Wonderful site, great team of hard working wardens

Just finished our final visit of the season & despite the awful problems caused by COVID 19 that we have all suffered we have thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We prefer to caravan fairly close to home & have managed 35 nights over several visits during this short season. Our dog loves the dog field & “pit stops” for urgent visits. Nothing could be improved unless we could get all campers to obey the rules such as clear up after your dog, 5 mph on site etc etc etc. This years warden team have been excellent, extremely helpful & friendly. We changed from a motorhome to a caravan & as we we hadn’t had a caravan for well over 30 years we were very naive, we wouldn’t have managed without the help & information of the wardens especially Paul

Dogs and dog poo

So we have stayed at this site many many times, the staff have always been excellent and the facilities have always been top notch, great food with decent prices on a Friday from the takeaway , same again Saturday but a little dearer, BUT, the one thing that really bothers me and has always bothered me is people taking their dogs into the children’s play area, it is clearly signposted that you are not to do this, but there are always the idiots that think they are exempt, on this particular weekend someone (presumably a child) had managed to tread in dogs poo and then plaster it all over the children’s climbing apparatus, and the first we knew of this was our child having it all over his hands, clothes, and then his balance bike grips, NOT IMPRESSED, and then low and behold, while waiting for our takeaway food on Saturday night, a group of people walk up, one woman has 2 huge st Bernard’s and some sort of blood hound or sausage dog and precedes to walk through the waiting people, straight through the opening into the children’s play area, where the dogs proceed to start crapping on the grass, UNBELIEVABLE, she picked up the ones that we saw but you only have to miss a bit and it’s trodden in then trodden all over the kids stuff, who knows what happened when she went further into the play area, I was fuming but the wife didn’t want a scene so she just talked to the staff who were also less than impressed, so if you do take your dogs ( we have 3 of our own) DONT TAKE THEM INTO THE CHILDRENS PLAY AREA

Peaceful & beautifully kept, great for dogs

What a fantastic site, so peaceful and well kept, layout is great and a very rural feel while being close to many places to visit. We had our two Goldies with us and they loved the dog walking field which is a top class facility (pity some owners don't pick up after their dogs). Great places locally and Wickham is lovely with great walks from the door. Definitely be back

A lovely site close to Wickham with nice walks through the woods and along the disused railway line.

We stayed on this site for the second time this year, to visit relatives in Wickham. The staff were very helpful and the site is clean and tidy. We'll stay there again shortly.

Great stay

This is a really lovely peaceful site situated right on the edge of the Forest of Bere and our hardstanding pitch had plenty of space and a decent degree of privacy. The site is great for the dogs with a gate straight into the forest just behind one of the toilet blocks accessed with a code, and a doggy shower for your return too. The dog walk on site is a large secure field and there are even smaller pitstops throughout the site convenient for doggy nightime duties. Staff on site are cheery and friendly too. We spent our days away from the crowds due to covid, just walking in the South Downs and by the sea, and even had 2 trips to the New Forest just 40 mins away. All in all a great site we wouldn’t hesitate to return to.

Another great stay

Arrived on 19th September for 2nd week-long stay in 2 years. Beautiful peaceful site even on the couple of very wet days that I experienced. Staff were very friendly and welcoming and very helpful. The site was surprisingly busy but it never feels crowded and despite the Covid restrictions there was no problem using the facilities - once there was a queue for the toilets but I walked to the other block which was empty. Facilities are clean and pleasant to use. The site is well placed for visiting Portsmouth for shops, eating out or historic sites - I stay here when I am visiting family who live in the city so it is very convenient. Also a good base for touring the area - the New Forest is close and we had a great day out in Salisbury. Or simply relax on site with walks in the forest and watch the wildlife - I had a toad living in the brambles behind my pitch. Also fabulous dark skies if you want to do a spot of star-gazing - it would be worth bringing a telescope. I will be back next year. I just wish they were open at Christmas / New Year - please?

Once a favourite...BUT!

Returned for a weeks stay after five years and have been many times before - the site has a great location for walking to Wickham, walking in the forest next door, visiting Portsmouth to name but a few things - not forgetting the excellent fish & chips on Friday night from visiting mobile chippy. The wardens are doing an excellent job in this current climate and are very friendly and helpful. So where is the problem ?... Tents. On arriving at lunchtime on a lovely Friday took dog onto what was an excellent field, it has now been downsized to accommodate tents.. Apparently there are also electric pitches available as well (these were caravan pitches). The "campers" that arrived in two tents were noisy, left litter everywhere in the field, the children ran riot throughout the site, leaving the toilets in a disgusting state, drinking from the freshwater taps used by caravaners and at one point when exercising the dog noticed one of the children going to the toilet in the bushes in the camping field - apparently not the first time. Thank goodness that party left Sunday lunchtime but it made for a very unpleasant atmosphere whilst they were there. Many other caravaners we spoke to are unhappy at the fact there are now allowing tents, whilst we understand not all campers are like that - in fact felt sorry for the other campers in the field ( we used to camp ourselves) it puts extra strain on the wardens and the facilities. So a lovely site spoilt by allowing tents - there are plenty of Affiliated sites in the club that already offer camping, there are also commercial sites were families could meet or even the "other" club with camping in the name! - please don't spoil ours. Will we return? probably not unless we go in the rain - there won't be tents then!!

Good site, excellent wardens, felt safe

This was our third visit in 6 years. Excellent site plus onsite staff were very helpful and offered sound advice. We walked into wickham using site shop guide and enjoyed good meals at the Square Cow and cream teas at Lilies,s both in the square. Chesapeake mill is worth a visit and has a good cafe. Of note is the Roebuck Arms is a relatively short walk through the woods and is under new management - we enjoyed their lunchtime meal deals. Overall a very good holiday with lots to see in the area, recommended is the National Museum of the Royal Navy in Gosport and Portsmouth plus Nelson Fort, but note some parts were shut due to covid and advance booking required. Also worth a visit is Hilton Ampner National Trust gardens and the Watercress Line only a few miles further on from Hilton at New Arelsford.

Relaxing stay at lovely Rookesbury Park

Recently returned from a 4 night stay and we just love this site ! . The staff are so friendly and welcoming the facilities are kept immaculately clean & tidy. We enjoy all the walks through the woods and the easy access to the Meon Valley trail. Wickham is a pretty village with some nice tearooms and shops, a pleasant a three mile walk . Our second stay here since lockdown and find all the procedures put in place for social distancing etc...work very well and made us feel safe during our stay. Look forward to returning again to Rookesbury in the future :-)
