A real Gem

This is a must visit CL site. Super large field, closely mown, with well spaced pitches backing onto a wooden area with views towards the runway. Arrangements for water, wates and rubbish are good and there is a toilet block adjacent the airport operation. We enjoyed a stroll around the airfield and met a very friendly pilot/instructor who showed us an electric plane with enthusiasm. The onsite cafe is a bonus and we can recommend the reasonably priced breakfast. Easy, friendly bookings with payment in the control tower. Good value and recommended if you are travelling near Basingstoke. Great to stay at a CL with added interest.

Great CL with added interest

Booked in for 3 nights, and would have preferred longer. The pitches and site area are a good size and water and elsan points nearby and well maintained. Grass cut short. Good signposting through airfield to CL site. We were soon welcomed by the airport manager, and had a good chat with him. He also kindly showed us around the hangers and shared information about the airfield and aircraft stationed there – most interesting. The light aircraft add much interest, and there is a lovely café to enjoy some refreshments whilst watching the aircraft taking off and landing. Had wondered if road noise would be a problem, but could hardly hear it. Walked the nearby Mill Trail from Whitchurch, about 6.5 miles – very nice. What a great place to have a CL. Will return at some point. Highly recommend.

Super

We stayed here for one night to break up our journey from Dover to Devon. Beautiful location, surrounded by countryside and abundant wildlife (rabbits, red kite, partridge). Very spacious pitches, although bear in mind there is no electric hook up, and levelling ramps are required due to slightly sloping ground. Received very warm welcome from Julia who advised us about the cafe at the adjacent airfield. The cafe provides outside seating which is a super spot to sit with a drink and watch light aircraft come and go. The airfield closes at 8pm. There is some minor noise from A303, but not noticeable at night when the site is very peaceful. I really wish we could have stayed longer.

Excellent Airfield CL

Great weekend. Epitome of how a UK Airfield should be. Don't turn left down Steventon Rd, wait till 'Popham Airfield' sign on the wall, then follow the Caravan signs. Lovely field, short grass & the three essentials for a CL with the five well marked pitches with a wood behind. Bonus is the excellent Club house (24hr WCs opposite) where I enjoyed the food & drink (discount card given on arrival) in their Cafe with so many different visiting public enjoying the variety of activities Popham offers. Lovely walk to Overton (approx 4 miles & two pubs) seeing hares, deer & source of the river Test using the OS map. You will need wheels if you need a shop & visiting local pubs, Bombay Sapphire Distillery, Whitchuch Silk Mills with it's Royal connection not too far. Interesting aircraft with lots going on, while I was there, The Jaguar Club met, Model flying, Drone training, pleasure flights, Gyrocopters, Motocross in the distance, cyclists turning up, spotters & motorcyclists all friendly to talk to and enjoying the day - yet as evening falls, you get the hush back to yourself. A303 audible but no problem. Book it!

Absolutely brilliant CL, highly recommended

Stayed here a few times in the late summer / autumn of 2021 and absolutely loved it !! All 5 pitches are spacious and clearly marked. Water and waste all easily accessible and being just off the sliproad on the A303 makes it an ideal stopover when enroute to /from from the west country. Within easy reach of Stonehenge, Salisbury and all that the region has to offer The fascinating range of aircraft coming and going throughout the day was an added bonus, as were the model aircraft flying displays that take place in the field right next to the pitches. Theres a great wee cafe offering lovely meals and snacks, cakes etc with seating directly adjacent to the airfield where you can sit and chat with the pilots who are only too happy to share their enthusiasm for their aircraft and flying. Will definitely be looking to book again when we're next heading that way. Can't recommend this fantastic CL enough.

Excellent CL

This is a super CL with lots of space and a friendly welcome. Pitches are located near a copse away from the airstrip and buildings. They are level and well-drained. There is a good café at the airfield and there are toilets open for use too. There is plenty to watch with small planes and gyrocopters coming and going during the day. These stop at night. There is a little road noise but nothing too intrusive. We used this as a stopover on out way to the Isle of Wight ferry from Southampton which was around a 45 minute drive away. We’d certainly use this gem of a CL again.

Just want to say what a wonderful site this is! The staff are most welcoming and very helpful. Trouble is I'm a bit reluctant to say how wonderful this site is because everyone will be wanting to go! The management are wonderful and even had a tour of the hangers. There's plenty going on especially if aviation is your thing! If not it's just nice to sit there in the peace and quiet and admire the view, there's always something going on to watch. If you don't feel like cooking there's the amazing cafe on site with extremely helpful staff who cook up an amazing breakfast amongst other delicious things on their menu. This is a must go to CL where a warm welcome is guaranteed!!

Lovely CL

We've used this CL several more times this year following on from our previous stays (and review), and it has now become our go to site when we want to get away without having to travel too far from home. The site is mainly level but does have a very slight slope, but nothing untoward. The arrival and booking in system is very easy to follow and the pitches are easy to find and very clearly marked. The information that Julia sends you when you book is very clear and makes your arrival simple. Each pitch is nice and large and the fresh water and waste points are also very clearly marked and well maintained. Popham is a popular airfield with both a Microlight and a Gyrocopter training school who offer experience flights if you fancy having giving flying a go. There is (weather depending) a nice amount of aircraft activity going on which you can sit and watch. There is a cafe on site which we have used the cafe and can recommend the breakfast if you don't fancy cooking. Alternatively you can have just a drink if you prefer. The airfield closes at dusk so there is no aircraft noise to disturb your nights rest and although the A303 does run alongside the airfield we've never found it intrusive. As this site is handy for both the A303 and also close to the M3 I can also imagine it could be a handy stopover. We definitely recommend this CL and are already planning future visits.

Fantastic CL

We love Popham and have visited 3 times this year. The 5 pitches are very well spaced, grass is kept very short and the elsan, grey water and fresh water points are very clean. There is plenty of wildlife in the area and the pitches back onto a copse. You also have a good view of the runway from the pitches; watching the planes and gyrocoptors coming and going is very interesting. The cafe serves perfectly cooked food and it's great to sit outside on the benches next to the runway. Popham is a very friendly place and we were lucky enough to have a tour of the hangers with the Airfield Manager during our most recent stay which was very interesting and much appreciated. We are already looking forward to our next visit.

Excellent Site

It's a very laid back and easy going site with much action during the day from light aircraft movements. Having said this, it is not noisy by any means and can keep you interested in the activities all day. The airfield cafe' offers great food and drinks and CL users are offered a 10% discount. Popham is very well situated with the M3 and A303 nearby, however very little noise is heard from the roads. Can't recommend this site enough, and would not hesitate to go there again.
