Really liked it

This is a great little site. With the weather on Skye the hardstanding was very useful. The owner was very friendly and helpful. Please note it is on a small but very busy little road, which needs to be considered if staying with dogs or children (although our kids were fine). The facilities are basic but as good as any we have seen in other CLs. The pics give a good indication of what the site is like although can't do justice to the view that greeted us every morning. It was lovely sitting in our front lounge area looking out at the mountains and loch. We only had 4 days here and will be back to continue to explore the island.

Mountain weather

We arrived whilst the office was unmanned but easily found the pitch reserved for us – and then changed it to one of the vacant pitches that we preferred. Willie came to greet us in his Tam-o’-shanter and made sure we were settled, he also brought us a gift of half a dozen very fresh eggs. It was a little off putting that the toilets are unisex but with such a small site not a major problem. The shower area could be improved by installing a stool and perhaps re-arranging the shower curtain to give more room in the actual shower but it was clean with plenty of hooks and a shelf area on the windowsill. Whilst there we had rain showers just about every day and were thankful for the hard-standing as a grass pitch would have been a lot messier. We, like others, enjoyed the good food and real ale at The Old Inn which is dog friendly. Visiting it three times in five days. Sitting in the caravan and walking the dog whilst listening to skylarks was a real bonus, as was the experience of being so far north for the longest day which meant it never fully got dark! This site was ideal for us :-)

Brief stay over

We stayed for three nights on hard standing with our own tap and hook up on a relatively level pitch, being reasonably comfortable and located to tour Skye. The toilets and shower, whilst not up to the Ritz standard, were clean and adequate. The local village shop is pretty well stocked with essentials and The Old Ship Inn serves good food in a convivial atmosphere. The site proprietor tried hard to make our stay comfortable.

??

This site simply is what it is. It served its purpose for me, my husband and our 3 young children while we toured the isle of skye. The site is simply a tap, a hook up, a shower and a toilet. It's nothing fancy but for £15 a night.....what more can u ask for. As for anyone that wants to maon about this site......pay £30 to stay on a better site!!!  For £15 a night.....it was cheap and cheerful.  Be warned there is no TV signal AT ALL but it made a change from home so we played boardgames n simply went back to basics.....it was great!!!!!   The day after we arrived the old guy who owns the site came to say hi. His hat was amazing and he brought us fresh eggs......he was lovely!!!   So......if u are happy with a no frills cheap site.....this is perfect!!!!!!!   THANKS FOR HAVING US ??

Visit to Merkadale

This little gravelled CL by the roadside near Carbost has a functional feel but is a great base for exploring Skye. It is up the road from the Talisker distillery which does a great tour for whisky lovers and also near the village pub which does good food. Brenda welcomed us when we were hooked up and gave us some ideas on places to visit. The Fairy Pools walk is a few miles down the road and Neist Point and Dunvegan a little further north but there is stunning scenery all over Skye. A little gem of a cafe is Red Roof near Glendale. With a tap to yourself for a continuous water supply and a view over the houses to Loch Harport this is a good place for a short stay.

I cannot believe that this is a CL!

I would like to echo the comments of other members as to the disappointing nature of this CL. It is situated beside the road with a cattle grid nearby so quiet it is not. It has the appearance on entering of a quarry turning area for vehicles and has to be the ugliest CL I have been on with a black cinder surface.. We had booked for one night before catching the ferry to Harris as it was late afternoon I felt that we had to stay there as opposed to looking around for a better site. We were welcomed by an employee of the owner at the dilapidated mobile home on the site which doubles as an office, loo and shower. The office was a shambles and one would have to be very brave to use the loo or shower. Grim! Now some balance. The owner has installed new electric hook-ups with water points at each. There is a path from the site up the hillside to walk a dog and this was welcome. Overall I find it difficult to believe that the owner obtained permission to have a CL there and that the club is happy to have it in the network.

Comment from The Club:

Many thanks for leaving a review. I just wanted to let you know that the CL Owner works hard to ensure people have a wonderful time at his site and as such has listened to feedback from reviews to make improvements. As a result a new bespoke toilet/shower unit and a separate new office building has been built for the site. Also the cattle grid has now been replaced and as such this should no longer be an issue or disturb anyone staying on the site. The CL owner hopes this addresses your concerns and looks forward to greeting members to Merkadale soon.

Isle of Skye CL

We arrived at the site with no great expectations as this is a CL site and they vary enormously from a field next to the farm to a beautifully laid out site. First thoughts were that it looked like a car park, that it is because it is all hard standing. This is a good idea having been in many muddy situations on grass! You can't expect brilliant sunshine in Scotland, but having said that there has hardly ever been a day when we couldn't go out! The pitch sizes are more than adequate and the views are variable depending on if you are sitting in the caravan or standing outside. Outside you can see the loch and plenty of lovely scenery. The owner Willy, is very nice and gave us free eggs several times in our stay. We were there for 3 weeks. It has a very basic toilet and shower, which people - including my husband used without complaint. My husband did say it wasn't too clean, but definitely not disgusting as someone commented earlier. I prefer to used the facilities in the caravan where ever we go. The site would be nice "prettied up", but few CLs are. The view over the loch is not spoiled by the empty cottage, which is not derelict. I realise people are giving their opinions but many points are totally untrue. The cattle grid does not make a terrible noise, it sounds rather like someone putting something in a metal dustbin. Each pitch has water so you don't need to go off to fill your aqua roll. We have actually stopped at the edge of the road in lay-bys several times and this site is not like that at all. I believe the fact that it is all gravel puts some off. There are some marvellous walks on Skye and this site is very handy for visiting the rest of the island. Several caravaners pulled up only to drive away again, perhaps a deposit system would be better for the owner!

Totally below standard cll

We arrived at the cl early evening and left within 10 minutes. The 'site' is liltle more than a cramped gravel patch at the side of the road. The view is non-existant and the shower/loo facility is a totally disgusting broken down caravan. I can't believe that the Caravan Club feel able to give this site their blessing.

Merkadale 2013

Basic site, exactly as it looks on Google maps. Shower and toilet are in an old mobile home so a bit of a squeeze but perfectly adequate. Willie the owner is very charming. When we arrived in the evening our pitch was easy to find and our neighbours presented us with the eggs that Willie had left for us, Wouldn't hesitate to stop again when passing. First time I've had such good 'phone reception on Skye although not sure if that's a plus or a minus point ! A nice touch are the individual hook-up points and water taps close to each pitch.

Not a nice site

If you like pitching at the side of the road in a layby this site is for you. I nearly died when I got to this site as we had booked for 5 nights. There is a scruffy portakabin on the site which has the toilet and shower in it, which are absolutely disgusting. The view over the loch is spoilt by a derelict building which you look straight onto. There is also a cattle grid just past the site and every time a car goes over it the noise is terrible. Toilet waste is emptied down a toilet which is plonked at the side of the portakabin, not even sunk into the ground. I have been on many many CLs and this is the worst one I have ever seen. Didnt even pitch up no owner present and could not phone him, no phone signal
