Chapel Lane Getaway

Needed a few days away from it all, so booked a 3 night stop over rather than the normal 2. Very clean site and friendly staff. Beckett's Farm shop and restaurant were great and we ended up bringing back more food than we originally took with us! First site I've been on where there were a couple of noisy dogs, but it wasn't an issue and not the sites fault. We will be using it again.

Would stay again

Booked this site as my partner had a hospital appointment in Birmingham and thought we'd have a few days away with our new rescue dog. Everything clean and tidy with good clear signage. Liked the little information shack too where you can borrow games and books and check out transport timetables, places of interest etc. Doggo loved the leafy walk and watching the squirrels. We were also guided to a lovely longer walk through the countryside too. Can see why it's popular all year round; there's plenty to do not a million miles away and Chapel Lane makes a very reasonable base indeed. Missing a site shop but most people come well stocked-up anyway I think.

Worst Site we've Been to

I will never book this site again which is a shame as it is very convenient for the NEC. There were kids playing ball in the middle of the site road when we got there and we were not impressed with this as the wardens did not do anything to stop this. Whilst we were there the grass was never cut in fact it had not been cut for some time. This hid a lot of dog mess and nearly each time I walked my dog around the site I came back with dirty shoes. The actual dog walk stank and there was dog mess everywhere. Even outside the gate there was mess even though the residents outside the gates had put up signs for people to pick it up this was ignored. On one occasion a dog was barking for over 2 hours! The wardens must have heard it as it is not a big site but did nothing about it. We did not have any telephone number to call and the main office did not answer. In the end a few people went to the owner to complain and all she did was throw a bowl of water over the dog. When we finally spoke to a warden he stated that he would have to speak to everybody concerned not just the dog owner!

Always a good place to stay

I have stayed at Chapel Lane a few times now over the past decade or so. I have noticed a decline in the condition of the site over that period and I cannot help thinking that it is in need of a little bit of TLC. Many of the pitches are looking rather careworn and the site has a generally unkempt appearance. Mind you, this stay was in autumn and one must make allowances; no site, especially if, as usual, it is surrounded by trees, looks especially tidy at that time – particularly on grey and damp days.

I must say that the general dishevelment of the place is not helped by the storage site next door. I have learned, from a bad experience at Bearsted, that whenever a site has storage, one must take care to avoid any road leading to or from it. Few pitches here are affected in that way. Another factor heightening the sense of disorder was some rather odd-looking encampments on a few pitches. Two of these, I was informed, were seasonal pitches. These appeared to be occupied by people in permanent residence. One pitch had two motorhomes and a storage trailer crammed in. The other a trailer home with an array of awnings. They were not travellers, but you could be mistaken for thinking otherwise.

I had a service pitch backing onto the Wythall Cemetry. These pitches are fine, but not very deep. The service pitches on the other side of the site are deeper. It was bad luck that there was some machinery operating in the cemetery, or possibly the large house next door, that continued unbated for the whole of one day and part of another. However, such things are not within anyone’s control.

Despite the negatives, I always seem to much enjoy my time at this site. Part of the draw for me is the Transport Museum next door and three of my visits have coincided with days when the buses are running. But there is more to do.

Caravanners have much to explore by car. Motorhomers, who stay put once pitched, can catch a bus to Solihull or, after a short walk, to Birmingham or they can walk or cycle to Wythall station (1.5 miles) to catch the train to Birmingham or Stratford. There is a big Sainsbury close by. It is a long walk, although I have done it in the past, but easy by car and not too trying by bicycle. However, I recommend the rural route via Willmore and Bateman Lanes. Smaller convenience stores can be found on Station Road as well as a Chinese and chippy. Despite the proximity to Birmingham, the site is very rural and has a lovely countryside feel to it. The managers I met were lovely and the lady willing to chat which is so kind and enjoyable.

I really like it here, but I hope a small amount of funds are allocated to tidy the place up a little.

Great for a few days stopover

Back again for our stopover on the way home from the Peak District. Lovely warm welcome from the friendly wardens after a dreadful journey. Site not too busy as no Shows on at the NEC which can make it rather busy at this time of year. Site is level with lots of trees around so a real headache for the wardens this time of year. Brilliant Farm Shop and Restaurant just down the road. (Own facilities used!) Very easy access to/from the motorway, thanks for being here for us. See you again next year.

Convenient but uninspiring.

Very convenient location, facilities clean, but it's essentially just a large car park. Wifi was dodgy and lady in reception not very friendly or helpful.

An Odd Site

This is a large, spacious site which is very easy to access. The wardens were, as usual, excellent, friendly and very efficient. If you have a car there are plenty of places to visit locally and we enjoyed a visit to Packwood House. You can also pop next door to the transport museum but we found this a difficult place to be during a pandemic. There was no social distancing and no mask wearing (even on the free bus); given COVID rates are rising quickly we felt this was unacceptable, clearly you might not! The site itself is large with flat pitches separated by grass. There are quite a lot of non awning pitches on tarmac, separated by planters rather than grass but they have a pleasant outlook. However there is a lot of storage on site which isn’t particularly attractive and there also seems to be some storage on pitches, leaving the impression that people are living on site. One caravan had an extra large gas bottle outside and on at least one pitch there was a large motorhome, a smaller motorhome, a large trailer and a motorbike/ scooter under a cover. The young woman on the pitch next to us decided to wash her caravan by attaching a hose to the drinking tap and leaving the hose running for what felt like hours while she scrubbed with a washing up brush. We also had cars left sitting with the engine running next to us Showers and toilets were fine, apart from having to walk past the open chemical toilet and the open industrial bins to get there! It just didn’t feel like a holiday destination to me and I was uneasy, probably unnecessarily, about the feel of the site.

Large But Tired Site

Visited Chapel Lane site as an overnight stopover in October 21, the site is large and pitches are well spaced but the site looked tired and in need of a little investment, this probably wasn't helped by the number of older shabby outfits, that appeared to be seasonal bookings, that blighted the landscape. The warden was less than friendly and took Covid safety concerns to a whole new level, which was unfortunate on the guy who booked in before me who had forgotten his mask and, despite only one person being allowed in the office, and the perspex screen on the reception desk, the guy was forced to book in whilst standing outside whilst the warden handed everything from behind the door, the toilet block needed some investment as it was looking very untidy, it was being cleaned whilst we were there but that wasn't enough to make them look good.

Another visit

This site is near our daughters home in Birmingham and ideal for family visits, this is the second time we have stayed and again experienced excellent facilities, the wardens were friendly and welcoming. We look forward to our next visit which will be soon (next month)

Good stop off

We only stayed for one night on our return from Devon. It is in a great location, not far from the M42 and M5. The site was clean and well maintained, including the toilet and shower facilities. Lots of hot water in the morning. The pitches were good and level. We found it could be good for a future few nights away now we know all the places to visit that are in the area.
