Sandringham - A must visit place

Amongst other members we have spoken to the Sandringham site seems to have a bit of a “must visit” reputation. Having spent a few days here, we now know why. Set within the royal estate it’s in a peaceful and relaxing location. The staff are all top drawer, very helpful and welcoming, and the site and facilities were spotless. There are lots of walks from the site around the estate that take you to places where all you can hear is birdsong and the breeze in the treetops. There are also some good cycle routes, but off-road cycling on footpaths around the Royal estate is not permitted. That said we found the estate roads were fine and not too busy. We followed the national cycle route 1 (70% of the route is off road but tarmac) from the site down to into Kings Lynn, with an enjoyable stop at the tearoom at Castle Rising. To the east and north are also some quiet lanes that loop out to Anmer, Shernbourne, Ingoldisthorpe and back via Dersingham. For us a highlight was riding down to the village of Wolferton just to the west. (Using a quick zig-zag on the estate roads you can avoid the busy A149 to get there). This is where the now redundant but beautifully preserved Royal station is situated, and which together with the entire village still seems exist at the beginning of the last century. It’s also the home of the Royal Horse Stud (sadly no visitors though). On the final day we wandered along to Sandringham and were not disappointed. Although the house was closed the gardens were open and both stunning and tranquil, even on a grey rainy morning in May. We will return to this site because it’s a great location and there is a great deal see and do.
