Peaceful location, amenities clean, friendly staff will be visiting again soon. worth a visit and walk over the aquaduct
Good location and lots of interesting places nearby.
The site is nicely located between the Castle, the Canal and the town of Chirk. The castle is great, the canal has lots of interesting tunnels and aqueducts (built by Thomas Telford) and the town is small but has a couple of pubs and a few shops.
The site has all the normal high standards of the club. There are lots of rabbits and squirrels running around. We enjoyed our stay.
Better than we feared!
Before booking our stay, my wife was nearly put off this site by some of the negative comments in some of the reviews, especially over the noise from the nearby factory and the 'tired' nature of the facilities.
Well, I'm glad we booked. The site was tidy, quiet (I did hear the factory, yes, when I strained), the facilities were fine and it was well positioned for the places we wished to visit. Oh, and the staff are lovely!

Dog Walking Haven
Great place to stay if you have a dog. There is a very good dog-walk on site. It's in the woods so lots of smells to stimulate your dog. Plenty of wildlife on site making it even more interesting. Lots of really good walks in the local area. You can even walk from the site along the canal or to the castle. Really friendly people on site. It was full but didn't give the impression of being busy. Would stay again without hesitation.
Great site
Site is easy to find, but looked on Google Earth in advance.
We were let in early despite it being fairly full and were able to make a choice of pitch.
The site is very large with a couple of small wooded copse like areas.
The toilets are a bit dated and probably too few for the number of pitches, but this did not affect us.
The wardens were excellent and readily printed off directions for a walk to Llangollen. However, if you go out of the site, the same as the way in, you see the canal. Go to the tow path and keep walking. Once over the viaduct (brilliant) there is a spur off to the left over a footbridge. 9 miles later you are there. If you want to cycle then the towpath is excellent.
Also if you go up the road from the site you can visit Chirk castle. With care you can walk around the grounds.
Chirk is a rather small town and consequently there are few supermarkets, the closest is a rather expensive Spar.
If in the area we would go again, as we easily occupied 3 days with walking and cycling.
Children may find it tedious as the play area was rather inadequate, which made it lovely and quiet for the rest of us.
A Welsh Rarebit?
This site is well positioned for exploring the surrounding countryside being located adjacent to the Chirk Castle estate. The site is laid out within woodland with some pitches in shady tree areas while others occupy more open glades. The area seems to abound with wildlife with rabbits and squirrels frolicking about during daylight hours to the noisy owls at dusk and the dawn chorus from the treetops in early morning giving the place a ‘back to nature’ feel. Yes, if you listen very closely you can hear the low moans of the nearby factory but it doesn’t really detract from the natural feel of this site.
As for the facilities? Well, as others have suggested, they’re a little dated and in need of a facelift, the amenities provided in the single block although spotless seemed to be lacking in number and may prove somewhat problematic when the site is at capacity. It’s also worth noting that the hook-up points are {I believe) the old type, (plug in and twist), something I didn’t expect and got into a bit of a tizz over. Also despite TV reception being given as poor or fair, we were surprised that there wasn’t a central TV aerial point available as on other sites (we lost reception for one day during our stay). If I were coming to the site with children, I think I and my children might be somewhat disappointed by the description of ‘play area’. One addition that would be well appreciated by those new to the area would be a detailed map showing possible walks in the local area, perhaps mounted on the wall of the ‘Information Room’?
Despite the above comments, we had a really nice two night stay at the site, the wardens are warm and friendly and only too pleased to help or just stop and chat. We were lucky as the weather was quit good and would suggest that everyone should take the opportunity of a wander through the castle grounds up to the castle for a coffee break before returning admiring the views on your way back.
Spoilt by factory noise
Site feels a bit unattractive on arrival but in fact is pleasant and we left feeling good about it. Agree with other recent reviews that a little tidying and modernising is required but nothing too drastic. Lack of bins at service point near our pitch (12) was a bit inconvenient. This was attended too on our last day. The wind was coming in from direction of nearby wood chip factory for most of our stay and there was a constant droning noise which was a shame. It was very peaceful otherwise. So if you can time your visit when wind is from South, do so!! Great tea room and some nice little shops in Chirk and well placed for exploring this part of Wales, Shropshire and Cheshire.

Some TLC required
A pleasant and well located site which we have stayed at before. Compared to some CC sites it is starting to look tired and is in need of some TLC. Following heavy rain, ground conditions were poor so the hard standing was welcome. However, access to the nearest service point was difficult as although steps had been installed you had to walk across muddy grass to access them. Someone should have thought to put in a path.
Aromas of wood and chocolate
We spent a couple of nights on site as first time visitors to Wales, although we hadn't ventured far because we managed to walk back into England across the Chirk Aqueduct. A walk to Chirk Castle was disappointing because I like to photograph olde worlde castles that have seen battles and attacks and this one looks as if it has just been built, or rebuilt, with a few TV aerials added to the roof.
Chirk is a steady walk down a very narrow road which allows many lorries to regularly access the local industrial estate, where woodworking and manufacturing takes place and the chocolate factory. It may not be Cadbury's any more, but it smells good enough - and there can't be any calories in a few lungfuls of chocolate vapours. New wardens just moved to the site, really friendly and helpful - facilities are OK, if a bit tired, and kept tidy and clean. Pity we can't clean the showers effectively after use with a mop, and a greater pity that the squeegee or the floor is not straight, so this is ineffective. Oh how we dream of having a mop to dip in the wet shower base then we can wipe away the suds and the talc before we leave, or perhaps the shower water contains too many unsafe chemicals from the chocolate factory. Would like to return here, if only on our way further afield. Recommended..

A bit of TLC needed
Whilst we and the dog were impressed with the wildlife we were less so with the washrooms which are looking tired. There seems proportionally more washbasins than toilets or showers and they do need some work on them. Unlike other sites the wardens were less evident. Why were there no rubbish bins in part of the site? The position is excellent and it is not far into Chirk for stores.
