Just had our second stay on The Barton and enjoyed every minute, Plenty to do and see here, bike riding excellent, walking excellent, plenty of room, owners great,This is a farm CL so if you expect it to be pristine or manicured its not for you but if you like getting back to nature and lots and lots of cows to entertain you will not be disappointed. If your there on a Sunday do go to the Puffing Billy for lunch, its down the Tarka Trail at Great Torrington, an absolutely first class meal and not to expensive,... or anyday of the week for a cream tea.
A real find
First time staying here and I sincerely hope it wont be the last. Everything I wanted and with quite a lot of autumnal rain I really appreciated the hardstanding, the surfaced track and the excellent paths. The site is quite sheltered so autumnal winds didn't bother the awning too much. The space between pitches is generous and each has its own picnic table. It's very clear that a lot of thought and care has been put into this CL which is well run and tidily kept. With hook-ups, wifi etc it's got what you want but you're not paying for all sorts of things that aren't necessary. It suited me very well. Many thanks.
Another fabulous visit
Just had another wonderful 6 nights at The Barton. Very comfortable in the paddock field. Exceptional space, peace ,tranquility . Wonderful friendly hosts have worked hard to make this a brilliant CL. Many thanks Ross, Nicky and family.
Never fails to please...
We've just spent another couple of weeks based on this site and were lucky enough to be pitched in our favourite corner. This was our 4th visit in 5 years and, as ever, we had an enthusiastic welcome from Ross and Nicky (of course there was the extra 'covid-19' paperwork which was soon completed). There have been some substantial improvements to the paths and pitches which have made the site even tidier than it had always been.
We always make great use of the easy access to the Tarka Trail and, this time around, with local venues (NT mostly) only partly open we picked Ross's brain for good local walks. We can recommend the walk from Appledore (The Quay) out through Northam, the Burrows and around the Golf course; easy walking and splendid views.
We'll be back next year assuming we can find a slot on this great farm CL.
Looking forward to seeing you in 2021 Ross and Nicky...

Hospitality +++
Thank you Ross for your exceptional hospitality. We had the best service ever at a CL. I will not go into detail as you might be inundated with requests đđ.
We loved our unexpected breakfast at The Cyder Press and weâre sad we didnât get another meal there before we left. Access from your site to cycle the Tarka trail was easy. Laying on the spectacular floods added to the excitement of the trip but we were relieved your farm is above the flood plain.

A lovely place to relax
Please ignore the previous comment. We have just spent two lovely nights on this site. OK it was on the very well-manicured grass field but there was more than enough room for everyone. The welcome could not have been warmer. The facilities, whilst basic were perfectly well looked after. The dairy cows, calves, ponies and goats looked very well cared for and provided a perfect rural background. An ideal location for a rural retreat
Disappointing
Iâm sorry but this is not being run within the spirit of a CL. We booked for one night in August and turned up to find all the hard standings taken. We had to stay in an adjacent grassed field with 3 other units; thatâs 9 in all when the limit is 5!! We were told that 3 of the people on the hard standings shouldnât have been there but because we were only staying for one night there was no point moving them! It is advertised as having a toilet which is great between 5 units but we were now sharing with 9!! Why do we pay to be a member of the Club if we are not going to be treated as such?!!
Donât get me wrong the setting is lovely and the owner was perfectly civil but seemed very pleased that he could somehow get around the Caravan Club CL rules. He even asked us if we had booked a hard standing...hang on itâs advertised as all hard standings so we shouldnât have to book one specially. We wonât be returning and would warn any potential bookers to be wary.

Relaxing and friendly
From the moment we arrived we were made to feel truly welcome. Ross and Nicky are the perfect hosts. If you want to relax away from it all but know someone is available if you need them then this is the site for you. Set on a dairy farm with cows, ponies and pigmy goats itâs the perfect site to watch the world go by. If you want to cycle the Tarka Trail then Torrington cycle hire have bikes to suit all abilities and they also serve snacks. The cycle track entrance is easily accessible. The bus stops literally outside the farm entrance. The Plough Torrington is a cinema and cafe they also hold tai chi classes. Torrington has Aldi, Co Op and a Spa also a Post Office. The Green Lantern is good value for meals. Torrington has a Pannier market as does Bideford and Barnstaple.
Bike to Bideford, Barnstaple or beyond. Instow has nice cafes and pubs and dog friendly beach. Cafe Du Parc Bideford serves delicious French and English dishes. The park has lots for all the family including a small outdoor pool. Take a trip to Made Well near Hatherleigh and wander the garden and see the animals. Really lovely well priced food served there. We popped in several times. Very friendly. Westward Ho! Has good cafes and pubs. Dog friendly part to the beach. There is a golf course at Northam. North Devon is well known for its surfing beaches. Okehampton has nice shops and cafes. A visit to Torrington tourist information will tell you all the local places to visit. We went to Rhs Rosemoor a must if you love plants. Great cafe there. All terrain scooter available if you need one. It is beautiful all times of the year. The roses were in bud at the beginning of May. Nice plant sales area.
Access off the main a386 to the site was no problem to us. Our mh is 26 foot. Height under the bridge near the site is 11â9â or you can go via Torrington. We canât wait to visit the site again. It is the most relaxing site we have ever been in and certainly the friendliest.
Perfect little site
This is exactly what a CL should be - plenty of room for 5 units on a grassy field close to the farm, in the midst of North Devon's beautiful countryside with nothing but peace and tranquillity all around! Hook-ups for each pitch and water in the corner of the field. The recently built loo was kept spotless and well supplied with loo rolls. The Barton and its neighbouring farm nestles behind the church in the Torridge Valley in the village of Weare Giffard within an easy walk of the Cyder Presse pub. Nearby Bideford and Torrington are both worth a visit - look out for a Hockings ice cream van for the best ice cream ever! The Hedden family deserve every success with this little gem.

A lovely short break
We stayed at this lovely CL for a few days on our way back from Cornwall and were very impressed with the site. We received a very warm welcome from the owner and found the facilities good. The CL is well placed to easily access the Tarka Trail and other attractions, and is in a quaint village. Although on a working farm we enjoyed an entirely peaceful break and loved the starlit nights. A little gem in the countryside - we will definitely be back!
