Lovely site

We received the kindest welcome from Mrs. Gallimore, a most delightful lady. The site is slightly sloping but does not take long to level as there are plenty of blocks available. Any effort put in is well worth it as the views, peace and tranquility are exceptional. We recorded a good variety of wild birds around the site including tree sparrows, as opposed to the much more common house sparrows; always a pleasure to hear their constant chattering. The obvious local attraction is the Beamish open air museum but slightly further afield and within easy reach of the site some seven miles away, is Tanfield Heritage Railway. What a lovely experience. The staff, all volunteers, were so helpful and knowledgeable, the line is beautiful, in my view, an absolute must do.

Very helpful

We had booked 1 night whilst traveling from Dover to Scotland as a stop over to visit my parents nearby. However my father took ill and we stayed with my mother. Christine, the owner allowed us to leave our caravan on her site for a few nights which gave us peace of mind as there was nowhere near my mother's to leave it. She was very kind and helpful. The views from the site looked wonderful and we plan to stay there in future. Thanks Christine.

Peaceful but handy for durham and beamish

This is a very peaceful site and the owners were very welcoming however it is on a bit of a slope and we struggled to get level with our air suspension. blocks were available as well if you wanted them . Good value for money and extremely handy for trips into Durham and Beamish. The entrance is on a bit of a slope as well, and I had to dig the motorhome out due to the snow But would recommend this site for a short stay if you want to explore the local area.

Good views, but very boggy in wet weather.

It's not a bad site, but there are only three hard standing pitches and the grass pitches were far too boggy when we went in October. We were guided by the owner to go on the grass when we arrived. Following overnight rain, the caravan was sinking into the saturated ground. Fortunately, we were able to move onto a hard standing. My advice is don't go in the winter months unless you are guaranteed a hard standing.

Friendly Welcome

We arrived at the site to be welcomed by Mr Gallimore, He gave us some literature about the area & 6 fresh eggs which was a very welcoming surprise. The site is fairly inclined, there were plenty of blocks available to help with levelling. As we were only staying a couple of night's we didn't face the front window to allow for the nice view down the valley. The site is very good location for a trip to Beamish which we did. It rained very hard over night & i thought we may have difficulty leaving the site but the ground must be very well drained as we drove out without even a slight wheel slip. Ken & Wendy

Great location for local attractions

Chocks needed. Hardstanding in grass. £15 pn with EHU. Very warm welcome from Tony with some local attractions leaflets, info sheet (see photo) and even some freshly laid eggs. The owners genuinely want campers to have an enjoyable time. Horses in the adjacent field with a lovely view over the valley. Paddock for exercising dogs or children. Great location for Kynren show (only on 6 Saturday nights in August and September but superb show that was well organised), Beamish (although not mentioned anywhere- we still got 10% discount with club card), Diggerland (where our 11 year old drove a JCB and a road legal car), Infinity Trampoline Park in Durham with free parking - if space permits, and walk or drive to nearby Broom House Farm Forest Adventure - great fun and learning experience for (probably) under 13's. Near to Durham P&R though we did not use it.

Very friendly site

We have just spent a very enjoyable week at this site. Christine the owner was very friendly, she came to welcome us and gave us information on local places to visit and came to say good bye and check our stay had been fine. The site is on a slope and you need blocks, the side provide some blocks so it isn’t a problem. The site is in the countryside but only a short distance from Durham, there are lovely views and the pitches are large.

Great little site

We stayed 4 nights in a motorhome and yes it is sloping and tricky to get level. We had a lovely welcome with fresh eggs and local information. We gratefully accepted a lift to Durham station for the train to Newcastle on Saturday morning for a tour of the football stadium and a rooftop tour which we can recommend. As we don't like to take the motorhome off site we found the buses easy to use and can even get to Beamish on a Sunday using 2 buses. Walking to Sacriston via the bridle path and through the woods was much better than the lane to Witton Gilbert. All in all we would highly recommend this site.

Nice little site, but yes, it slopes

This is a nice little site, with a lovely welcome and fresh eggs from the resident hens. As others have said, it slopes - a lot. From memory, it's the first site we've used where we've needed all our blocks of wood, and we accidentally left the rear access door open whilst levelling, and it dug into the ground and cracked. There are a couple of dog walks above and below the site. The road outside the site is only a B road but some cars were going ridiculously fast and it wasn't pleasant using the road with dogs. Durham is nice, and easy to get to. Park and Ride nearby, or you can park in much of Durham after 2PM for free. In Durham itself there's a nice riverside walk. We had planned to visit Beamish on the Saturday, but ended up also spending the full day there Sunday and my wife went back on the Monday too! Make sure you visit the drift mine. Price for two adults for Beamish is £39.50, and this is what they try to sell you. However for an extra £5 you can get a Friends of Beamish membership, and that also includes newsletter and 10% discount on retail and food/drink outlets, so if you plan to buy food in the venue it will probably work out cheaper. Camp site owners said you get 25% discount with CAMC membership, however Beamish is not listed on CAMC offers website so we're not sure if that offer is still valid. Leaving the site with the caravan can be tricky, if you have a large unit. It's a reasonable slope up to the road and on gravel, so even with 4WD we had some wheel spin. Also, it's a good idea to have somebody on the road to let you know when it's clear, because once you start moving you'll not want to stop. The entrance looked tight, but even for an 8M long caravan it was okay.
