Useful stop off site, and Cheddar Gorge is walkable - but we found some issues too
Site not difficult to find as long as you follow the club’s directions, and have a look on Google Maps Streetview in advance. We’d never ever rely purely on a satnav, especially when towing. Entrance road is narrow over the whole length, with blind bend, so on no account ever arrive early. The first area of roadway, outside the football club entrance, and just off the main road, is very rough and desperately needs resurfacing.
The wardens are very friendly and helpful, and the facilities are very clean.
For us the worse aspect of the site was the playing of Radio 2 in the toilets/showers – we found this irritating. Thankfully it had not been extended to the washing up area (as some sites have done), where it would kill conversation dead and rob us of the wonderful exchange of advice and tips with other members that we’ve enjoyed on so many other sites. Although Radio 2 is popular with many, it is not universally so. Best to have nothing at all, like most sites, then no one is offended. I’ve never seen a site get a bad review due to lack of radio.
Many first-time visitors to the site are likely to want to walk into Cheddar and to the gorge. They may do this soon after arrival, perhaps seeking a meal or shopping after a long journey. The obvious route, along the main road is neither pleasant nor safe due to narrowness, heavy traffic including HGVs and lack of footway – as we discovered. There is a pleasant safe route, but the only advice on this is on the wall in the information room, and lost amongst all the other stuff. It is also quite sketchy, lacks a map and fails to emphasise the safety issues. It is vital that this is offered to all when first arriving on site, and also there should be a reminder on the gateway. We were told by one local that pedestrians have indeed been hit by vehicles on the main road.
We arrived Wednesday 22nd May and departed two days later, so cannot comment on potential noise from the football ground.
We found this a useful stop off on our return home from Cornwall, and it is ideally situated for Cheddar Gorge. It could be a good site if the safety, road surface and radio issues are addressed, but as it stands we cannot give it a strong recommendation.
