A Well Placed Site

Stayed overnight at this site enroute to the ferry and again on our return from France, booking a ferry pitch (available outside office hours) due to our late arrival, then moved onto a standard pitch in the morning. This is a great site if traveling to and from Portsmouth ferry or just to visit Portsmouth and it's attractions for which the 'park and ride' bus service from just off J1 M271 provide a convenient way to the city. The site is situated within woodland and well clear of the road so traffic noise isn't a problem at all. There's a good choice of grass or hard standing pitches across the site giving an open feel to the site and children will enjoy to large open play area. The facilities are in a number of blocks across the site so you're never too far away from one and as you would expect they're spotless. Staff are both very friendly and helpful and are always working to keep the site pristine. This is certainly a site we will stay at when using the ferry but also as a base to explore the surrounding area.

SURELY THE ELECTRIC POST's ARE RCD PROTECTED, SO IT CANNOT BE A SAFETY MATTER, THEY MUST BE WORRIED YOU WILL BE USING TO MUCH ELECTRIC !!!!!!!!

This is a great site for dog walking

We like this site as it is very well laid out. Good spacing, not too many long lines of pitches and plenty of trees and bushes separating areas. It has a big dog walking field on site and it is adjacent to Hundred Acre Woods so it is great for walking the dog. NIce walk through woods to Wickham. We found the wardens helpful. Yes we were "told off" for arriving before 1.00pm, but we smiled and joked about it, apologised and got in. Maybe it would be a problem on a bank holiday weekend when it is busy and wardens are overworked but a smile goes a long way and we got in OK. This is a very nice site. There is a big kids play area (not that we used it) and sufficiernt loos and water points. We will be back, it will take more than a warden on a bad day to spoil this site :-)

Used to be good..........................

Living only 30 minutes drive away we have used Rookesbury regularly since we began caravanning in 2002. However our May late bank holiday weekend may have been our last. As others have said in previous reviews we too arrived at 12.00 on the Saturday, there were already 4 vans at the barriers only to be told arrival time was now 13.00, sorry I missed this but not very well highlighted on the booking confirmation. Having been disciplined by the strict warden we were told to sit in the car as the van owners in front had been ordered to walk the site to choose pitches, presumably this was their punishment for arriving at 12.00. More outfits are now arriving and blocking the gates, 3 outfit owners return and move onto site, one in front of us is still missing, presumably have gone to confession to repent of their sins. Outfits arriving after us can now pass us and access site. Eventually we can get past the lost owners and get onto site but now we don't know which pitches have been chosen by the walkers and which are still available!!!! We find a pitch and set up, however lightly damp tent field means toilet block is always filthy, by 8pm no toilet roll, no hand soap, slippery grass stained/muddy floor. Site has slipped its halo, we may try again next year once I've checked the warden/assistant warden list to see who's there for the year.

A great place

We had arrived in Portsmouth on a delayed afternoon ferry from Spain on a Friday afternoon and were so grateful we had booked this site instead of facing a motorway drive. Just 15 minutes from the docks and we were there. This is a large spacious site, with great facilities. Wardens and staff were helpful and polite. What I must mention is that after a long journey we were pleased to see the mobile fish and chip van. What a great team they were, 'Browns?' We had the best fish and chips we have had in months, award winning I would say. It's a great place if coming from the docks and I'm sure offers so much more if staying longer. We will certainly use every time when visiting Portsmouth.

Another gorgeous stay

I have to disagree with some of the recent negative reviews regarding this site and the current wardens. Over the last few years we have stayed at Rookesbury when returning to Hampshire to visit friends and family, most recently last week. We LOVE this site. One of the best dog walking fields we have had on a site, always experienced friendly wardens, a beautiful location, and great neighbours. I have only experienced considerate dog owners and usually any noise is from children having fun or over zealous wildlife! There is so much to do in and around the local area. We will be back again and again :)

Great Site in Stunning Location

Love this site as it's only a 25 minute drive and you are out in the middle of the country. Stayed over the weekend of 2 June. Weather was good and the grandchildren came and camped in the camping field. As usual, a nice clean site and a very enjoyable stay. Only one niggle. We turned up at 1200 (as did others) to find that the earliest arrival time had changed to 1300. OK, familiarity breeds contempt and we are used to all sites having a 1200 entry, and as the time is shown on the web page in small grey type, I didn't notice it. (With the interweb who reads the book??) This resulted in a 45 minute wait at the barrier in quite hot temperatures. I believe the club should have put a flag on the webpage to inform members of the change, and at least put it on the marketing emails we receive.

Could be a great overnight stop for the ferry

This is a spacious, beautiful site with excellent very clean facilities. We have used the site many times, both before and after using the Portsmouth ferry, as well as for a few days to explore the area. We used it this time before catching an afternoon ferry. That is fine. If you are catching an early morning ferry and have managed to book one of the 7 ferry pitches that is also fine. If there were no ferry pitches available when you booked and you booked an ordinary pitch, not so fine. They say they won't lift the barrier for you to leave and chances are you'd miss the ferry. I know this because last year we did just that. We were told we could have slept at the port - there were lots of empty pitches!! In the end they agreed to lift the barrier earlier. The booking page does not make this clear so I fear there will be many people caught out by this. Beware! And don't think it makes any difference that you booked your whole holiday through he club - ferry, sites and insurance.

Pleasent stay ruined by others

How easily a pleasant stay can easily be ruined by inconsiderate actions by others. Returning from a day out, we discovered the pitch next to us had been occupied, normally this would not be an issue. The owner decided to turn the van around so we parked door to door also with their dogs on long leads as we were leaving the next morning we put up with it.

Love the site shame about the one warden

Have stayed on this site quite a few times over the years and loved every visit however we stayed here from the 19th may for five nights on arrival we were greeted brilliantly chose our pitch and ordered the papers for the Saturday all lovely, Saturday went to get the papers took the money with me but unfortunately did not have enough on me so said I would return with the rest later where I was astounded to be told in a very rude and loud manor (make sure you do as well) I was absolutely seething but held myself from saying anything as I believe I would have been asked to leave the site, I fully understand that at times everyone has a day but that is no excuse to be rude to a customer we has visited numerous club sites in the ten years we have been members and this is the first time we have had problem, Our week was totally ruined by a very rude women. Oh and I went straight back and paid the rest of the money I owed but nether even got a thank you and she nether even looked at me or up
