Site in need of TLC

We really looked forward to our 1st visit to this site as we have heard a lot of good things about it. Arrival/check in was to the usual high standard and the staff are friendly and welcoming. Unfortunately, the site itself was a bit disappointing. The driveway and pitches were worn and muddy (we assumed there had been torrential rain for days but it had only rained 1 day). For us the site seems to need some extra TLC. The area outside the club is lovely and plenty of walks and cycle routes.

Just use your own facilities and have a great time!

Just back from Carsington. Check in is becoming more fraught largely because every site has a variation on a theme. Some guessing is involved. Anyway, we took the bikes and instead of circling the reservoir we took a route through Bradbourne and on to the Tissington Trail. Ride down to Asbourne and back to the site through Kniveton. A really pretty route. quite hilly but worth it. The site is fine but we have stopped using Shower blocks etc as we don't like the queuing and rubber bands etc. Just use your own facilities and have a great time!

Not what we expect of a Caravan Club Site

On the driveway up to the site notices have been posted advising new arrivals to stay in their vehicle until they reach the front of the queue, and then to pull up to the stop sign, no problem, pretty basic instructions which we followed, once the van in front had booked in I pulled up to the stop sign, which is on the barrier and my wife went to book in. Well you would think I had run over a child by the response of the very stern female warden, apparently we are to supposed to stop at the stop markings on the road (which you can't see if following another van) this warden was extremely rude and for the rest of the booking in process treated my wife like a child, we have been caravaning for some considerable time and visited many sites we don't expect to be treated like children. It may be worth noting that there is a difference between a sign and a road marking, and if you can't see the road markings you can't comply with them. All other wardens were great and friendly as you would expect, site was great walks fantastic. Won't be going back however, once bitten twice shy.

WOW, what a year it’s been. Thank you to you, our wardens x

This is going to seem like a long review, but I want to do my best to give everyone the honest thoughts, due to being such a challenging year for us all, and most certainly for the wardens due to COVID. No matter what has been thrown at them, be it personal reasons or work, they have been such a pleasure to talk with, kept a smile and been as positive as the time in hand as allowed them to be. The site is lovely, and has an abundance of wildlife, from various birds to plants. Although I’m usually very active, this year due to my illness, I have been unable to walk very far or cycle, but have thoroughly enjoyed the peace and quiet in the week, to allow me to think and draw. The wardens have worked very hard this year, to do their upmost for the safety of us all due to coronavirus, and yes, we are tired of listening about it, but they have kept to cleaning all the facilities and even disinfect the bin area. All I can say is I’m appalled at how others don’t care or help with any of the hygiene, or the rules of the site, not only the toilet and shower areas, but also the waste disposal points. My husband having to clean after others, in all of these areas, as to leave for wardens is very debilitating to say the least. And worst of all is other dog owners. What a magnificent dog walk, for dog owners to ruin, not all dog owners, but maybe a small minority, to leave mess/facies all over the site and also dog walk. The dog walk is not just for dog owners, but for everyone to enjoy, and it’s a shame, as those that don’t clean up after them will spoil it as dogs will be banned all for the sake of ignorance. This site is amazing, and we need to keep it that way, and the wardens are wonderful, and have worked harder this year than other years, as we have seen such a influx of non caravaners due to the lockdown on travel. Let’s all hope that 2021 will bring us all a happy and healthier caravanning year than this has been.

Good ish Site

Having arrived at the site early, I politely asked if I could come on site before 1pm, only to be told no, which to be fair I expected due to Covid restrictions etc, however having had a long journey I asked if could quickly use the toilet as I was pretty desperate, but again I was denied any form of access to the site, which I found pretty poor. Instead I was advised to drive down the road to the visitor centre, pay £5 and use their facilities, but unfortunately when I drove to the visitors centre it was closed! so I had to use natures garden instead, which was not great. When other friends arrived at the site early, they were all told that they couldn't park their vans in the outside overflow carpark and go for a walk, as they would prefer us not to park in their car park until 1 pm or to just stay in the vans until 1pm, or alternatively drive down to the visitors centre in all of our vans and each pay £5 for the day. We found this quite astonishing and pretty rubbish to be fair, so we just hung around the vans outside until 1pm. Anyway once this debacle was over and done with, we found the site to be very pleasant and clean. The walk round the lake was a long one, but we did stop in a pub on the way to quench our thirst! Ashbourne town is a fair trek from the site and the taxis are in short supply and not cheap £25 approx. Overall nice place, staff were a bit funny, but I think this may have been due to them trying to be a bit too over cautious with the Covid stuff, rather than demonstrating some basic common sense by allowing one of us to use the loo! Not a bad location if you are happy with long walks.

Super 1st visit

This was not only our 1st trip to the site but our 1st trip this year, so we were a little apprehensive in the current situation. We need not have worried, the site had implemented good safety measures and we quickly felt comfortable and relaxed. The facilities were spotless. The site staff were friendly and helpful. The site is in a lovely position and the views were fabulous. We loved the dog walk through the woods. We hope to go again next year.

Great for families but not for us

We were given a pitch near the toilet block. There was a constant banging of the toilet door all day and late into the evening. Also from 6.00 am. The noisiest site we have been on so far. Kids running around during the evening and early in the morning. Not for us at all. Also there was no recycling all rubbish went into one bin regardless. The site itself is set in a lovely place with woodland and trees and very close to Carsington Water which was lovely. Also we saw that people were emptying their cassette toilets and then Using the drinking tap to wash it out which we were horrified due to current COVID situation. Germs etc. Definitely would not stay here again we prefer peace and quiet. This may have been due to location of the pitch

Great site, but in retrospect, not for us

We booked the Carsington, Club site, looking forward to the trip, but arrived from the Lakes, after being rained on , to the prospect of a windy , and rainy three days. We decided to call it a day, and go home early, sadly, as that is not our way. The site is well organised , and staff seem very efficient. It is pretty, and well placed for the reservoir, and local walks and bike trails, BUT, we, although we had bikes with us, were in our motorhome, and thought that once we had cycled around the main reservoir, there was not much left to do, in the very windy, wet weather we were having. No walkable or bikeable pubs or towns, so we were feeling marooned. We feel it would be brilliant for caravaners with a car, or younger more energetic people, who would love to take advantage of the area, on foot or bike It is a brilliant proposition , but for us possibly too far away from it all.

Peaceful site in a unique setting

A warm and informative welcome to this lovely small site set amongst the trees. The facilities on site were very clean and new COVID-19 rules were applied well. The reservoir within easy walking distance makes a great place for walking and paddle sports.

Reassuringly safe feeling post lockdown visit

This is a very attractive site, with spacious pitches and although quite large, it has an intimate feel as it is divided into sections. It is superbly well maintained and the organisation to ensure safety in the current climate was excellent. The toilet block was really well organised, so that there were never more than three people in at a time. We only used the showers (we were there in the heat wave and needed slightly more water than on board showers provide!) and never had to queue. I think a lot of people were using their own on board facilities as much as possible, as requested. It is situated within a ten minute walk of Carsington Water and the cycle round the reservoir is not to be missed. We did it easily on regular bikes and we are very much 'your average cycles, aged 72 and 62'. We tried ebikes (hired in Ashbourne) for the Tissington Trail which was a great experience. But it was such a lovely site, with great pitches, and we had fabulous weather, so we spent quite a bit of time relaxing by our van.
