Nice area

I have one big gripe about this site, in the details it tells you there is WIFI, BUT it does not state you have to be in the pub/restaurant, which I found to be rather annoying, if it says WIFI surely it should mean availability on your pitch. With this in mind I find the £20 pitch fee very excessive. Food in pub was great and also shower/toilet room very warm and clean. But will not be going back.

Disappointing

Initial impressions were very good - large pitches, nice views, many good walks from the site, etc. However, during our visit it was necessary to mention several matters to the staff - none of which the management felt important enough to come and see us about. In addition the site is next door to the village's large play area which could be noisy at times - must be much worse in the summer long evenings and holidays. We were aware that there was going to be a wedding on the Saturday after we left - I'm certainly very glad we left when we did !! All waste from the pub was put into the skip by the CL's waste water and chemical disposal facilities and this was overflowing whilst we were there and smelt revolting. After this was emptied there were papers blowing around but no-one seemed to come and tidy them up. We felt that not enough care was taken in the upkeep of the CL and the pitch fee of £20pn was somewhat excessive. During our 4 day stay we did not see anyone who showed any interest at all in our occupation of their site. There were a couple on the site who had 4 dogs which they left in their van whilst they went out every day and evening. These dogs barked and howled all the time so not exactly a quiet stay. Unlikely to visit again.

Spoilt weekend.

We have just spent a long weekend on this site which was spoilt as there was a wedding on the Saturday. The music in the evening was so loud we were unable to watch TV or read and it was impossible to sleep until 1.30 when the noise finally stopped. We were put on the pitch nearest to the venue and the other 2 caravans on site were at the wedding. It was a nightmare! We use CL's as they are generally quiet and tranquil and we have stayed on some wonderful sites. When there is a wedding booked then we think the CL site should be for wedding guests only as it is very unfair on any one else. Our plans for the following day were ruined as we were too tired to do the long walk we had arranged. We wanted to speak to the owners before leaving but they were away for the night so we left the details with a member of staff and he said he would pass on the comments and the owner would ring us. We have been back over a week and are still waiting. We will not be using this site again!

Excellent site and area

We've just returned from seven nights at this great CL, probably one of the best we have stayed in. Very organised with pitches allocated beforehand. Returning members can pre-book preferred pitches, we were on pitch 1 which is huge, you can almost get two vans on there but they are very strict about the five van rule. As others have said its very clean and tidy. Food in the pub is excellent and as we ate there five times proves we liked it. Try the mussels, excellent. As we booked last year we paid £15 per night which is on the high side for a CL, I feel, but this year its increased to £20 per night which will probably stop us returning. If the site is full then we didn't feel that one combined toilet and shower would be adequate. Another slight thing was that although the site is adults only there is a children's playground about fifty yards away and as we had lovely weather it did occasionally spoil the tranquility. On the whole a lovely site and a great part of the world, prefect for dogs too as they're allowed in the pub.

Fabulous CL

We spent the May bank holiday here.  Very well kept site and all pitches have water and electricity.  There is a small wet room/shower (which you get a code for) which is kept really clean and warm with plenty of hot water.  The Crown is lovely and homely and open from 10 am, food is great and the service is excellent.  Good access to walks close to  the site (Tees Railway walk and the Teesdale walk), so you won't need to use your car unless you want to venture further a field.  A lovely long weekend.  We will certainly go back again.

Wonderful Teesdale

I love Teesdale and the Northern Pennines so the location of this site is perfect.  The site itself is flat, so we didn't need to use ramps, there's water and power right next to each large pitch and there's a toilet and shower room.  Try to put some money aside to have a meal in the pub, the food is great.

A lovely little find

My husband and I enjoy spending weekends away without the kids and this adult only site is fantastic for a kid-free break. We were sited on pitch 3 overlooking the hills. The weather was fantastic but obviously cold and there were lots of lovely walks in all directions.  Took a nice run down Mill Lane which was only a mile but felt longer due to the incline on the loop return up Cobblergate Lane.  Note to self: must get fitter! Middleton in Teesdale is a lovely village and reminded us of Beamish!  Spend a while browsing in the second hand book store there.   The Crown itself is more of a eatery than a pub and we dined there twice.  Ordered olives for a starter for myself and they were the best I have ever tasted, the rest of the meal was divine and you could tell love had gone into making it.   Will return.

Could this be CL of the year? It should be!

This recently refurbished CL is ideally located for access into the North Pennines. The site has five huge hardstandings, each with hook up & water supply. A dedicated shower and toilet is also available to site users with the entry code from the pub staff. The site is far enough away from the pub to not suffer from any noise pollution at all. CDP & waste water disposal is located at the entrance to the site along with a refuse container. However there was no recycling available which, in this day & age, is unusual. Adjacent to the site is the Tees Railway Walk which heads east to Romaldkirk & west to Middleton-in-Teesdale. In fact there are numerous walks from Mickleton, and one circular 7 mile walk taking in Eggleston & Romaldkirk, passed 4 pubs! The Crown is open all day [from 10 am] and has a superb menu available as well as three local real ales. With really friendly & enthusiastic staff & with the addition of WiFi access in the pub, what more do you need from a site!

one of the best

In this day and age of closing CLs and rapidly closing village pubs you just sometimes get a special feeling when you happen across an establishment which is so professionally run and set up for a long term business strategy such as this one!! Clearly offering a high quality CL accommodation is part of their plans. What an amazing CL, clean tidy, excellent facilities. Water and electric on each pitch. Good clean toilet and shower. The owners are very friendly and most helpful people you will ever meet on the CL network. 10% discount if you eat in the pub or a discounted takeaway menu which came in very handy when the gas regulator gave up. Its 100yds to the pub but we never got disturbed by it and once they have the hedges planted you probably won’t even see the pub form the caravan pitch. Good central location for exploring the upper teesdal, go and visit the waterfalls. Footpaths directly off the site and a disused railway 5 mins walk away............what could be better for a keen dog walker like myself. Lovley pub dogs. Do take Sunday lunch, one of the best.

Short Child Free Break.

Arrived on site on 18/8 for 4 nights. From the moment we entered the pub found that the staff were friendly, helpful and very professional. The site and facilities were pristine and the views spectacular,( I already knew this having lived in Teesdale years ago.) The meals, Sunday lunch in particular were excellent. A superb little site.
