Autumn at it's best

Black Knowl is fantastic in the Forest at this time for all the seasonal colours. The site was full as usual, but at this time of year the grass pitches are not used for obvious reasons. This is my third visit, and as usual there are high standards of cleanliness in the facilities and the team running the site are always extremely helpful and friendly. The entrance off the main road is kept shut with a gate at this time of year due to rutting deer apparently. This means that the site is the only one open, and the Forestry Commission site aound the corner is closed for the season. So the area is peaceful and quiet with the only noise you'll hear overnight being the sound of owls hooting and the occasional pony in the distance. It's an easy walk into Brockenhurst for supplies, and plenty of well looked after cycle and walking paths to follow. In fact most of the people you see are cycling or walking dogs. When driving to the site, definitely follow the instructions provided so that you avoid the narrow streets of Brockenhurst and the ford. And the last part off the main road and down to the site can be a bit on the bumpy side, so keep an eye out for the speed humps. And finally you should ensure you don't arrive early as the final stretch of road is too narrow for vehicles to be parked up waiting to get in. I'll be back next year!

Busy because its such a great site - book early

We loved this site, peaceful and a few steps away from miles of forest walks and cycle rides. Yes, the approach road's surface is a bit gnarly and care is needed but returning to the site one night we came across a herd of deer led by a magnificent stag wandering along in front of us. Nowhere seems too far and Brockenhurst has a station, a Tesco Express, a few pubs, Indian restaurant and a small tea room called Rosie Lee's that serves the best homemade sausage rolls. Hardworking staff and spotless facilities made this a a great week away.

Great site, great staff but a couple of things to look out for.

First visit to this site in early November 2021 and it does live up to all the previous reviews regarding quietness, space of pitches and facilities with excellent wardens on site. On our visit site was full so don't expect to get "pick of the pitches", you will get a limited choice as this site was over 80% occupied by motorhomes and their towed cars/electric cycles with only a few caravans. Perhaps a name change to Motorhome and Caravan Club! Be careful when coming down the access road off Rhinefield Road after the first speed hump the road through the woods (Forestry Commission Maintained) resembles a tank course for about 300m with some seriously bad pot holes. Please look out for these as if you drop your caravan wheel into one you will bottom out. Also try to avoid pitching close to the Motorhome Service point as there are so many it gets very busy with water topping up and waste emptying, although you may not have a choice if the site remains full. Despite these minor gripes the site is excellent and one I shall return to in the future.

Our favorite New Forest site

Stayed here one night in October 2021, virtually same week as in 2019. Love this site as it's location allows stunning New Forest walks right from the campsite. It's a shame the fish and chip van only visits on Wednesdays, so you can easily miss out. This time we moved here from the Centenary site, which for us is not as well located. So Black Knowl will be our first choice next year!

Another good Club Site

Very pleasant site, well maintained (as you would expect from a CAMC) nicely spaced out and the cleanest toilets and showers I think I have seen so far on a club site! Good location for cycling, walking and Brockenhurst (walk across the heathland). Very quiet site, but that might reflect the time of year as it was outside of school holidays.

Speeding and Dog Exercising

This is an excellent site and in an excellent location, but visits are spoiled by too many members who fail to adhere to the speed limit. I don’t mean by an extra mile or two per hour, but by a lot more than double the limit. Can’t these members read? The Club should post electronic speed recording devices around the site. Also, more and more dog owners are just walking their dogs around the green spaces around the camp site, very often between pitches so their dog can do it’s toilet business. These members should be filmed by other members and then banned. This particular location is fantastic for dog owners with the forest common land just outside the gate, so why do they have to wander around the site until their dog(s) perform? The Club should place signage around the site so guilty members have no excuses. Site staff should also give a verbal warning when carrying out check-in on arrival.

Does not disappoint

Being just over an hour from home, we love Black Knowl, and have been many times. Brockenhurst itself is delightful, with cafes, wine bar, an excellent butcher, Tesco & Co-Op. Our electric bikes enable us to explore far and wide on the many traffic-free routes through the forest. Lyndhurst is an easy cycle, with interesting shops and the New Forest Heritage Centre being well worth a visit. One minor disappointment was the Fish & Chip van (Wednesday) - having been on a 20 mile ride to Lymington and beyond, we were looking forward to a fish supper, and not having to cook. We were very surprised that they had run out of all fish by 7pm (open until 7.30pm) - surely that's the mainstay of their business (they serve several CAMC sites in the area throughout the week)?? Let's hope it was just a one-off, otherwise maybe the site should consider a different vendor?

Perfect!

Love this site. Set in the New Forest you are spoilt for choice where to walk without needing your car. Perfect for our black Labrador - lots of streams to cool off in after the walks and hot weather we had at the beginning of the summer. Brockenhurst, a lovely walk across the lawns, has everything you need for shopping - a fabulous butcher/fishmonger, green grocers and bakers, as well as gift shops, Tesco’s and a co-op. We only shopped once elsewhere over the 3 weeks we stayed! Plenty of places to eat from breakfasts, cream teas to dinners and drinks. Recommend the Snakecatcher, Commoners Wine Bar, Forresters, New Forest Inn and The Oak Inn in Bank. Just a fabulous place. Only small criticism was that wardens were a little slow refilling the hand sanitizer points by toilets and service points so have your own handy. Can’t wait to be back next Autumn.

A gem of a site in a perfect location

We've been to this site dozens of times over the past 30+ years and it never fails to deliver a magical break away. Literally in the heart of the New Forest, Black Knowl is in an isolated but accessible location with wildlife just the other side of the entrance. For peace and quiet this is also a perfect choice as there is literally no sound after 8:00pm and you could close your eyes and imagine you're the only family on site. A slight negative is the attitude of some caravanners towards children and we noticed our children receiving frowning stares from a few couples. Luckily this doesn't bother us not our children. Cycling is popular on site and rightly so because there are dozens of excellent cycle trails nearby, both on and off road. Some great pubs and restaurants in the local vicinity too, we recommend the Foresters Arms and the Snakecatcher in Brockenhurst village - both easy walking distance. The site wardens were helpful and friendly and always had time for a chat or offer advice. The facilities are excellent and newish (I'm old enough to remember the big round toilet block) and have disabled and family rooms available should you need them, access via a key. As an aside, and this relates to all Club sites, in recent years it seems that motorhomes are greater in number than caravans and some of the enormous ones can sometimes give the site the appearance of a lorry/coach park when they congregate together.
