A lovely place to be
It occurred to me how different sites might look in winter as compared to summer. Littlehampton is a really lovely site and I Imagine a hive of activity in the summer months when, who knows, it might seem very different. My visit took place during a few crisp, clear-blue-sky days in December when the site was inevitably quiet. I had a service pitch which was spacious and well kept. On my first choice the tap was frozen so I moved to the adjacent pitch where the tap was running freely. At these times I suppose one must expect these kind of difficulties. The site is big, very well maintained and has an open aspect which I prefer. In one corner there is a park home site. I pitched right on the border of this but there was no noise or other inconvenience from it. I am sure that for those in park homes, it is likely to be us annoying them more than the other way around. Indeed, on the Sunday of my visit, I was awoken at 6:30am by my neighbour packing up and doing so in seemingly as noisy a way as they could. In just over an hour until their departure at just after 7:30 they must have banged shut caravan and car doors 30 times. No more sleep for me on the day of rest. On the odd occasion when I have had reason to leave very early, I have crept around like a cat and made sure I kept door banging to an absolute minimum (leaving my van door open throughout, for example). You have to put up with this now and again (they might have had a ferry to catch or some emergency for all I knew), but if I was in the adjacent park home – as near to our pitches as we were to each other – I would not have felt very happy. Anyway back to this site which, in short, I liked very much. I have visited the triad of Sussex coast sites in Brighton, Worthing and Littlehampton this year and they are all lovely. Worthing is definitely my favourite, but Littlehampton comes a close second. For those reliant on public transport the excellent 700 coastliner service goes past the site every 30 minutes to Arundel one way and then Littlehampton, Worthing and Brighton the other and with changes in Littlehampton to Chichester or Portsmouth in the easterly direction. Alternatively, it took me 25 minutes to walk to the railway station in Littlehampton with trains to Brighton or London and many other places. The road adjacent to the site does give a little noise but I would not describe this as serious and, for me, a city boy, a comforter rather than an irritant. There is a children’s play area – quiet at this time – in the middle of the large open section of the site at the northern end. Those who find the noise of children playing an annoyance would need to avoid this part of the site but there are a lot of alternatives. Finally, the loo block was excellent, TV great, (I rely on 4G for the internet so cannot comment on the Wifi) and the wardens were lovely, friendly and very helpful. The only downside for me is that the town is distinctly grotty. Worthing is a much nicer place.
