30 years on and still our favourite
I first came across the site whilst looking for an overnight stay in the 1980s. My wife (Fiancé, in those days!) and I really enjoyed our short stay and have been returning at least 3 times a year, for nearly 30 years.
The site has changed and expanded over the years, but the main reason why we like the site remains – its location.
Adjacent to Cirencester Park and a 15 minute walk from the delightful Cotswold town of Cirencester makes it an ideal base for enjoying the countryside and shopping in a large range of independent stores. Within a few miles drive are some of the prettiest Cotswolds villages.
The site is well positioned for Cycling – either some challenging off-road riding towards Stroud, or pleasant road riding around the plethora of country lanes. It is a pity, however, that no cycling is permitted in Cirencester Park.
Although Cirencester Park is adjacent, access is restricted to certain times. The original short cut to the park (and then the town) through the adjacent cricket ground was closed by the Estate a few years ago, but a new semi-official route developed across a neighbouring field. However on our most recent stay (November 2015), the track was too muddy to use.
The Cotswold soil is very heavy and grassy areas get frequently water-logged. Apart from the newest set of pitches, apparently known as “Millionaires Row”, most hardstanding pitches are too small to comfortably accommodate van, awning and car.
Wardens come and go, but most have been friendly and helpful. (The current Wardens included). However, Christmas a few years ago, the Wardens at that time couldn’t even muster a “Merry Christmas” on Dec 25th.
The approach to the site is via a private road to the rear of Deer Park School. Cars parked on the service road as one leaves the A419 can be a little tricky. (Certainly during School term time). The main private drive of about 400 meters, although frequently repaired, is often pot-holed with large puddles forming after the slightest amount of rain.
Families tend to camp on the grass pitches which surround the children’s well-equipped play area.
The dog walk field is large and great for even bigger dogs to run around. There is a sports field as well – but note the comment about the Cotswold soil and wet weather.
Although adjacent to Cirencester Park, the site is not particularly quiet. Traffic noise from the dual carriageway leading to Cirencester can be obtrusive. During recent years, Deer Park School has been expanding with what seems like never ending construction projects. Of course, such activities are loud, but I understand will be completed within a few months.
In life, priorities and interests constantly change, but Cirencester Park has retained its appeal; maybe because it has something to offer all generations of campers.
