the car. Consequently this site is very popular which makes it difficult to get booked for full week, hence our shorter than originally planned stay - Sunday to Thursday. Warm welcome from the Wardens who were happy to assist us make the most of our stay. Excellent facilities that were kept spotless despite the site being busy.

Some hopefully helpful details

It's not worth me saying how popular this site is, or how well located it is, but some more pragmatic details might be helpful.  We found that a ten minute walk from the site got us into the city centre, but that does require a short flight of steps or a road crossing, if mobility is an issue.  The local shops (accessed by the back gate) recently won best high street, and it is well deserved. As well as a Sainsburys local (long opening hours), there is an excellent greengrocer, deli, baker and butcher, fish and chips, Dominos and several cafes. The hardware and kitchenware stores are also useful.  The city tour bus also goes along this road (Bishopthorpe Rd), so helpful if you wanted to try this.  No play area or dog walk, but given the excellent Rowntree Park is next door, that's not a disadvantage.  It's also the best shower block on the network in our view, even on Easter Bank Hols, not only was there no queue, there was a choice of free showers.  We'll be going back, it's definitely worth spending and hour one morning in December getting booked!

Great Location. Shame about the Easter price hike.

Our first visit to this site, having been trying to get in for some time. It's location is excellent, being right on the river Ouse, within walking distance of the City. It's well set out and the pitches are a good size. Shower bock facilities are very good, plentiful and of the usual club standard. Our only gripe, which was echoed by many others, was the substantial hike in tariff over the Easter holiday. The York site was always at the top end of CC tariffs anyway, but for the club to exploit the Easter holiday just like other solely commercial enterprises is wrong. We really enjoyed York, but that commercial decision will cause some to doubt the benefits of club membership. We joined it for some exclusivity and some member benefits. Continue taking advantage and people will consider the benefits a little more closely before rejoining.

Back to York

After having caravans, motorhomes including American RV's we decided to go back to our roots and start touring again in a caravan.  We can now 'fit' on Roundtree Park again and feel like we have come 'home'. Brilliant camp for accessing York, no car needed and lovely walks.  The Only complaint we have is that many people feel like we do and it can be a real struggle to book - nothing much we can do about that lol!  We will be visiting again as soon as we can!

Best up to now!

This site surely must have one of the best locations there can be! Fall out of your Caravan almost straight into York City Centre. Just a little walk along the river and you are there. The best and cleanest Toilet/Shower block I have been in, the Staff particularly friendly and helpful made for a most enjoyable stay even though the weather was lousy (no change there then) everywhere, nice, clean and tidy, no litter, no noise, no problem.....a criticism?......it gets booked up real quick....no wonder, so be quick!.....what am I saying??  build another one Caravan Club!

Great City location

Nice clean tidy compact site within short walk of city centre.

Quiet at night, nice toilets etc. Wardens have an electric buggy which is superb if you're having a lie in, much quieter than the usual mini tractors that wake me up on other sites.

Situated next door to a good park with facilities for kids.

Larger vans have pitches picked by the wardens, ours was very nice.

Be aware when you pitch, it's not the usual  "car - van - awning" but "van -awing-car" instead. I had to move after reversing in beautifully, to the wrong position.

Good site for leaving the car put for the week.

Will use again for a cracking city break.

Excellent Site

Would recommend this site to all, The wardens were welcoming, helpful and friendly on arrival.  York itself is only a fifteen minute walk away with all the attractions, shops and museums close at hand too.  can fully understand why this is a very busy site .
