This is probably our favourite site and we can't rate it highly enough. It's situated in woods and has no toilet or shower facilities which suits us as we use our own anyway. Many fantastic walks direct from your van. Abundant wildlife to see. We enjoyed watching Red Squirrels, Great Spotted Woodpeckers, Nuthatches, Treecreepers and all manner of Tits and Finches whilst having breakfast in a morning. Very friendly and helpful wardens. Road down to Borrowdale and through Grange is narrow in places but we just go steady and it's fine.
Our favourite Club site
The best site in the network if you want to get back to nature. If it’s birdsong, red squirrels, unrivalled walks, fabulous scenery, then this is the site for you. It’s the one site on the network that we’ve returned to time and time again. And we’ve already booked for next year. For the uninitiated, there are a couple of things you need to know. Access is over a narrow bridge with a 6’6” width limit. Don’t worry, we’re 7’3” and have the best part of a foot either side. The narrow road continues through the village of Grange. It can be off-putting to those who haven’t towed on narrow roads. Lorries and the bus make it through several times a day. So don’t be put off. The site is in National Trust woodland. The Trust won’t permit the Club to use the usual gravel on hardstands so instead the club has to use a fine slate. It does get walked into the van, even in summer. Rain drains slowly through the slate, so it might pool on some pitches. Not many and not often. The site is in quite dense woodland with trees overhanging most pitches. Pine needles fall in winds, especially in autumn. And leaves. We make good use of the vacuum cleaner to keep on top of it. The dense trees mean some pitches can be dark and only a handful have any sort of view: we wouldn’t be permitted to have a site at all if the vans were visible from outside of the wood. But you don’t go there to sit in your van. You go to take in the walks, or to sit by the lake, or take a trip on the boat to Keswick. We’ve been more than 20 times and not exhausted all the walks from the site yet.
Expensive under equipped site
Expensive site for a club site without facilities. Many of the pitches are tiny in comparison to similar private or other club sites. Approach from keswick can be busy and daunting for the larger outfits. Final approach through manesty and accross the bridge can be tight especially with walkers abandoning their transport in the passing lanes. On a positive note the wardens are extremely helpful.

Great site
Lovely place, I parked my campervan at the end nestled in between the trees. Loved watching the birds on the feeder while having breakfast. I was out all day every day walking Wainwrights or cycling so can't say much about the site during the day but I suspect it was as good as the evenings. A lot of dog walkers and a few noisy children but that's life. I extended my stay by another 4 nights to make 9 in total, I guess that speaks volumes. Definitely be back next year and won't make the mistake of leaving my canoe at home.
Private and secluded by a lovely lake
This was my first trip to the lake district and my partner said this site would be a great base for us. In his words its not as 'commercialised' as the Windermere area of the Lakes.
We stayed 7 nights in total in a little cul-de-sac on the site with 3 other units by us, very private and a nice level pitch.
You do get alot of pine cones dropping down on the roof of the van off the pine trees, wasnt sure if was the wind or the red squirrels holding some kind of protest and throwing them at us :0)?
We arent the most experienced at towing a caravan and like many other reviews for this site the approach isnt for the feint hearted at times, but is doable just take your time.
We drove down Borrowdale Road at 2pm on a warm sunny Sunday afternoon with our caravan on arrival and there was alot of people parked up on the edge of the road visiting the lake. Drive slowly, keep a very careful eye out on the hedges as most have concealed walls in them and you can get down.
Once onsite it was lovely, peaceful, a short walk to the lake, great little shop. Well worth a visit and would happily go again.
Walkers Paradise
Stayed 2 nights at this beautiful campsite. Unfortunately our sat nav took us in the wrong end of the site so the approach to the site was on a very narrow road and was quite scary in some parts. Lesson learned ,always check your handbook for directions before setting off! Wardens were lovely and helpful and Mike helped us with our TV reception. This is a great site for walks from the site. Through a gate at the end of the campsite will take you to Derwent Water really stunning then at the beginning of the campsite will take you to Cat Bells absolutely stunning views. We also visited Lodore Falls Waterfalls which was lovely also. We only left the campsite once to go for a meal at The Mary Mount which was also lovely. This is a spotless pretty campsite and would return again coming in the right way though.
A GEM OF A SITE
We were delayed on our journey and concerned about being late, so our first experience of the site was a very helpful phone conversation with the site warden. On arrival, explanations were full and helpful - with a further reminder about the absence of a toilet block! The site office sells lovely cakes which we felt obliged to sample (!) as well as a good range of basics and essentials. We chose a pitch near the bottom of the site, all of which is amply wooded. This, combined with the generous size of the pitch, gave a sense of spaciousness, even though the site was almost full. An unexpected bonus of the absence of a toilet block is the extra sense of not being crowded. The service points and waste disposal were easily accessible and there was ample evidence that this is a very well cared for site. Thankfully there is no uniformity on the site which is a bonus. the pitches come in different shapes, though all seemed to be a good size - ours certainly was! The hard standing combined easy pegging for awnings with being easy under foot.
We have three small dogs and were delighted to find that opportunities for walking them onsite and beyond were excellent.
The setting is simply superb! Two minutes from a lovely walk along the banks of Derwentwater, further into Borrowdale are some of the best walks in the Lakes (or anywhere else for that matter). Keswick is a short drive away and offers many attractions. Ashness Bridge and Watendlath are well worth a visit (though there is a tricky right hand turn if approached from the site).
This was our first visit, but it won't be our last to this gem of a site.
Beautiful site.
Stayed here a couple of times now and we have never been disappointed, it's lovely and peaceful, Ideal for Derwent water and Kayaking, paddle boarding, also a great walk into Keswick.
The facilities are just what we needed, we didn't use the site wifi as we have our own so we could get TV and internet.
The staff are very friendly and helpful.
We love the place and will be back again, it has everything we need.
Peaceful site
I stayed here last autumn and was looking forward to returning. I arrived last week in the extraordinary heat we were having and parked my caravan in a lovely shaded spot. The site is so peaceful and well maintained. Staff and site shop are both very helpful and convenient. The lake is only a 5 minute walk away and there is the most beautiful and quiet cove/beach area from which to picnic, swim or enjoy water sports. You can also walk around the lake or to Keswick from the site. Other walks from the site include the famous Cat Bells.
Perfect
What a lovely, lovely site. Some of the pitches have such a lot of room, you can hardly see any other caravans/motorhomes.
We had the perfect pitch (7) for seeing red squirrels.
The walk all the way around Derwent water is easy and very scenic. Use a map to get through Keswick and find the route again.
