Worth a visit

Have just stopped overnight before, but decided to stay for two nights and visit Cheltenham and pleased we did. Being on a race course makes for an interesting site. We have done the circular walk around the racecourse before, but this time decided to combine two of the local walks helpfully outlined on the noticeboard and we walked part way down the perimeter path and across the field into Prestbury village and had a beer at the Royal Oak. Had to stay outside because of the dogs but it was under cover. Returned via the main road route; the one down the footpath is a pleasanter - and quieter - route. On Tuesday we walked into Cheltenham, again following the instructions helpfully provided by the wardens. Very pleasant park with a little cafe at the southernmost end selling a decent coffee and bacon roll - water for the dogs too - and all in the sunshine fortunately. Visited the Holst Birthplace Museum which is well worth a visit and they provided a stool for one of us to sit on in the front garden while we took it in turns to go round. Lunch at Harry Cook's which is one of the few places (Tourist Info could only identify three and we sampled two) that will allow dogs inside and is very pleasant on Montpelier Walk opposite Montpelier Gardens - decent beer and bar snacks though not  cheap. Then the dogs and I sat on a window seat at the Boston Tea Party - and I had a tea - while my other half had a look round the Wilson - the museum and art gallery (free) and well worth a visit I am told.  Bus back from just up the road - £1 each for the dogs. Despite a number of small parks and some friendly dogs and owners, Cheltenham is not the most dog friendly place, but there are one or two places you can go inside with them and they can go on the bus, so if you are  a dog owner it is still possible to have a very pleasant day there.
