A hidden gem

A tremendous improvement in facilities has made this an excellent site although it could do with more hard standings as the grass pitches had been so damaged they were out of use. I did not expect to walk the 20 yards to the perimeter fence and be able to photograph a huge red deer stag and his harem of 9 hinds in the field next door - wonderful. The down side of this site is the awful approach road with huge speed bumps and many potholes.

Nice site, but

The arrival process was efficient and the welcome was excellent. Due to the poor weather a large number of grass pitches were closed which resulted in only a small number of hardstandings available, we chose pitch number 25 which was at the lower end of a short gravel roadway with a small motorhome opposite on pitch 24. These pitches numbers 22,23,24,25,26 and 27 are not staggered as a result it is front window to front window and the gravel roadway narrows for pitches 23,24,25 and 26 making the units closer together (still within the 6m rule). After 2-3 days the small motorhome on pitch 24 moved on to be replaced by a large 3 axle motorhome which completely blocked any view and made it difficult to get a vehicle in and out of the parking area for pitch 25. To make matters worse another large 3 axle motorhome arrived onto pitch 26, it was not parked as the pitching instructions (ie parking space- vehicle - awning) but vehicle - large space, this meant that from my awning to the vehicle was only 4 - 5m it was not noticed even though mowing had been completed and when reported it remained, it appears that if you have a large outfit then site rules do not apply. Due to the lack of space and access problems for pitches 22 to 27 the club needs to reassess their suitability for larger outfits. We found the site was quiet and on other pitches has a open aspect, the toilets were excellent.

enjoyed a week here

We stayed for a week at the end of September for the first time since the renovations. Very impressed with the standard of the new loo block and helpful staff. I was glad to see that the mirrors in the gents wash cubicles are higher than at other sites, we are not all vertically challenged or 12yrs old and don't need to shave. The washing up sinks must have been built for the smaller person, can they be raised for taller people and have boxes for short people to stand on? I did spend quite some time looking for the dishwashers but they must have been hidden away. The price is creeping up but the site is nearly full and when we have stayed before so it must be about right.

Perfect for a getaway to the New Forest

Stayed here the last week of September and even though the site was almost fully booked, it was peaceful and spotlessly clean, from the grounds to the amenities - the showers are great, and the washing machines/tumble-dryer are a blessing when it rained the one day. The staff were extremely welcoming and helpful, even when I ran out of gas at 20:00 the one evening, I was helped out very quickly which was appreciated no end. A credit to the club! The shop is small, but has the few things you could need in an emergency, and Brockenhurst village is not far away for all the extra's if needed. Walking is great, with the New Forest right outside the entrance and is suitable for dogs even though there is no onsite walking area, this is not really required. The road to the site is somewhat potholed, but a slow drive in makes this an easy task, and ensures there is no speeding as it is narrow at a few points so getting passed an oncoming motorhome/caravan requires pulling to the side if not timed well. Will be back next year without a doubt.

September Visit

Stayed for ten nights at the end of September having previously visited 20 years ago. The new shower block is excellent and unlike some other members we did not have problems with flooded shower cubicles. Very quiet at night. Easy 25 minute walk into Brockenhurst for local shops and for a slightly longer walk of just over one hour to Lyndhurst. Both sets of wardens are excellent and a credit to the club. Only one negative is the speed some members travel around the site, with many travelling well in excess of 5mph and although not a fan of speed bumps these may deter irresponsible members. The approach road is in need of repair but providing you travel slowly is not too much of a problem. When we were there it was quite wet and whilst we were on a hard standing some of the grass pitches did seem quite wet and maybe if funds allow the club should consider converting some of the grass pitches ( especially some of the new ones) into hard standings. Overall we had a great time and look forward to coming back in the future.

Lost Caravan!

This is the second time we have visited this site since it reopened this time to meet up with a friend. Since August the approach road has deteriorated that it is now the standard of a farm track. There is one pot hole by a speed ramp that I sure has swallowed a caravan and there is room for more. The track from Ober Corner to the site, the only place this section of the track goes, is just constant hole some very deep. The Club needs to sort this out with the Foresty Commission before the site reopens next year, serious damage could be done to an outfit or a cyclist going to or from the site. As for comments about dogs on other reviews we did not see this as a problem as long as people pick it up. Great site good Warden, and and don't forget the bakery in the village and the new fish and chip van.

Redevelopment review

Have visited the site many times over the years and at last it has the facilities it deserves. Neither me nor my wife had any problem with queuing for toilets or showers. I would agree with other reviewers, the access road has clearly been damaged by building site traffic and it's a shame that it wasn't put in good order before the site actually re-opened. We had no choice of pitches as we arrived late and had the only hardstanding pitch left which by good fortune was excellent. A standard problem on the site which is unacceptable in view of the area right outside the gates is members exercising their dogs on site. Long leads should be banned on site, if a dog is allowed to wander on grass it is obvious what it's going to do,

Excellent site if you can make it to the entrance!

We've been going to Black Knowl site for about 30 years now and love the new toilet block and hard standings. However, over the last 30 years the approach road has slowly deteriorated, not helped by construction traffic during the revamp, to a point where it really does need resurfacing. There is one speed bump that has unacceptable pot holes either side and the one mile approach road is now a mass of pot holes. Not sure who owns the road, probably the Forestry Commission, but hopefully the Caravan Club (I still refer to it as CC and don't like the new logo!!) can liaise with the owners and come to some agreement.

The new Black Knowl

Have just returned from site having stayed 2 weeks in September. Read other recent reviews and can only repeat more hard standings as grass was too soft and only resulted in people moving after one night onto a hard standing causing them to lose part of their holiday time and increasing movement on site. Wardens were having to manage the situation and did so in a very cheerful manner. Ladies showers flooded!!!!!! Access road getting progressively worse. Welcome on arrival wonderful. Wardens great. Site so peaceful and relaxing. Site kept in very good condition except for problems with grass pitches. Our fourth visit and met old friends and made new ones as seems to be the way here. Will be back in 2018.
