Excellent location

Great site for walkers and cyclists, close to the Manifold Trail and a short drive to Dovedale. Bus stop outside the site with regular service to Leek and Ashbourne. Great chippy just down the road and the Red Lion in Waterfall does good food too. Road noise indiscernible, slight hum from nearby cement works.

Title because we arrived to a site covered in snow and ice but left with no sign that it had ever been there! Generous size hardstand pitches with the bonus of hook-up, water and drainage to each pitch and surrounded by fields. Road noise evident during the day but didn't disturb us at night. As with previous reviews, a separate toilet would be a bonus and a little more attention to detail in regular provision of loo rolls etc would make this site even more welcoming. Ideal location for numerous visits: within no more than 30-40 minutes drive we visited Ashbourne, Dovedale, Ilam Country Park, Carsington Water, Tittesworth Reservoir, Tissington Trail, Longnor, Hartington & Sudbury Hall (NT). Enjoyed our visit very much.

Great value!

Just returned from a 4 night break at this CL. Access is easy - a short driveway with clear signage to the site, which is surrounded by fields with horses. Pitches are unallocated and all 5 are of good size with their own water, waste and hookup. They are well spaced and well maintained. There is a wet room with shower, loo and sink but to use these I'd advise taking your own loo roll, handtowel and soap as none of these are provided. We preferred to use our own caravan facilities - easy when it's a fully serviced pitch! The chemical loo point is next to the bins so easy to find. This site is in a great location for accessing cycle routes, Ilam Park and Dovedale. The village shop is well stocked with friendly staff. We had a meal at The Crown pub which was pleasant. We also used the village chip shop/cafe which was brilliant! You can even ring your order through and it'll be ready to collect by the time you walk down from the site - try the pizza, it's delicious!

Great value stay!

Stayed here for 10 nights at the beginning of August. Had a great holiday, ease of access to Alton Towers was excellent and to the other places we visited, also its a very easy site to find and good entrance access too, being close to main road. Great value stay for us, as no extra cost for children and we were a party of 2 adults and 4 children so at £12 a night this was a massive saving for us and this was our first time staying on a cl with children. Very good easy booking which I did all by email! The children enjoyed seeing the horses which are in fields beside the pitches. The pitches are tidy well maintained and hard standing. There is only one toilet which is within the shower and when using the shower the whole are through to the entrance door floods with water, my only issue was the toilet area is need of updating and cleaning. I purchased cleaning items and cleaned the area most days we were there. I had to supply toilet roll, handwash and a towel for our own use which I don't mind given the very reasonable cost of our stay. We were also very appreciative of a fellow caravanner in the pitch next to us who rescued our porch awning for us whilst we were out for the day when the wind got up. Great site and we would return if staying in the area!

Beautiful views!

Beautiful views - loved watching the horses and there were swallows galore! Hard standings made fixing the awning a bit tricky, but can see why they're needed. Surrounding grassed areas were beautifully maintained. Great that each pitch has own water and electric supply. Service point lights are possibly a little too bright at night. Some road noise at peak times, and gentle hum of the cement works, but this was outweighed by the location of the site, near to walks and trails, and the beauty of the scenery. A separate toilet may be good as it was very wet being in with the open shower. Shower area could do with some maintenance as it's looking a bit tired. Not bothered by anyone, or unnecessary rules, and a friendly greeting when paying. Don't miss the Churnet Valley Trail from Oakamoor to Denstone - fantastic!

One for the favourites list...

We stayed here for 2 nights in June 2013 and had the benefit of some cracking weather. The site is spotlessly clean and the pitches, all of which are hardstanding, are roomy enough to accommodate your van, car and full-size awning. Excellent chippy, pub and local store (which seems to stock just about everything!) are all within a 5 minute walk. EHU, drinking water and grey-waste at each pitch which for £12 per night is an absolute bargain. Wet room, loo and washing facilities are clean and easily accessed from the pitches. Dogs welcome at no extra cost and owners are friendly and welcoming. Easy access to the site with no troublesome hazards to negotiate, whatever the size of your outfit. Definitely one for the favourites list.

Weekend break

This site is the very best we have stayed on. Friendly welcome, easy pitching and very good facilities. Lovely walking area and a fantastic chip shop on the main road. Will make this a regular venue.

Great site

Have just spent 3 nights at this sight and thoroughly enjoyed. Will definitely visit again. Owners didn't seem to be around when I arrived so just parked up and got on with it, which was fine b y me. Lots of great walks from the site and good amenities nearby within walking distance, e.g., shop, 2 pubs, cafe / fish and chop shop. Site size as you would expect but pitch sizes more than generous. The road and cement factory seem very close but had no significant problems noise wise. Great views from all directions - loved seeing the horses, dogs, etc. The only slight downside was that there was only one toilet which was situated in the wet room so if the site is full then you may need to hold on before you can use the loo!!! if you do not have your own facilities. I note that other reviews have mentioned 'toilets' so maybe there were more but I never found them. Again other reviews say that not all the pitches are hard standing - they are now and are very level making it easy to set up. Would highly recommend.

Nice Site - will use again

The site sits close to the Staffs, Derbyshire border on the edge of the Peak district. It was easy to find, the access was good, and the pitches were all mostly level hardstandings. The location surrounded by fields of horses on 3 sides and the a barn on the other. There was a room at the end of the barn providing a wet room (shower and toilet) and adjacent room with a large sink, washing machine and tumble dryer. Outside is the toilet emptying point and bins. Each pitch was serviced by electric, water, and grey water disposal. The site is far enouigh from the road so that road noise is not a problem. There was some noise from the local cement factory. This was intermittent. Some days you could hear the beeps of lorrys reversing all night, and other days nothing. The site is on the outskirts of the village of Waterhouses, where ther is a chipshop, pubs, and local shop. (Didn't think much of the chips). Also a short walk away is access to the Manifold Bike Trail, with bike hire shop. This goes on for a good few miles and ther was even a small cafe a few mile up the trail. The site is also not far from Dovedale. For towns you have the choice of Leek one way (Aldi, Asda, Morrisons) or Ashbourne the otherway (Waitrose and Coop). Ashbourne is also the start of the Tissington Bike Trail, again with bike hire facilities). Matlock is not far away. Only complaints were a bit of noise from the cement factory (which didn't bother is much), blocked grey waste point, tumble dryer didn't heat up, and the wet room could do with a bit of maintenance. The owners were very approachable but left you alone to get on with it. Would definitely stay here again. Very good base for the area. A good site.
