busy, busy.

Lovely area to visit with plenty of walking opportunities. Site well kept and clean. The site was very busy for a mid week but it appears it's always like that as very popular area to visit. Our pitch was on the road side of the site so some noise from that however it seemed a bit less crowded there which suited us as we has 2 cats with us and we're able to walk them without to much bother (lots of dogs). Showers/toilets nice and clean although I felt the shower pressure could have been better. Lots of mines to visit but castle closed mid week while we were there so disappointed about that. Didn't eat out but will do on next visit. Curry cabin in Hope gets good reviews.

First trip of year.

Lovely quiet site.Everything you expect from a C.C . site ,spotless toilet and shower blocks.Site well kept.Wardens very helpful.You need to go well stocked up with food,only two small shops in town.Neverseen as many Pubs in a small town!

OMG!!

We have stayed here many times before and looked forward to our first visit this year. What a shock and so disappointing to see that all the privacy hedges have been hacked to death. We felt like we were sitting in a goldfish bowl; everyone can now see everybody else, there seems less protection from the wind and the site just looked ugly. We love Castleton and just feel the site didnt have the same 'feel' about it this time. Let's hope that spring and summer see the site looking a bit prettier.

Still one of the best - just

No one can knock the location. 'Panoramic views' are a little challenging to find from some areas (trees will grow in the most awkward places - joke). The only small negative is, as previously stated, the tired amenities block. Yes it is quite understandably very busy but it was once hailed as a 'Luxury Site' to match the premium rate. That said, it wouldn't stop us returning and there are sites in more desperate need of update.

A long overdue review

We have been regular uses of this site for years and agree with all previous reviews regarding facilities, cleanliness and friendliness of wardens, all are second to none. Just a couple of up to date things to note and our recommendations for all things local which are within walking distance.... The Poachers Arms which is advertised on the clubs info is all but closed down now with dreadful reviews of late, best to avoid. Best pub for food is without doubt The Nags Head but is popular so you may need to book. Our favourite cafes are old hall tea rooms in hope and Three rooftops in castleton, dog friendly with great food. Fabulous Indian takeaway in hope is Curry Cabin who will deliver free to site. If you fancy driving into Hathersage try Hathersage social club, amazing brunch and waffles but booking is a must here it's very popular. Finally, we feel strongly that if the site says no arrivals before 12, it means no arrivals before 12, if you do break this rule you are simply penalising the non rule breakers in your attempt to bag the best pitches and inconveniencing the wardens. You know who you are !!!

Firm Favourite

We've been here several times now and have always found it an excellent site! The toilet blocks are spotless ( I have to admit, I rate all sites on the basis of how clean the toilet block is!!). The staff are very friendly and the site is well laid out and maintained. It is the perfect place for a walker with added bonus of being a short walk away from the lovely village with excellent dog-friendly pubs!

Great site !

A well reviewed site so I won't repeat the obvious. Great location near a great very friendly village with some of the best pubs around anywhere. Walking is best way to see the area. We count ourselves to have been there when the snow fell it was superb. Wardens clearly doing a great job and unobtrusive to boot. Just a quick word about the best route to get here from north of England. The Chesterfield route past Chats worth is a chore. Route thru Sheffield is manic at a weekend. We now use the A57 skirting around the north and west of Sheffield took a full hour off the journey time. The only very short challenging section is the road up the A57 thru Bamford. Only a couple of miles and worth it.

Lovely little haven

Just returned from a weekend break at Castleton. This is our second visit to which I can only describe as a lovely little haven. The site is well kept and the wardens are friendly and welcoming. We were fortunate enough to have arrived during the snow and the surrounding hills and scenery were breathtaking. We visited the blue John mine which was a great experience and well worth a visit and the town of castleton is lovely. Brilliant weekend away. We will definitely be returning

A very beautiful location

I just had a week on Castleton Site and thought it was perfect. Great access, well-spaced pitches, most very near to the shower block (which, incidentally I found to be nice and warm despite it being zero degrees outside, clean and not "tired" at all as someone else described them). A short walk to the village and some great walks nearby, friendly wardens, peace & quiet, what more could you possibly want? Thanks Caravan Club, had a wonderful time :-)

Other peoples kids!!!!!

Before the rant, nice clean tidy site with very efficient and effective wardens. Yes the shower block is a bit old school but always kept clean and servicable. Pitch maintenance for an all year site was very good. I like the poles to stop you driving on the grass. Personally I agree with pitching rules and regs from a fire regs requirement but also prevents invasion into your personal space. Our rant is about other peoples kids 7 of them to be precise who choose to play in the shrubs and edgerow by our caravan causing damage to the flora and forma dragging fence post, old bits of concrete as well as constant shouting. Well done to the warden for stopping this. The parents were from the opposite end of the site having a lovely quiet peaceful time - typical. Castleton - lots of pubs, we stuck to the castle inn, service a bit slow at times, but great food and ales.
