Hearty Hawes in a hurricane

Like earlier reviewers, we arrived in - and to downpours, floods, high winds, and an area power-cut for our first few hours on site. Perfect conditions to test the site and wardens! As can be seen from our 'star rating', both passed with flying colours. Yes, navigation to this site is massively impeded by the most confusing road layout in Hawes, coupled with a total absence of signs there. Signs to the site from the village are massively overdue (Caravan Club take note). Previous reviewers have commented on this, and we were not alone in making several abortive stabs. In fact one visitor we spoke to had made several trips into and from the town almost to give up and return home. And it is fair to say that the access road leading to the site is constricted - an issue that could be improved with investment by the club. But once on site, all is forgiven. Given the perils of the night, the wardens were magnificent - helpful and empathetic. As our four nights extended into five, and thousands of gallons of rain fell in continuous streams, the site remained totally passable and the pitches serviceable. From our pitch overlooking the Ure, we enjoyed tremendous views across North Yorkshire countryside - eventually to become a lake below us. Hawes is right on the doorstep, with an easy level walk to the village and its numerous inns and pubs. The Hawes Creamery at the head of the village is well worth a visit - even if just to shop for divine cheeses; and we can recommend the short stroll along a paved Pennine Way to Gayle, which you access from behind the church. Hawes is very much the gateway to the northern dales so proves a perfect place for quiet get-aways or family trips.
