Good for families

a very good base, and great bread nearby!!

Visited May 2016. Approach is via a narrow and poorly surfaced potholed road, with frequent passing places, shared by the forest visitor centre. However, red kites circle as you enter the site, a well sheltered, well kept site with a choice of grass or hard standings in a standard campsite ‘horseshoe’ layout. Some background road noise most of the time here.No facility block, but lovely wardens, and a well stocked basic little shop, lacking only in daily papers. An information hut is here, but a lot of information was found to be well (years) out of date. Trees surround the site, and birds aplenty- bring your nut feeders!. There is good access to the forestry trails, cafe and bike hire centre. Quite a good place to cycle from, a small and lovely road leads off from the entrance road, out to Rutland water and a lot of good rolling hills. The woodland packed gravel roads are fairly uninteresting, but would provide a great place to safely teach children to cycle. There are more interesting off road/woodland routes also here. The main A43 however is a fast and busy lorry route. Nearby are Barnsdale, Burley House, Rockingham Castle, Deene Park and others. Lovers of REAL bread should visit the proper old fashioned bakery in Kings Cliffe (2 miles ish. via the cycle\walk route in the woods, bakery opposite post office, open am. only). All in all a good base to explore a very interesting area, with good cycling possibilities.
