Fabulous site - cannot wait to return!

I stayed here for 1 night - it was my first solo trip with my dog and it couldn't have gone better. The staff were amazing! So welcoming and friendly- dog lovers also who made my Jack Russell feel very welcome too. Absolutely all needs are attended to - even the most amazing dog shower. The site has easy walks for dogs as well as the obvious reservoir walk. The reservoir was in sight of my back doors through tall pines- beautiful location. I got tv reception through my normal aerial and could stream video via my phone. I cannot wait to go back - I just wish it was open all year!

Close to Reservoir

First visit to this site. We followed the directions to the site, but passed by it. Not the first to do this it would seem as we entered the well signed site next door who directed us a little further down the lane. Good welcome at reception and we set off to find a pitch. The site was very busy but we were of course able to find one. The site is set amongst tall trees and so the grassy areas under the trees are rather patchy. There are some sunny pitches but these are quickly taken. Wood fired Pizza on site on Saturdays - good value and good quality. There is a chip van on Fridays, but we were not here then. Usual facilities available and in good and clean condition. All rubbish placed in the same bins, recycling apparently done by the collecting agency. Carsington Water itself is a short walk away and is a good walk around. The visitor centre has a cafe outside and a restaurant upstairs with outside seating. The breakfast here is good . We cycled to the Tissington Trail. We decided to join at Tissington, the cross-country journey involved some steep hills. The trail itself is a good ride and has tearooms at Tissington and at Hartington. If you need public transport, then the local bus service is being changed and at the time of this review it no longer served the campsite. We were directed to a service called Derbyshire Connect. This is basically a ring and ride service and it is excellent. Min notice of 2 hours before your journey. Pick you up and take you anywhere in Derbyshire and return you at an agreed time and not expensive. The more notice you can give then the more likely you will be able to travel.

Excellent.

It's a lovely spot. Spacious pitches and wonderfully well maintained. There are a number of pleasant walks directly from the site including to Carsington Water Visitor Centre which is worth a visit. The facilities are superb and spotlessly clean. Special mention to the wardens; Jane and Brian who couldn't have been more friendly, helpful, accommodating and patient. The only drawback is that if, like me, you're daft enough not to read the detailed instructions and go straight to your satnav it can be difficult to locate. The signage at the entrance to the site is I think, smaller than is usual for CAMC and slightly obscured which doesn't help. There's nothing they can do about that.

Very pleasant one nighter.

This is a fantastic site on the edge of Carsington Water. We found a lovely spot near the facilities. Some levelling to one side to ensure motorhome was level. Not a problem. The facilities were very good and kept clean. The staff on arrival were very friendly and helpful. We was on our way home and this was a one night stay, but we are so impressed with the site we will be returning to spend a little more time there. We arrived on a Saturday, and it was pizza night, we enjoyed our pizzas. Great spot and location. Well recommend it.

A very split site - beware

Ariived for 5 nights and the first 3 were wonderful, peaceful and quiet in a great location situated in the pine woods. However, when the weeknd starts, all hell breaks loose. It turns itself into a very noisy site, and I do just mean the kids, in some ways they were the quiet ones. I think the wardens do a graet job in a very difficult situation. We overheard the warden trying to have a sensible converstion about the noise from one group and the abuse he had to endure wss just unacceptable. The club woudl probably do itself a favour in giving up the lease on this site (assuming they do not own it), it certainly is not the standards that we have come to expect from the club over the past 25 years. So advice is use it midweek, but keep well away at weekends.

Sept visit

Arrived on Sun of the very busy Aug BH weekend. Site was pretty much full, however we were met with usual polite and helpful staff who pointed out all the available pitches. Despite the busy weekend the site was smart and tidy with all facilities perfectly clean. Lovely site for Carsington Water itself, we’re cyclists and paddle boarders so an ideal location. We spent 2 weeks at the site and during that time the wardens were amazing at keeping everything absolutely 100%. Bins emptied very regularly etc. The attention to detail around the site was also impressive, grass cut regularly and most areas were golf fairway standard. Edges to woodland and bases around trees were strimmed neatly, and nice touches like the herb garden, play and seating area ‘lawn’ in front of the reception clearly reflects the pride of the warden team. Really pleasant fortnight, thank you!

G & Ts are ready!

Our second visit here this summer. We picked a quiet pitch next to a new and expensive looking set up with two men sat outside. After a very pleasant walk across the reservoir dam we returned to find that this had become a loud group of people drinking wine. At about 4pm, there was a shout (see title), they moved on to the gin and we moved on to another pitch at the far end of the site! Such things must be real challenge for the staff; the "party" was still going strong when we took the dog out in the evening.

Great short stay

We were originally due to stay at the Uttoxeter Racecourse site for two nights over the August Bank Holiday weekend but our booking was cancelled a few days before we were due to arrive by the CAMC due to the the security situation and the mass trespass there. Thanks to the helpfulness of CAMC customer services staff we were able to secure another booking close by at Carsington Water. We loved this site! it is very nicely situated right by the reservoir and we managed to get a lovely quiet pitch near the top of the site with plenty of privacy and space to sit outside. There is lots of woodland and trees - it reminded us of Center Parcs. One drawback would be the lack of sunshine because it is do densely wooded (there wasn't much this weekend!) but there are other areas which are more open. We enjoyed being able walk directly to the reservoir and cycle round it too. Not much time to do anything else on a two night break but we did have a drive out and came across by chance a lovely small vintage cinema in Wirksworth with a bar which was lovely. All in all a great short break not too far from home.

Good for families with noisy children

This is the first bad experience I have had at a Club site - so bad I had to leave after 1 night because the noise level was unbearable. As I wasn't offered a refund for my booked nights I feel justified in warning campers who want a relaxing break that they will not get it here. The hyperactive children who had no respect for other peoples pitches, turned the whole campsite into their adventure playground, screaming and shouting until after dark, no parents in sight. Then the next morning an extremely loud lawn mower started up. Add to this a few disgruntled dogs and you get the picture - noise, noise, noise. Also the grass pitch I was one was half mud where someone must have used a groundsheet. The pitch should have been closed until the grass had recovered. Consequently I was just bringing mud inside the caravan as I didn't want to make matters worse by putting down a ground sheet. I can't comment on the facilities as I didn't use them, feeling that no Covid precautions were being followed. I suggest, if concerned about Covid, that you take your own hand sanitizer. Such a shame. One site I won't return to.

Ideal site to explore the Peak District

We visited Carsington Water for four nights from 15th to 18th August. The location is perfect for exploring Carsington Water and the Peak District. We arrived at 13:00 and the warden met us at the parking bay before the barrier and politely confirmed our booking and membership. Payment was managed efficiently and we were free to choose our pitch. The camp is set within a pine and rowan tree plantation with pitches located in several avenues and cul de sacs. The excellent facilities are well maintained by the site staff who do their utmost to keep everything spotlessly clean and tidy. Sadly, some campers are incapable of wiping their feet before entering the toilet blocks, picking up toilet paper they have dropped on the floor, flushing the toilets and occasional dumping dog poo bags by the waste bins. The wardens must just despair. We found a pitch in what seemed a suitable position equidistant from the centrally positioned facilities and a water and waste station (of which there are several). We had just got set up when a family set up next to us. All seemed fine until the dogs emerged from the car, two pugs with the most horrible screeching barks. One immediately ran off and started fighting another dog on the other side of us and had to be pulled off, with no apology and oblivious to the concept of dog training or control. Next, two more families arrived, related to our neighbours and also with their dogs barking. Although they pitched elsewhere, base camp was next door to our ‘van and the noise continued until 22:30. Regrettably, barking dogs across the site continued to be a problem throughout our stay. Needless to say we moved pitch first thing next day after first asking the warden who was agreeable and found a near perfect spot with views of Carsington Water through the trees and quiet ! There followed three great days (and nights) walking around Carsington Water, through Dovedale, Ilam Hall Park and Wirksworth. So overall, we enjoyed our visit to Carsington Water and would return (probably during school term time). If we could request one thing of the wardens it would be to ask campers on arrival if they had dogs and impress upon them the importance of keeping them under control, including barking so that the enjoyment of others is not impacted and where necessary, take action where they are a persistent nuisance.
