Charming Chatsworth

We arrived on a Monday deliberately, we could only get 5nights on booking in December 2016, but managed to extend one night, shifting pitch to a non awning one. Be warned the non awning pitches are awful. We arrived at 1315 and there was a queue, it did not take long to go down and move on. Later during our stay when we returned with car alone we had to again queue with arriving vans. The Wardens did later say not to try to arrive or depart the site in car alone between noon and 1430. But there are a few idiots who wont let a lone car past them, even though there are passing points. My wife and kids walked back to the van, thanks you lot. All pitches are good, well spaced, we took the one near the play ground, all are hard standing. There are pitches where a stone shed is behind, odd really as chess and table tennis available there. Not sure how you'd feel if others used that facility. The ones to avoid are the ones covered by trees, and worst the ones with roosting crows! We were lucky until we shifted pitch, pitch 72 was a right bird bomb aimers dream! Well stocked shop, pleasant wardens, one guy a bit OTT but rules is rules, we hand no issues but others did fall foul. Picky stuff really. Dogs on leads a must, pheasants, ducks and ducklings wander the site. Our Dog is also a good girl, but temptation is nonstop. No road noise, but plenty of bird noise. Dog walk is the only part where dogs can run free. Its fenced in but small dogs will get out. Magic gate into the park is a god send. Left into the village, right the park, We did the house, gardens, farmyard and playground £60 odd quid thanks, the farmyard tame, the adventure playground unsuitable for our 11yr old, he got board. Food and drink pricey. We soon found the gate buy the farmyard that takes you into the woods. Great walks, up the steps to the tower, or the dell. or the lake. Most well trodden. Can walk for miles. We did this freebie explore a number of times. The village has a small but great shop, local, quality stuff, the Wheatsheaf do us a 20pc discount on production of our members card. We went at 5pm, not busy, table service inside, great food, a pleasant place. Check out the sweat shop, and also other little shops. We went to Castleton to do the caves, Peak Caven, the walk up more impressive than the caves, a massive group we went with and we arrived early. The Speedwell Caven was I feel the better of the two, also do this one early and first, there are two boats of 21 people, the queue moves slowly, you are waiting outside. Great pass nearby:) The joint ticket was £55 odd. We rested at the three roofs cafe, small pleasant but pricey, it was nice though. We were lucky to get this site at all. Its very popular and very busy. The access road is very poor, the must be in front crowd make life hard for the normal folk, coming and going. A great stay, we wont be back, we have ticked this box and will move on. Dogs, and children, loads of both, no issues though :) A good site, you will enjoy it :)
