A lovely site but with some reservations

We've just got back from this small and quite intimate site. I agree with a previous reviewer that the site is rather tired now and the shower block is much in need of renovation. The wardens are delightful and very helpful and we had a lovely stay. But some niggles. The site is on the Bolton Abbey estate and we rather felt that the estate was a bit money grabbing. Plus, the CMC obviously have to use the estate signage. So you have to look out for the tearoom sign which has the site sign at the very bottom. We very nearly missed it and at least one couple drove up and down for an hour looking for the site (how they turned on those narrow dale roads is beyond me to imagine!). There is little waiting space and there's a problem. Because arrival time is 1pm - and those in the know arrive much, much earlier than that. Hard for the wardens to turn them away because where do they go other than block the access road. Then those of us who stick to rules get the worst pitches. There was a LOT of grumbling about that. We arrived at 1.35 and only had the choice of two pitches - a number of rigs had arrived well before us. Bad, very bad. The site has a lot of trees so unless you are lucky, you can get stuck on a pitch that gets very little sunshine. Also, it would have been helpful to mention that to access the site means going through a very narrow old arch. Terrifyingly narrow actually - it's immediately after a bend and caught us out completely. My husband is an excellent 'tower' but was convinced he had banged the van (he hadn't). Forewarned would have been forearmed. Last things - the most gorgeous walks, along the river, up the dales, endless paths. Brilliant. But we have a young dog and there was hardly anywhere she could go off the lead. Either it was leads only or there was stock. But a great stay and we loved the area.
