Hidden Gem

phoned in advance and arranged our stay, on the phone they explained that there was no hook up and that the shower and toilet were exclusive and that as there was no one else booked in we would be able to have the key for these. upon arrival we were met by Mark, he explained eveything and was very helpful. Tom returned to the site whilst we were talking and was equally friendly, helpful and chatty. we were able to park up wherever we wanted on the field due to being the only ones there so found a nice flat spot (if busier would need levelling ramps). the site was very peaceful and tranquil, we walked into the village although not much there (no shop or pub) but it was a lovely little village, we visited spennymoor which is a little run down but has everything you may need. we then went to Bishop Auckland which was a lovely place to visit. I would definitely visit again for a quiet get away this along with the lovely owners makes this a new bolthole for us we look forward to returning again soon.

Little gem

We tried this site as it was the first time we tried non electric pitch and we are local to the site. On arrival we were welcomed by Tom who was very friendly and informative and then Mark also came to greet us. They showed us around taking time to ensure we were happy with everything and offered any help. After looking around round we diced to pitch on the main field at the highest point and enjoyed fantastic views with piece and quiet. The toilet was cleaned every day and kept spotless, the shower is roomy, hot with good pressure and was also cleaned daily and kept spotless. I have yet to find a better value site with these facilities and felt welcomed throughout our stay. Thank you Mark and Tom, you have a lovely site and should be proud of it, hope to see you again soon.

Great Short Stay

We have just spent 3 nights at Grove Farm and had a lovely time. Mark and Tom were very welcoming. The toilet and shower facilities were very clean. The field itself had lots of room and the views were excellent. The top corner nearest the entrance is probably the best place to pitch with a relatively level area and the highest spot in the field giving the best views. The horse in the next field was very entertaining and friendly. Hett Village itself is very pretty and we had a nice wander round the duck pond. Nearby Spennymoor has a big Asda with cheap petrol as well as a number of other shops and takeaways.

Perfect CL site - just how they all should be!

This site is a perfect example of what a CL site should be! Tom & Mark gave us a very warm welcome and then left us to enjoy the peace and quiet that this site offers. We stayed for 8 nights and were the only campers there for 7 of the nights. The only sounds we heard were the lovely horse in the next field, a couple of cows on the farm and the occasional wood pigeon. The site has one toilet and one wet room/shower both of which were very pleasant (unlike some other CL’s we have stayed at!). The site is only 15 minutes from Durham and 20 minutes from the County Durham coast with Gateshead and Newcastle about 35-40 minutes to the north (if the traffic is behaving). It is only 5 minutes from the A1 and access is easy. There’s plenty of shop/supermarkets, take-outs and a couple of pubs within a short drive. We found the Chinese take away in Bowburn particularly good! It was our first trip camping without electric hookup and we didn’t miss it at all. With the sunny weather, the 100w solar panel kept the battery pretty much full despite using the TV most evenings. All in all, we rate this site 10/10. Mark & Tom, thank you for a lovely stay!

Pleasant site for a couple of days

As previous visitors have stated this site is sloping and also very very lumpy, we didn't think we would ever get level, however it just seemed to drop into the right holes and we were pitched evenly.  Not the owners fault but the site was absolutely sodden, more like a quagmire, very long grass and being wet wasn't ideal for getting in and out of cars etc. Returning from Durham to our van we did get stuck in the middle of the field due to the wetness of the field. Fresh water (in my opinion) was a little too far away, I couldn't even find it! walking around the large field the other caravanner on site didn't even bother to mention to me where it was and according to the owner Tom they come all the time, obviously not all caravanners are helpful (btw it was at the entrance of the site where all the facilities were) and I had to drag it up a hill.  Site is in a good spot for the area. Owner Tom was very nice and 'let us get on with it' which we prefer.  Only trouble is the weekend was ruined by heavy rain and winds all Easter weekend so will have to re-visit when the weather gets better but at £8 a night was a bargain. Tom informed us that they cut the grass in June/July so most of the time I suppose it will be left long, so if you like well manicured lawn type sites I would give this one a miss.

Wonderful CL

Stayed here in a motorhome in July. A warm welcome from Mark and a pleasant 2 nights here. So peaceful yet easy to get to Durham. Very clean toilet and shower.  Couldn't fault it. Great value for money.

Nice Site

I would re-iterate others views on the friendliness of the owners and the cleanliness of the toilet and separate wet room. The field is slightly sloping as described but as newbies we were able to level our caravan OK. Good site for walking our dog. Lovely views.  Easy to get to from the motorway and not far from the historic City of Durham (10 mins drive). As well as a pub within walking distance the local garage (about 1 mile away at Thinford) contains a Spar Shop where you can get groceries.  For a quite break or visiting Durham this site is worth looking at (Newcastle is also only 20mins on the train from Durham). I am local and used this site when I didn't have much time to travel but wanted to get away.  I would have no hesitation doing the same again. Forgot to say that TV signal was also good.

A warm welcome and peacefull site

Just home from our first stay at this excellent cl. Tom and Mark are very welcoming. The site has a slight slope but the views are fantastic. Although there is no electric hook up but batteries can be charged. All other facilities are top class. Looking forward to next visit.

A very welcoming site

We were the only visitors to this delightful site on a cold November weekend, but were made to feel extremely welcome. Facilities were excellent and spotlessly clean (toilet/sink and separate shower). Lovely large field with plenty of walking available from the site, Durham itself is 10 mins by car or a 5 mile off-road walk (map required!). Reasonable pub with food (carvery) within easy walking distance (about 0.5 mile). Will certainly be visiting again.

A lovely place to stay

A lovely CL. Pleasant and very friendly owner (and donkey!!) Gorgeous views over countryside. Immaculate shower and toilet facilities. There is a small children's play park in village which is less than a minutes walk away. Would recommend and definitely stay again.
