A Very Spacious CL
Fieldgate is a very wide, spacious site which extends some way back from the road, so all the pitches give you a lot of space. We were given a very warm welcome by Isabelle on our arrival, and given a choice of pitches bordering a rural public footpath and a field at the bottom. This area slopes down a bit, but most of the site is flat with several hard-standings.
The site is very much work in progress, and the owners have plans to provide showers and WC's, although at present there is only a single WC, charmingly decorated with little messages and knick-knacks, in a brick-built outhouse - which is more than most CLs provide. There is the usual single drinking water supply, but the chemical waste disposal is under a drain cover in the garden by the house; not very easy to use, and rather smelly and unhygienic. The charge of £17 per night is quite high, and more than many other better-equipped CLs.
The location just to the south of Chichester is very good, thoiugh. We were there for the Festival of Speed, which was close enough to be able to stomach the long queues into the Goodwood car parks. Chichester is a fine city to visit too, with plenty of character and a wonderful cathedral. Within 10-15 minutes there is also Chichester Gate, a big retail park with a Nandos, Cineworld, a J D Wetherspoons (for your WiFi needs), etc., if that floats your boat. The beaches, from Bognor to the Witterings are all shingle, but with the exception of West Wittering (car park £4.50 all day), quite peaceful and uncrowded. Finally, for a great experience, don't miss the exceptional Tangmere Aviation Museum, a truly wonderful display of a former WW2 fighter station.
