Bonfire Weekend Safe Haven and Forest Ranger Rescue

We stayed at Stamford site for the first time over bonfire weekend hoping its peaceful location would mean our firework-phobic dog might escape her certain terror, and it worked a treat. We heard hardly any big bangs over three nights, but also discovered this beautiful tranquil site adjacent to Fineshade Woods with wonderful varied walking routes through Forestry Commission land. No need to venture to New England with brilliant autumn colour like this in the U.K., and red kites overhead. Sadly, I fell over the rather ungrateful dog whilst walking and sprained my ankle but a panic phone call to the very calm and helpful site warden saved me when she contacted the Forest Ranger at the nearby Visitor Centre who came out in his jeep to rescue me. So many thanks to Lynne, a terrific warden who even provided a bag of frozen veg to help my ankle. We'll return to this site when it reopens in the Spring and definitely for bonfire night next year.
