Good site but don't book a grass pitch.

The positives - which is most everything - great location, good facilities, friendly staff etc Bad points - it was packed (In October!) and the site felt very crowded. Sadly we were forced to book a grass pitch - non electric which was a new temporary pitch squeezed in between a very busy set of hard standing pitches - it did actually feel very crowded indeed. We were unusure about even driving onto the pitch to be honest as it was already cut up from the last visitor. We had no choice though as I asked if there was anything else available and the answer was no. We drove on hoping to be able to get off the next day. The pitch was not just wet, but boggy - so much so that you couldn't sit outside the van or really stand or even have the dog lying on the ground. Anyhow the walk into town is short so we retired to the pub. In the night as expected the van sank and we had trouble extricating ourselves - so the pitch was then in a worse state. I just HOPE it was not sold again that night as really (AND FOR THE PRICE) it was not fit for purpose. Everything else was good though apart from the crowded feeling of the area where we were - a real shame. If I had known I would have found somewhere else. I'd like to come back and park on a hardstanding sometime, but I really do not rate the grass pitches and I hope this is looked into and improved for next year.

First Campsite as Motorhome owners in late August

This was our very first campsite with our own motorhome. It was a perfect choice; easy to get to, friendly with an informative greeting, well spaced out pitches, which we had a choice of hardstandings to choose from. We choose a pitch half way from the road by trees and I do not remember undue road noise. Nice short walk into town and being August there was an on-site Pizza takeaway service which we enjoyed, I don't know if this is normal occurrence through-out the year. We intend to return and this time make the short walk to the nearby Arboretum.

Made to sleep in the car park

We didn't arrive until just after 8.30pm. We had only just bought our motorhome and joined the Caravan Club the day before, so didn't know the process or what to expect. We never received any email or instructions about what to do on arrival and couldn't contact the site, as we could not find a phone number or email for them. We were then told by a member of staff who came out to us that we would have to sleep in the car park as we were a late arrival. We were positioned next to the bins and under a spotlight which was on all night so we were unable to sleep. We were next to a fence and the cars in the car park and the busy main road. He said to us on departing that he could not contact us, as he doesn't do emails. He then told us to come to the office at 9am the next day and he would see if he had availability for the following night. Why on earth would anyone pay for another night after being made to sleep in the car park which cost £41 when the council car park 5 minutes away is free and would have been more peaceful? We left at 7am as we were unable to use any of the facilities like the showers, toilets and waste disposal that we had paid for and had very little sleep. This was our anniversary present to ourselves and we couldn't have had a more disappointing or unnecessarily upsetting night. We will never return.

Comment from the Club:

Thank you for your review. We are sorry to learn you were unhappy with the service received from our Site Staff. Our Site Staff are the face of the Club and providing excellent customer service is something that we always strive for. Unfortunately on this occasion you arrived after our site office had closed for the night. When our members book a Club Campsite, we ask everyone to read the Important Information section and then tick to confirm they agree (or if members book via a Club campsite or Call Centre, this will be read out to them:

Important information
Please observe the earliest arrival time of 13.00

Ahead of your arrival on site, please check camc.com/beforeyoutravel where you will find key information about roadworks or diversions and any site works that may be underway.

We ask you to check in by 8pm. If on the day of travel you think you may arrive after 8pm due to delays en route, please call the site staff who will advise if we have space for you in the late night arrivals area. Late night arrivals areas should only be used when agreed in advance with site staff.

This information is also printed on your booking confirmation document which is emailed to members very soon after confirming a booking.

Unfortunately as you arrived after 8.30pm, the site office will have been shut and the site team would have been on their rest-period/down-time and only available in an urgent critical emergency.

We hope this clears up any confusion and will be useful for future visits.

Road noise on some pitches

Nowhere on the website or any reviews say anything about road noise on some pitches, nor did the wardens. Thankfully we only stayed one night but that one night was far from peaceful and quiet as the website had led me to believe. The main road runs alongside several of the pitches and the traffic bombing past with great regularity continued until around 1 am and started up again at around 4am, three hours sleep just isn’t enough for me these days. I am aware that external road noise is outside of the wardens remit and also that of the Club, but to give the site a 5/5 for peace and quiet is very misleading! I was after and under the impression the site would be quiet during the usual quiet times over night as there was no mention of the road noise and wanting a peaceful stopover was the reason I’d booked, if I’d known there were pitches close to a main road I’d have thought again and not booked this site. The site itself is lovely the wardens helpful, friendly and welcoming, the walk to town is fairly short and can be either footpath along the road or across the fields. Tuesday is market day so most shops are closed on a Monday which was a shame but not a major problem. It’s a shame that I felt the site was in a way misleading in its advertising and won’t be returning as it is just too noisy for me

Well managed site and great location in the Cotswolds

Very pleasant staff and a well maintained site which was always clean, tidy and appealing. Dog walk area very good. Town centre only 10mins walk. Frustrating that new turf was surrounding our pitch with notices saying "Don't walk on grass" We have dogs !! These pitches (only 3 of them) should have been ringfenced and taken out of commission obviously, and they were no where near capacity, so just bad management really.. Unfortunately I didn't realise until we had positioned the caravan. Otherwise good site generally.

Poor Grass Pitches

The site is in an excellent location, within walking distance to the village. Most of the site is kept tidy but unfortunately the grass pitches are not. They are muddy, overgrown and not welcoming. Would expect better from The Club, even taking into account the area in which the site is located. Would not discount visiting again but would select hard standing next time.

Recent stay 3 - 6 August 23.

We have stayed at this site several times due to the location, excellent position for Cotswolds and walking distance to the town. Typical standards of C&MC apply so you know what to expect in general. However on this recent stay we were a little disappointed due to the pitch. These vary throughout the site and it is a work in progress as many pitches had been re surfaced, and it seemed upgraded to service pitches, albeit more expensive. The std pitch with awning and hookup was (on this occasion) one of the non refurbed pitches which was water logged. Technically it was hard standing with a narrow strip of grass, but this couldn't be utilised as we had to park the car on it to keep the road clear. The gravel simply blended into the soil and little or no drainage was apparent. After a day of persistent rain the awning couldn't really be used so we moved into the van. The refurbished std pitches were no issue (but none available on arrival). So, overall a disappointing stay but this was due to circumstance and indeed this is simply a factual reflection - not a complaint. With hindsight I would have booked a service pitch which were all level, surfaced and we would have had a completely different experience.

Fantastic first visit

We stayed here on our 3 week trip for four nights, the welcome was really friendly from the warden's and gave us lots of info. We had booked a serviced pitch and chose 160 (perfect) huge and close to all facilities. The site also has a number of food vans that come to site on different days. The village has all you need pubs, eateries and independent shops. A short walk and your in the village where you can also get buses and trains to get further a field. If you like a cheeky afternoon pint we would recommend the the bear pub. Overall a great stay and would return in the future. 😁
