We often use this site to stop on, when we are up visiting family Yorkshire , however this stay turned out differently due to a sudden serious illness of my son. Fortunately we were able to extend our visit.
Its a brilliant site in a super location very convenient for York and its various attractions. The park next door is brilliant for the children and plenty of walking for dogs if you have them. At the time of our visit we did not find the hotel building works intrusive.
There was only one downside to our visit apart from my sons illness, was a incident with a warden which reduced me to tears , but we moved on from that.
The facilities were kept to a very high standard , and the gate at the back of the site to Bishy Road is a godsend.
If you do get visitors to the site they obviously need to be booked in , if the reception is closed you just need to put a note with pitch number and car through the red letter box,
The river was very high at the time of our stay but happily no evacuation.
Superb Site
This was our first visit to this site and it certainly won't be our last. This site is beautifully kept. The facilities were always clean and tidy and excellent quality. The staff were all pleasant and extremely helpful. You couldn't ask for a better location for a city campsite, just a five minute walk along the riverside and you are in the centre of York itself. The only reason that I gave the site a low review for peace and quiet is that there is currently a building site next door which was rather noisy first thing in a morning. I wasn't expecting complete peace and quiet obviously being in a city but the diggers were exceptionally noisy and our caravan pitch was right next to it. Obviously that is something that can't be helped and is nothing to do with the caravan site and it certainly won't be stopping us visiting again! we are looking forward to our next weekend with you in February!
Festive Break
Spent Christmas and New Year at Rowntree as we have done for the past 20 years and once again had no complaints. Excellent facilities and friendly wardens who got into the festive spirit by dressing us as Santa's Little Helpers at the Christmas Eve Soiree in the site office. Boy did they need help to get rid of the mountain of waste left by members. I was quite horrified to see used rugs, clothing and boots left for the wardens to collect - is it really such a hassle to take this home and dispose of it there. The site looked very festive with many of the caravans and motorhomes decorated with lights and decorations. Having read some recent reviews we were fortunately not bothered by the noise from the building site next door as it closed down for several days. Also as previously stated there are some lovely small independent shops in Bishopthorpe Road which is accessed from a gate at the rear of the site. A word of caution though. Do not walk on the pavement when it is dark as it is a minefield of dog poo!! We have been lucky enough to get booked for Christmas 2018 as we can't think of anywhere nicer to go. Hope the same wardens are still there - it was great to be greeted by a smiley face and bad jokes!! Thank You once again for a great time. P.S. and the river stayed at a low level. BONUS!!
Dreadful building works at the moment
On arrival the staff were friendly and helpful. However I was told that as my booking overlapped their financial Year, that I would have to come in and pay separately for my final night, even though I offered to pay there and then. This wasn't a problem for me but I forgot and went out for the day with the kids; I got a phone call reminding me I had the final night to pay for, but unfortunately we'd gone toThe Deep in Hull and would not make it back in time for 5 pm when the reception closed.
They then called my mobile at 9am on the dot and a chap came and knocked on my caravan to tell me I must go and pay, I apologised and said we'd been out for the day etc etc and had got back after 5pm, despite my apology he told me 3 times that I was the last customer to pay, and this had caused so many banking problems etc etc. I thought it was all a bit over the top really, being a club member they have my name & address etc so not like I'm going to flee the country, which was how they made me feel.
Anyhow, the thing about this incident which really enraged me was I don't believe they had any right to be charging full price for my pitch it was hurrendous. There is building work from 8am daily and it is extremely disruptive; it's not background noise it's loud enough that you can't hear the TV unless you turn it right up. I would say it's very similar to having someone use a pneumatic drill right outside the caravan, it's that bad. The caravan actually shook too from the diggers etc.
The diggers all beep too all the time, a bit like lorrys do when reversing which is lovely to listen to 8am until 4pm.
Location is excellent but the building work looks recently started, so I imagine it'll carry on several months. Im meant to be returning to this site in march but I doubt I will as I'm not putting up with that noise again.
Having said that I would say my pitch was in the worst area as it was right on the boundary with the building area. The site is large so many people will have been unaffected. I just think it's cheeky charging the same full price for the people who are putting up with all the noise.
First class site
We stayed here over the Christmas period as we have done other years , and once again found the site wonderful .Facilities are always kept spotless and the warden team are always friendly and helpful .The site is perfectly located for visiting York , being just a short walk from the site into the centre of town .The exit gate at top of site leads to the delightful area of Clemthorpe , only a couple of minutes walk away. Here you can buy everything you could possibly want . There is a good bread shop , a couple of small supermarkets , fresh vegetable shop and several cafe's and takeaways. You could buy a house , get some new spectacles and have your hair done in just a few short steps . Overall a perfect site , not the quietest of sites , by being a stones throw from the centre of a large city , one can hardly expect peace and quiet , but this in no way detracts from the many plus points .Two words of caution , can people visiting please follow the directions given in hand book , and please do NOT arrive before 12 0 clock . The road to the site is rather narrow and if people are queuing on the approach road to get into the site , it only antagonizes people trying to get to Rowntree Park , which has same name as site , but is a pubic park .
Superb
We went for 6 nights over Christmas and enjoyed the best of weathers with blue skies most of the time.....we were lucky.
This was the third time had stayed here over Christmas, the last time 21 years before. The site has been slightly enlarged and we pitched on the 'new' section of hardstandings. The pitch was level and seemingly well drained as overnight rain one night didn't leave any nasty puddles for the morning.
The facilities were to the usual high CAMC standard as were the directions to the site. Wardens were more than helpful and always had time for a chat and to answer any queries we had. The Minster is approx 1 miles walk and everything else closer to the site so plenty to see and do even over the Christmas period.
There is s 'back gate' from the site that gives access to the local shops as there was no provisions on site. Rowntree Park is close by and that generates walkers, dog walkers and joggers from the town and traffic past the site is very light. There is a construction site adjacent to the site and this has the potential of noise generation but fortunately for us the site was closed for the entire period that we were there and so the site needs to be contacted regarding this if it could be a potential problem for any visitors.
Overall an ideal site for visiting York.
Christmas stay
A wonderful and warm welcome from all four wardens. Nothing is too much trouble. They seem genuinely interested in people on site. They provided a lovely Christmas Eve buffet and looked after all the guests who attended.
Lovely site in an unbeatable location
This was our second visit here at Christmas and cant fault it. Great location , lovely site with exceptionally well kept facilities and nice wardens!. Regarding arriving before 12, the local council give the site a hard time if people park up along the approach road as this is quite narrow and there are plenty of places to park up outside of York and wait.

Christmas Week in York
Stayed at this fantastic location for Christmas 2017. Site Facilities Spotless at all times. Warden full of festive cheer. Several units took part in a Xmas Lights competition, which was a welcome sight on return to the site at night.
The Shambles in York are delightful, especially at Xmas.
A nice flat walk, straight into the heart of the City along the river.
A visit to The House of The Trembling Madness is a must.
