Not a pleasant experience

Being new to caravanning and, having tried Club Sites (one of which was very over-crowded) we decided that CL’s might be ‘more us’ so we read the reviews of a few in/near the Brecon Beacons and decided on 9 nights at Tirmynach. Judging by the reviews, it was perfect for us: basic, great views, spacious, short walk to Hay on Wye……..Well, it was certainly all these so what’s to moan about? Basic is fine, dirty is not. Especially at £12.50/night. Dear, oh dear, that shower was dreadful. One year ago Timotheus said “The lavatory and shower were adequately clean but might not satisfy the most fastidious”. I beg to differ. OK, so I am fastidious but I have non-fastidious friends who wouldn’t put their dog in that shower. It was cleaned once in the 9 days we were there. And, when I say cleaned, the floor was half-swept – no attempt had been made to sweep behind the door – and that was it. Maybe the cleaner was concerned that the door would fall off , it was in such a bad state of repair. The clothes hooks were rusty, there were cobwebs everywhere, the floor of the shower was green with mould, and a dirty tissue lay on the step over to the cubicle all the time we were there. I was tempted to get my rubber gloves out but I didn’t have any bleach and my inoculations aren’t up to date! I did pull up some of the grass by the steps as vegetation almost barred our way to the hut in the first place. But, I didn’t have the stomach to remove the filthy doormat at the entrance. Furthermore, my husband suffers from arachnophobia so I had to do a spider check every day. On day 6 we were appalled to learn that we had to pay 50p for the ‘privilege’ of using this ‘facility’. We assumed that, since there was a lot of credit on our arrival, this was supplied by the owners. Wrong! We were just lucky that previous visitors had left the meter half full. Thank-you, whoever you were. I can only assume that you put the money in before you looked around you, and decided not to bother. On a positive, the shower curtain was clean and the loo, next door, was considerably better – the bin was emptied twice in 9 days and the lovely hand-wash & hand lotion were a nice touch, albeit incongruous. When the attempt at decorating is complete, the loo will be “adequate”. Sadly, it would only take a bit of effort for the shower to be likewise – a days D-I-Y and a daily clean. Also, there was nowhere for grey waste – hubby hurt his back lifting the container up on to the chemical waste disposal unit so, thereafter, we poured it into the hedge, against our environmental beliefs. Nor was there a dog poo bin so we used the general waste bin (bagged, of course). Such a shame, especially given that this CL is Member Owned – we assumed this would guarantee a minimum standard. This site could be so good – it really is spacious and the views are fabulous. But, we wish we’d gone to the small commercial site at the end of the lane – it has great reviews and was 50p a night cheaper, including showers!

Peace on the edge of town

See Hay and surrounding countryside easy walk to shop, town and all it has to offer. This is the site if you want to be left in peace and still be able to go out for the night in the town and not have to drive home.

Laid back and peaceful

We prefer CL's as we find them more relaxing, Tirmynach was chosen because it has a toilet and shower. As Timotheus has said, they might not satisfy the most fastiduous but we found them ok. You are camping in a beautiful meadow with wonderful views and plenty of space between vans. The walk into Hay is easy, there are 2 dog-friendly stiles and an easy to follow footpath. As a note to dog owners, because there are sheep in the fields, most fields have an electric fence around them.I thoroughly recommend a walk along the river to the warren, beautiful. We never actually met the owner, useful information can be found in the phone box and you just post your money through the door. Would definately visit again.

Marvellous views yet very close to Hay-on-Wye

This is just what I am looking for in a CL. An enormous field with nicely spaced electricity points with really good views in all directions. You really feel that you are in the countryside. The field is crossed by a public footpath which leads to the road to Hay on Wye which is a comfortable 20 minute walk away. Dog walking is easy. The lavatory and shower were adequately clean but might not satisfy the most fastidious. The lane leading to Tirmynach is single track but it is not far from the Hay/Clyro road. There are no access problems within the farm. The owners' greeting was relaxed and a useful information sheet is supplied.

Beautiful Setting

This site is a large open field with good access. The hook-ups are along one side but are well spread out and does not feel restricted. The field is all of the advertised 7 acres and any visitors who do not need hook-ups could be 200yds from everyone else! The water point is adjacent to the trough for the sheep in the adjacent field and led to endless amusing incidents. Showers and a toilet are available although we did not use them. This site has easy access to Hay either walking (20 min easy walk) or by car. The same footpath running through the site allowed us to walk to Hay Bluff from the site - always great not to use the car. This is a working farm, the family were always helpful and very friendly. We throuroughly enjoyed are stay and wholeheartedly recommend it.
