Nice little site

Stayed for 4 nights in May. Good location for easy access to local area attractions. Ideal base for a cycling holiday. Easy access to site. Level pitches. Washroom/showers/WC all new and kept very tidy. Would recommend - we intend to return.

Great central location for sight seeing

The site is on a working farm about 10 minutes from Dorchester.  It is in a good position for sight seeing - we went as far as Sidmouth in Devon, Bournmouth and the New Forest. There is a pub about 10 minutes drive away in another village. As well as providing electric, the site also provided a television aerial, which was good as we couldn't get anything using our own aerial.   The only negative was that we stayed when it was harvesting time, so the farm tractors were working late into the evening, and early in the morning which was quite noisy and dusty.  Other than this the site is nice and quiet.

A hidden gem

Just returned from 3 idyllic days away on this  beautiful, peaceful, tucked-away site and we are already planning when we can come back! We have two well-behaved dogs who like the freedom of being off-lead around the site, which was very much appreciated and "Dick's Plot" was absolutely perfect for us. The wet room shower (which we didn't use in the end) with 2 loos is tastefully fitted and very clean and an easy to use security lock makes it accessible at all times of the day/night.  5 mins away by car from Tesco supermarket on the edge of Dorchester is very handy. In the words of Arnold Schwarzenegger "I'll be back" ??

Nice site

Stayed here for a week site flat grass cut short. Extra £2.00 a night for the use of showere and toilet was a bit steep especially when the next site I stayed on was only £12 all inclusive with shower and toilet. I know it was new but being a bit greedy to make the momey back

Second stay at this CL

We have just returned home from a weeks stay at this site.  It is only a short distance from the Dorchester to Weymouth road, so easy to tow to.  This road is also a major bus route, so during both our stays a number of the visitors have used the buses to get all around the local area rather than trying to park.  The site is flat, well drained and regularly mowed, but is still surrounded by wildlife.  This working farm site is just a short walk from Maiden Castle, Europe's largest Iron Age hill fort, our dogs loved their walks up there but you do need to be aware that sheep are left to graze. The owners are really helpful and friendly.

touring caravan june 2014

No-one around until the third day. Pitched up where we thought best. Grass was cut after mentioning it in local shop! Word gets around. Owners seemed pleasant enough and asked us what we thought about putting in a shower/toilet, admitted drainage wasnt good on pitch but seemed concerned. Overall we had a pleasant stay, local pub is a twentyfive minute walk (closed Mondays)This is a working farm and you must bear that in mind.Close to Dorchester and local supermarket, only twenty minute drive to Weymouth. Superb dog walking territory.

Bit of a mixed bag

We've just had two nights here having decided to risk it despite the previous review.  We like peace and quiet and don't mind a bit of quirkiness, ramshackleness and would prefer that to something too neat and orderly. The site is a little bit run down and some of the hard standings were full of weeds, nettles around the outside of the site etc, but there is electric hook up, water, waste water facility, chemical disposal etc, all in good working order.  The owners are very friendly and welcoming.  There is a hut on site with in formation leaflets - it would have been even better if they could have put a toilet in there.  The thing to be aware of is that it is a working farm (or estate) so there are comings and goings of tractors etc.  You have to be ready for the unexpected - we had a lorry load of concrete slabs being unloaded literally feet away from our van at 8.15am, but apart from this the site was lovely and peaceful.  We had a great cycle ride to Sutton Poyntz, lots of hills on reasonably quiet roads and a lovely pub when you get there. On the site there were 3 other units in total and 2 of them had been before and returned happily, so that tells you something about the beautiful location and ease of access to Weymouth or Dorchester.  We probably won't return but only because we're unlikely to be in the area again.

Not a good choice

This site is scruffy and unkempt, and the view from three sides was of nettles and rusting old farm machinery. The grass was sky high also and had not been cut for weeks. We finally found a TV aerial in among the nettles. The owner was extremely pleasant, but we would certainly not visit again.

Comment from Community Manager:

Many thanks for your review. The CL owners have contacted us as they are very concerned that you did not like their site and were not aware of any issues at the time of your stay. As you can see from previous reviews they work really hard to ensure members have the best possible time when staying at The Manor House and as such they would like to address the concerns you have raised.

There are nettles around the site (a valuable wildlife habitat) and they have taken steps to create a clear strip between the fence and the undergrowth (however having received complaints about strimming it is often a no-win situation)! Some of the farm machinery is stored beyond the CL site but please be assured it’s all actually still in use and not left there to rust. The CL owners are looking at how they can re-arrange items, but, like many CLs on The Club’s network, they are a working farm, and this is part of the whole experience of staying in Monkton. The grass has been mown on a regular basis, however, with an exceptionally wet winter half the site remained waterlogged and unusable until May, and this has made it difficult to attain the lawned site condition that they usually achieve. The TV aerials are always checked and left coiled round fence posts, within easy reach. It maybe that one slipped behind the fence and the CL owner would have been happy to help at the time if they had been made aware of this.

I hope this helps address any concerns and please note if you ever have any issues when staying at the Manor House please do speak to the CL owners as they are always happy to help. The site is in a beautiful location and guests often return year after year.

What a treat!

This is a beautiful little site. The facilities are neat, tidy and clean. The walks from the site are beautiful and not too difficult. We stayed here to go to the Dorset county show and it proved very easy to access the show site. The site is very peaceful and secluded. We enjoyed very peaceful nights sleep! We enjoyed walking the dog in the local area. The lane is generally quiet and the local drivers slow down when they see you walking. The access to fields and maiden castle are just a couple of minutes away so there is no excuse for not taking plenty of exercise! Mr & Mrs Norman are a lovely, friendly couple who made us feel very welcome. We hope to return for another visit and would recommend this site to others.
