Returned and Very Disappointed

We have a twin axle caravan and needed to phone for available pitches. We advised that pitch 16 was not suitable(slope and overhanging branches) and that we would need the longer central pitches. When we arrived the very helpful RELIEF MANAGER had saved a pitch which again unfortunately was not really suitable, but he advised that 16 really was the only other one. We had to utilise this pitch until the following day, when we were able to move our unit to the central area, where the pitch had been occupied by a motor home which could have easily been accommodated on other pitches, rather than taking up a pitch long enough for a twin axle caravan. Pitch 16 sloped severely backward (as do most of Dockray Meadow Pitches) and we found that the TV connection (needed for reception) DID NOT WORK. The following morning Keith the Relief Manager advised that this had been reported on the last time that he was relieving on the site!! Nothing obviously had been done. So we had now wasted a day and not had the facilities which were advertised to us.....no fault of Keith's, who was one of the most helpful people one would wish to meet. Last time we visited Dockray (several years ago) we were told that the sloping pitches were to be levelled out! Nothing seems to have been done to this lovely little peaceful site. We arrived not long after Keith relieved on the site and found that it was sadly very unwelcoming....the shop devoid of produce/no flowers whatsoever around the site, which is usual and was always the case at Dockray and the grass appeared not to have been cut for some good long time. On the Monday though, Keith was out and busy cutting the extremely long grass around the site. This is a lovely little site, but sadly has been allowed to become less than tidy and it would appear there is a sad lack of maintenance....there is no Wi-Fi although this must come into site to ensure that the site has internet access to take our payments and bookings!! There is internet across the road on the commercial site, so why not at Dockray. The club appear to be concentrating, from what I am told on the larger and more profitable??? sites. What a pity... a lovely site....spoiled by lack of care and maintenance.

Peaceful

A very tranquil site with good access to Whitehaven and the coast, as well as to the nearby lakes. The phone reception is very patchy and of course there are no facilities on site for showers, toilets etc. Its an ideal site for walkers and hikers wishing to explore the surrounding area.

This was our first visit to this site. We booked in Friday lunchtime and were greeted by Jayne one of the wardens. We were advised which would be the best pitches for us as we were a long unit and went off to pick and pitch. Jayne and her husband  (sorry I can't bring get his name to mind) seemed very pleasant and obviously cared about the site. The  site is within some very good walking areas with several from the site. Part way through our stay a temporary warden arrived as Jayne and her husband were off on holiday for a week. This review is mainly for them really as they were brilliant and had more contact with them due to unfortunate circumstances . On the Wednesday of our stay we were out walking at nearby Ennerdale Water where unfortunately I slipped and fell. I injured my hand quite badly and needed to go to A + E. Keith and Pat Tarn the temporary wardens were fabulous. They gave us information on where I needed to go to be treated. Also it was a very hot day so we couldn't leave our dog in the caravan so they quite happily took care of him for us while we went to hospital which was a load of our minds. I ended up having 5 stitches in my hand and needed a hand brace so unfortunately had to cut our stay short but would not hesitate to return. I would just like to reiterate our thanks to Keith and Pat they are truely a credit to the club and deserve a huge pat on the back. Sorry this is included in the review but I couldn't easily find somewhere on the Web to send formal thanks to them.

Back to nature

A truly peaceful place to relax away from the 'rat race' and in a well sheltered area with sunny or tree shaded pitches. Well layed out and nice spacing between units and very friendly and helpful wardens.

Perfect site.

I could not believe how peaceful this site was, you can watch the most amazing sunsets if you are on the right pitch, also views are superb. The spacings are generous and all pitches are hardstanding, when it rains heavily they drain quickly. The friendly Wardens are very hardworking keeping the site tidy grass mown, hedges cut. Excellent large enclosed dog area. Only 14 miles from Keswick for food shopping or Launderette, Cockermouth is a pretty place to visit. There is a useful drying room on site.

Fast from the madding crowd

After spending 2 nights at Park Coppice over the Bank Holiday weekend Dockray was a welcome haven of peace. The quite and relaxing site was bliss. We arrived late after I had managed to get the van stuck on steep and lose stone whilst exploring the coast line. Despite arriving 90 minutes after closing the warden was pleasant and helpful. There's no shower block but that's no great loss. Pitches were roomy and generally flat. We enjoyed a peaceful couple of nights. Hired a car from Enterprise so we could visit some of places we can't get the van to. Watendlath & Hardknott been 2 of them. CC site states free vehicle drop off & collection but Enterprise seemed not to know about this but they did pick us up to go to Workington to sign up. There's some great places to visit on the west. Wastwater, Ennerdale to name just 2 and the fells near the site offer some good walking. So if you want peace and quite and chance to explore the Cumbrian coast or Western Lakes, head for Dockray

Very peaceful setting

Location very easy to find and very friendly wardens welcomed us. We were given a choice of pitches with recommendations from the warden as to whether we preferred shade or full sun! The pitches are not flat but not an issue. From the very start of our week we noticed how quiet and peaceful the site was, especially as it was still in the school holidays, and the location meant we could discover the quieter side to the Lakes and were not disappointed with the stunning beauty of Ennerdale, Buttermere and Crummock Water .Walks also directly from the site. We will definitely be back!

peace and quiet

If you want peace and quiet, a babbling brook, lovely scenery, and great walks this is the place to come. The relief warden was very pleasant on our visit. There is a shop across the road in the other caravan site which sells papers and groceries etc. Some of the pitches are tight to reverse into and some are slightly sloping but they just test your ability.Places to visit--Keswick,Cockermouth, Whitehaven marina area and St Bees on a sunny day. There is plenty of walking in the area and Cogra Moss is well worth a visit.

Nice site

An enjoyable stay on a quiet and well situated site.  Welcomed by relief wardens who were delightful. Good walking and cycling from the site and decent pubs on the walks. Need good chocks as the site isn't overly level, but not a massive issue. I would certainly recommend it, just be careful on the surrounding roads, they're a bit tight.
