Perfectly Placed Poplar Farm

A warm welcome awaits vistors at this lovely site. Easy to find and access off a quite B road just outside the village of Kirkby on Bain. With easy access to the Spa village of Woodhall. The site backs onto River Bain which can be accessed by a small path. An old telephone box on the site has novels to borrow and useful information relevant to the surrounding area. We loved our stay and look forword to returning soon.

Relaxing weekend

Had a very pleasant weekend at Poplar Farm. We received a very warm welcome on arrival. Site had 5 vans on and still plenty of space. Good covered service area with bins for recycling.Lovely red phone box contains books to borrow and leaflets of places to visit. There is a good pub a short walk away. It is about 4 miles into Woodhall Spa with lots to see there. There is also a log cabin and a cottage that can be hired, both sleep 2 which is handy for accompanying relatives. We are booked to return soon

Kingfisher Heaven

We stayed at Poplar Farm for two nights on our way down to Suffolk from Yorkshire. The site was easy to find and access and we were fortunate to pitch adjacent to the River Bain. The site was peaceful with some road noise and there are many places of interest to visit in the area - as listed in other reviews. Booking the site was easy and we were warmly welcomed by Fiona. The unique feature of this site is the abundance of wildlife in and around the river Bain. There is a gate providing access to a small area next to the river - a perfect spot for seeing the numerous trout and bird life. I saw a water vole in the distance - the first sighting in over thirty years. However, the thing that made this site particularly special was the flash of iridescent blue from a kingfisher as it flew along the length of the river. I was so impressed that I decided to book the site again for our return from Suffolk. This time I managed to spend a couple of hours sitting on the wooden seat alongside the river bank and it wasn’t long before I spotted a kingfisher. In all, I had five sightings which makes Poplar Farm a must visit site for anyone with an interest in the natural environment. Perfect, and highly recommended. I even saw a Spitfire fly over on it’s way back to RAF Coningsby and the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.

Lovely and local

We stayed here so as to introduce my husband's sister, partner and dog to the delights of this part of Lincolnshire as well as a meal in the local pub which we have been to ourselves on several occasions. We were greeted at the entrance by the owner whilst we were filling our water tank, and told we could pitch up where and how we liked in any of the remaining pitches. We pitched up facing the sun - bit of a mistake as it was so very hot for the 3 days we were there - but not to worry. My sister in law was able to pitch adjacent to us. As we all like to get out on our bikes we cycled to Horncastle on the first day via the Spa Trail - easily found on Google Maps - stopping for ice creams at the Big Chair in Horncastle (highly recommend) before heading back on the trail and on to Woodhall Spa for liquid refreshments at the lovely Petwood Hotel and then The Inn. Day 2 we cycled towards Stixwould and got on the Water Railway (NCN1) at the old railway station - and headed towards Lincoln, stopping at Bardney (again for liquid refreshment) before continuing on to Five Mile Bridge (Lincoln was just too far for my sister-in-law). We cycled back getting off the cycle path at Woodhall Spa, stopped once again for liquid refreshments (a staple) and then back to Kirkby on Bain. Normally on our rides we would have seen an abundance of wildlife - but it was so hot the birds/deer etc must have all been in the shade somewhere. The road running adjacent to the CL was quite busy during the day, but come the evening was very quiet. This CL is very well kept and dog friendly, For cyclists the roads roundabouts are pretty quiet. The Water Railway goes all the way to Lincoln in one direction and Boston in the other - and is lovely to cycle - especially on a calm day (it can be hard work if in a headwind). For those interested in RAF history it is the ideal location - as it is ideally situated for visits to the BBMF at RAF Coningsby and Woodhall Spa and all its associations to 617 Dambusters Sqn. The Kinema in the Woods at Woodhall Spa is also worthy of a visit. The Ebrington Arms is well within walking distance - and serves up lovely food - as well as having strong connections to the RAF - especially World War Two. We booked the site via their web site which was extremely easy, as was payment - which I agreed could be taken off my card once we arrived on site (I had to enter my card details when booking).   My sister in law paid via BACS - though cash was also accepted.

Just a lovely place to stay

We came across this site touring around the old RAF bases but unfortunately we were unable to stay any more than one night due to work commitments but will definitely return. This CL is up there with the best and we have stayed on quite a few if only there were more like this. The field is flat, private, very well maintained and spacious with the river running at the bottom of the field with walks along the banks. It attracted us because of being adult only, very peaceful and relaxed. It won’t be long before this site is booked up permanently, no negatives all positive. Fiona and Bryan who are very friendly who have worked extremely hard in making this ‘just a lovely place to stay’ Thank you…Tim and Helen

Poplar Farm a Winner

We stayed for four nights and have no complaints other than the road noise. Now the negative is dealt with there are many positives to this cl. First was the field and for us was the location. It is very easy to find with good entrance which leads onto a level, well drained field with spacious pitches. Pitches 4 and 5 have taps on the pitch which you can used to link a hose to so keeping your aquaroll full. Pitch 3A is possible but would need a long hose. The field is well sheltered and private. The River Bain, a very clean free flowing river, runs by the site and a nice touch by the site owner is the easy steps he has put in to lead to the river’s edge with a seat to use if you wish. Fishing is available here. There is what looks like a self build red telephone box, very authentic, which is used as a book swap and tourist information point. Behind that is the elsan and dustbin area. A great plus point here is that it is totally under cover which is a benefit when recycling the rubbish and emptying the loo. Just one point about the exit of the cl. There is a bend to the right and I was nearly caught out by a fast car. However I hadn’t spotted the mirror on the opposite side of the road giving a view through the blind area. A very useful touch, for your safety use it. The cl is on the edge of a village and there are several, easy well marked footpaths from the edge of the site, especially along the river. The village pub is only a very short distance from the field and had a good menu, Wednesday to Saturday, and selection of beers. Operating hours were a bit odd. It is closed on Sunday’s and Tuesday’s, with a very limited menu of Burgers on Monday. We visited on the Wednesday and it was busy. Hopefully these hours may change in the future. Back to the location. It is very central for a large tourist area especially to do with WW2 history with local airfields having museums to learn about the history this area played in the war. The famous 617 squadron (Dambusters) were stationed here from 1944 and the Battle of Britain Memorial museum is here at RAF Coningsby where the Battle of Britain Memorial flight is housed. A little further afield is the Lincs coast with its many sandy beaches and the city of Lincoln in the other direction is not far. It is an area I would certainly return as it is just a one hour drive from home

Beautiful site

We stayed at Poplar Farm CL site for 5 nights in mid October 2021. The site is so easy to find, just follow the directions given and you can't go wrong. No single track bumpy roads or tight turns to negotiate. They have 7 pitches but only have 5 vans on at any time, this gives you a choice of pitches. We chose pitch 5 which is next to the little allotment type garden. As well as electric hook up it, pitch 5 has its own water supply and a grey water drain. We were given a very warm welcome by Fiona who explained where things were and gave us local info such as nearest shops, walks etc. The site is fairly flat, there is a " telephone box " information and book exchange and the area for the bins etc was kept extremely clean and tidy. TV reception was good. We saw Fiona and Bryan several times during our stay and Fiona even came over to say goodbye when we left. This was a first for us, makes you feel truly welcome. All pitches are a generous size and the site has hedges and a row of tall trees in front of the stream which is also fenced and gated. The stream is a small chalk steam and it can be fished. My husband tried his luck and caught some small chub and brown trout. Very pretty place to sit and just watch the beautiful clear water running by. RAF Coningsby is just a few miles away so aircraft can sometimes be heard, we did go to Coningsby and watched the Typhoon jets taking off and landing. There is a free public car park opposite the end of the runway where you can watch the planes. Coningsby has some small shops and a lovely cake shop!! There were a lot of tractors going past the site while we were there, they started moving while it was still dark, don't know if this happens all year. It didn't bother us but some people might find it a bit noisy. Horncastle is few miles away and we used the tesco store there for our provisions. Woodhall Spa is also close by, lovely little place to walk around, I did want to go to the Teahouse in the Woods for afternoon tea but they were closed for holiday during our stay. We went to Skegness for an afternoon, took us about 40 mins. Plenty of amusements and rides if you like that sort of thing. Really enjoyed our stay at Poplar farm, keep up the good work.

Ease of arrival/welcome

A week in September.

A very warm welcome on arrival, owners shared knowledge of the area in regards to walking. The pitch we had was brilliant as it had water hook up & grey water point, it is also possible to hook up to other taps so be sure to bring a decent length of hose with the right caravan connection. Bryan was a great help, lending me a set of ladders so I could clean the caravan roof. We were also allowed to have an Amazon order delivered. The only negative point, which Fiona & Bryan have no control over is the road noise, so my suggestion is take some ear plugs. There’s a pub in the village which have a couple of good beers on tap & also a nice selection of single malts. If walking is your thing then you won’t be disappointed. So if you want to have a relaxing site, then I’d recommend Poplar Farm. Thanks Fiona & Bryan, next time we’ll come in our camper van Mabel.

A lovely well run site

I stayed here for 4 nights in August - access was good, easy coming off the A153. Pitching not too regimented and I was lucky to get a streamside pitch which was a delight. Owners very welcoming and approachable. Good walks in the area, although cattle in the fields behind so dogs must be kept on leads. Facilities were clean and good - the raised grey waste drain did mean I had to lift the wastehog to fully empty. At night it was very quiet although there was early morning local traffic (suprisingly noisier than the nearby main road!). Nice retro phone box style book share here. Nicely placed for Woodhall Spa just a short car journey away. Clearly popular as people return to this CL and I can understand why.

Welcome local break

Lovely 4 night stay at, for us, a new site, now very happy we've found this one as it's local for us!! Lovely welcome & advice on ease of pitching motorhome, in general owners were very friendly and helpful and chatty. Very spacious pitch. Super walking whether you have a dog or not along river banks ( heed the advice on presence of cattle though!) along to village and all walking is clearly signposted in the area. Only 10 minutes walk down to the Ebrington Arms which does super food...best to prebook though. Only negative for us would be some noisy traffic at certain times of day but we'd still go back!
