Just returned from an Easter break at Englethwaite site and we can say it was wonderful.  The wardons went out of their way to provide info on local walks and even lent us a map of the area.  The club makes reference to a walk to Armathwaite from the site via the river.  Turn right  out of the site and  less than 15 mins it is signposted to the left. We did it but the descent from the road down to the river is extremely severe! so good boots are needed. There are two pubs in Armathwaite we tried the one over the river and it was very welcoming. We walked back via the road which although had occasional traffic was fine, the walk back was just over an hour. Shopping at Gretna Green outlet, Carlisle and Annan are well worth visiting and are an easy commute by car.
