A lovely site in the city

We stayed here for 3 nights over New Year as we got tickets for the NYE fireworks. What a lovely site, clean toilet and shower block with underfloor heating. The staff were an absolute delight, giving us advice on how to get back from the city and even put on drinks 3-4 pm on New Year's Eve. The main gate did close at 10 for vehicles but that didn't bother us as we travelled from Abbey Wood rail station direct to Victoria and even went by bus one day to Greenwich. Abbey Wood town was ok but felt safe with the high fence and security cameras. The site was lovely and quiet, I did only score this a 4 as you do hear a bit of aircraft noise. Some work was commencing on the day we left but not sure what but we will have no hesitation in returning if we need to be in London.

Good site, which is very handy for visiting London.

We visited the site for a long weekend recently and found the site up to the Caravan Club's high standards. I would highly recommend thi site if you want to visit London. One moan though about the 10 o'clock curfew; this can be very inconvenient for us as we usually drive our motorhome off site. Have to make sure we are back early!

Excellent stay to explore London

We are in our 70's and new to caravanning, this is our first visit to a club site. Apart from the reviews we had no expectations. If this is the standard to expect I think we are in for some lovely visits to far away places. Staff first class. facilities were excellent (only one toilet block open but certainly not crowded) Lovely site to explore London with local buses and train within a few minutes walk. I note the remarks of the previous reviewer, if this is a tired and worn out site, what pleasures we have coming. I agree it is a little difficult getting on to the pitches, Our c'van is like us a little ancient (2001) with the Motor Mover not working, but we managed. The MM is now operating. The opening times did not worry us as we used local transport so walked in. I can understand the security aspect though. Unfortunately we had to leave 24 hours early, not only did we get a refund but as we wanted to get away early was offered any time out and someone would open the gates for us. What was noticeable, was the number of people using the site as a base for their work. An altogether lovely experience.

Now ge getting old and un-loved

This site is great for everything that you would expect of a key London site, however it is becoming un-loved. The site requires a major overhaul (last conducted in the early 1990's), the facilities are becoming old and worn. The pitches are now too small for what the club requires in regards to space between units (alleged fire regulations) and the maintenance of the pitches is sparce. Another major issue is the time the gates are closed and opened, why close at 10pm and do not open until 8am. They say it is for security, but anyone can walk through the open side gate. Motorhomes and pods (high-end where they have removed speed bumps to stop the noise, so much for safety) are taking over this site, motorhomes only stay for short periods but take up all the best pitches. i will return because of the location, but please show some love to the site.

grandkids visit

Hi, this is a excellent site, and kids friendly,we all enjoyed our recent stay.If I have any criticism,is the lack of "leaving day " parking, where I would like to make a trip into London on last day,a nd park up for half a day,and paying for it. I did park on site for day but paying more or less full overnight fee. There is no parking on roads nearby.

Great location

Perfect site for visiting the sights of London. 5 min walk to main line railway station with trains every 10 mins to both east and west of city. Two adults and one child cost only £17/return trip - brilliant and at less than cost of car parking. Site really needs no additional facilities as it is used primarily as an evening stopover for visiting the city but it is was well laid out with excellent sanitary facilities and very friendly and helpful staff.

Excellent for London if you don't mind trees

I didn’t get off to a very good start here, but I grew to like the place. I am not a tree worshipper. They tend to make a place gloomy and much worse for me is having to pitch beneath them. The majority of pitches here are overhung by trees. I know the clue is in the name but not all places with “Wood” at the end remain wooded today; and besides I would not let this stop me trying a site for the first time – other positives can and often do compensate! As it happens, there are a number of pitches not overhung by trees and with a more open aspect; but then your difficulty is finding a level one. I tried a couple before I settled on a good open and bigger than average pitch, though still with a slight slope left to right necessitating the levellers - essential here for motorhomes. Eventually the attractions of the site overcame these initial downsides. I would come here again. The site is large, pretty, on various levels and very well laid out. Everyone has mentioned the convenience of the close by Abbey Wood station with regular trains into Charing X or Canon Street. You can go to Rochester or Chatham and other places as well. I was not here long enough to get to nearby Greenwich but I managed two trips into London for the National Gallery and St Paul’s (horribly expensive I thought) combined with some shopping in Oxford Street, a day in Rochester and a day part relaxing and part exploring Woolwich and the riverside. This is not really a place for those who just wish to chill. A good Sainsbury is close to the site (you have to go beyond the station as it is not next door as the map given to me suggested). There are one or two fast food outlets near the station, but I would not recommend the Chinese cum chippy which was not very nice and had very miserable staff. The loo blocks are excellent, TV good, 4G excellent, as you would expect here, and so I don’t use club Wi-Fi. In autumn, under trees, leaves are a bit of a bother but the very noisy leaf blowers were a bigger nuisance being an almost constant presence when I was on site until darkness fell - except on Sunday, a welcome day of rest evidently. I know this has to be done, but one hankers for the days when big rakes were the implement of choice. The London City airport means some aircraft noise, but this is a very minor issue I found. Most often on a westerly track, departing aircraft – the noisiest - are going away from the site and landing aircraft are on a path almost 1.5 miles north. I often saw bigger aircraft in holding patterns for Heathrow but the noise from them was barely noticeable. I found it easy to follow the directions to the site, but on my departure I took the more direct route along the A206 all the way to the M25. For motorhomes, I think this is fine but all the road signs towards the site are along the route recommended in the club book. Motorhomes were in the majority at Abbey Wood. On the whole this is a good place to be.

Great site for visiting our Capital

What an absolutely lovely site and very handy for visiting our capital, handy for the transport links into the city. The facilities are plentiful, good and clean, but some are starting to show their age, some of the male showers have little or no adjustment for hot or cold, it was a little hit and miss with the mixer. The only other gripe was the leaf blower, I know the wardens want to keep the site clean of the Autumn leaf falls, but the constant loud leaf blower noise on a Sunday afternoon was a little annoying to say the least. Do not let that put you off however, once you arrive you can leave your car and enjoy London, we stayed for a week for the price of a hotel room for the night in London.

Good site for London

Site has good sized pitches. Two facilities blocks (so if one is closed for cleaning there is always the other). The usual friendly staff. Buses & train close. Not as handy for central London as Crystal Palace but good for visiting the several NT places south side of the Thames and Greenwich. There a some shops/diners just before the station and, over the bridge, there is a Sainsburys, which is very handy if you are there for a while. It warns you not to use satnav. The directions given is a roundabout route really aimed at those towing so that you approach from the best side to turn in. Motorhomes can use the satnav without problems.
