Another fine week here!

We have been visiting this site regulary from north yorkshire.we love it, peaceful , scenic , clean and helpful friendly wardens.our dog loves it too, both for the official dog walking area ánd the surrounding forest walks. Yes phone signal weak and wifi not good, but a small price to pay for such an otherwise excellent site, will be back next year , steve n sal

Good site but...........

Nice site. Quite big, impersonal & expensive. Facilities good and if Members stick to arrival times the access road is adequate. Our phone signal was poor on the site together with 3G/4G coverage. We therefore had to use Club wifi. It's not expensive but extremely difficult and complicated to use especially if you want to use it on more than one device. Signing out is a nightmare. It is time the Club sorted this out once and for all. Most campsites have free wifi now and if the Club feels that it has to charge it needs to sort out the coverage and ease of use. Inconsistency of coverage, even on the same site, is irritating to say the least.

A great site but some shortcomings

The site is ideally located for Portsmouth and the surrounding areas. It is large and has a variety of pitches. For those with small dogs, the dog walk is beautifully maintained and is a pleasure to use. Those with larger or more energetic dogs can benefit from the woods accessed behind the toilet block. Walking from the site via the woods and the disused railway line to Wickham takes only 3/4 hour and is worth doing. Unfortunately, the site is in need of some modernisation in line with many club sites in that there are too many grass pitches which become waterlogged after any rainfall. In addition the trees need to be cut back to obviate the annoying drips onto the van after rain. The internet is also very fragile and can be hit or miss. Overall, a good peaceful site which will hopefully be modernised with more hardstandings and enhanced internet connectivity.

Lovely!

We have just joined the Caravan & Motorhome Club having been caravanning off and on since 1994, and so Rookesbury Park was our first experience of a Club site. Wow...we couldn't fault it! We have been used to the bigger sites with entertainment and swimming pools, etc and since 3 out of 4 of our kids don't come with us anymore our needs have changed. I wish we'd joined before. The site is spacious, spotlessly clean, quiet and very well kept. The dog walking area is great and it was nice to see children running around and cycling freely without anyone getting on at them. The toilets/showers were excellent and spotlessly clean as were the drinking and grey water facilities. This site is very local to us so it's somewhere we will use as a hideaway as often as we can from now on and are looking forward to visiting other Club sites too. I wish we'd experienced this years ago...if the other Club sites are like this then I'm sure we'll have a great time.

Lovely bank holiday weekend

We have just enjoyed a lovely weekend at this site and plan to return. We found the site well kept and the facilities clean. Friendly staff that never stopped working. Site was well placed to visit the local area. Having two dogs with us we found the dog walk to be large and fenced in, which is perfect to exercise our Newfies. We would highly recommend the fish and chip van that visits on a Friday evening, the best quality we have ever had from a mobile van. We did not experience any negative aspects that some members have reported. Staff were always polite, site was silent by 11pm, toilets always had paper and were kept reasonably clean all day. We do agree that due to the site layout some areas do feel busy and crowded, but the atmosphere remained nice and calm. The only negative aesthetic issue is the seemingly abundant use of commercial sign written tow cars (I.e. panel vans) which made some areas look like a travellers site but this is us being really pedantic and did not have any impact on our enjoyment.

Last minute weekend break

We arrived at this site on a Friday afternoon and it was almost full so took a little time to find a pitch, however we managed to find a large level grass pitch away from the site road which was a good move as lots of vehicles, scooters and bikes were constantly going around site. Well kept and clean the site was less ordered than some sites due to its layout and grasss pitches are large, giving a more relaxed feel, which we enjoyed. The hardstandings did look close together and might be a better bet in poor weather. Although busy, the site was not noisy, it is in the middle of woods and has lots of walking and cycling available, but as we were time limited we made easy and quick trips by car into Southsea, Portsmouth and Gosport. There is so much to do we will have to go back again soon. Less than an hour away from home we won't overlook this site again. Wardens were polite and helpful.

Perfect!

We stayed here for a weekend and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We stayed on a grass pitch which was level and large. The staff were all friendly and helpful. Toilet/shower block was lovely, clean, plenty of hot water and excellent water pressure in the showers and more than enough toilets, showers and sinks in private cubicles. Great dog walking field and children's play area. It's a wonderful 30 mins walk through the woods to the pretty village of Wickham which has plenty of shops, a couple of pubs and cafes. Can't wait to return!

An almost great stay

Another stay at another club site with a massively noticeable improvement to the Caravan Club. Place was prestine, orderly and relaxed...until the wardens 'vanish' at the end of their shift. Nobody around when a few selfish folk have a few too many and cause the disturbances i see on almost all sites i've been to recently. Most people seem either oblivious or seemingly very tolerant and am sure most would brush it off hoping for calm within 30 mins or so of the noise curfew. What is deemed a curfew and what constitutes an acceptable level of noise? I'd say enough to wake/ keep your neighbour awake at an acceptable hour. 10-11pm? However there is and are always one group, as there has been on two consecutive nights at Rookesbury. Drink drink drink but where are the wardens? I went looking at 11pm simply to notify them as any later, might seem unsociable! It doesn't seem as tho too much importance is put on managing the site after the hours of darkness. I've heard...or would expect at least one 'patrol' but have never myself witnessed anyone doing any checks and we're all left in charge for ourselves being 'trusted'. Wardens were seemingkly asleep by 11pm. Their dog told to be quiet when i tried to attract some attention. For the price of a pitch these days i'd expect more daylight service than daylight robbery. What does it cost to guarantee a peaceful nights rest. We're all just a few metres apart so why can't everyone consider eachother than just the majority of us?

Comment from the Club:

Many thanks for your review. We just wanted to clarify that the wardens on site are off duty from 8pm. They start work early in the morning and as such the site staff were asleep by 11pm. We have a duty of care to staff and need to ensure they do have adequate time off between their working hours. They work incredibly hard to ensure the site is well looked after and they are sorry to learn you had a disturbed evening due to the noise from other members.

Excellent Weather helps anywhere

We have stayed in the area before but never here. Lovely site, well laid out but at no time did it seem crowded even though it was almost FULL. We were on pitch 12 which proved to be one of the best considering the hot and very sunny weather we had in early July (plenty of shade). Almost aspects of the site are very good, though I do agree with some previous reviews regarding an abundance of dogs, some owners with 4. Plenty to do from the site and fairly close by, especially walking though cycling required going up a very steep hill to leave the site. Cycling in the nearby forest is also very hilly. We felt that to get the most from the area you needed to go to a local Tourist Information Office as the info on site was fairly limited. Overall we had an excellent 14 nights here but the brilliant weather helped. Would we return - I don't think so, but then we hardly ever return to a site for our main holiday.

Peaceful havem

We very nearly cancelled this site, having read some of the negative reports BUT very glad that we didn't! Lovely peaceful location in the middle of the woods with lots of lovely walks. Unfortunately it was slightly spoilt by a a few families camping nearby to each other who seemed oblivious to other campers by leaving bikes and ramps, circles of chairs in the middle of the field which had I been camped close by would've found it intimidating, as I know an older couple did! but I think the wardens were onto them and had a friendly word with them. That said, it in no way spoilt our stay there. All the negative comments about the wardens seemed unfounded as we certainly had a warm and friendly greeting. I totally understand why it is a 1 o'clock check in, as the approach road is single track and winding. We would certainly return there.
