4 nights in September
The main entrance to the site is signed through large red gates off the B4409 and is easy to find. (If a Sat Nav is set to Zip World it directs up a road off the B4409 to the working Penrhyn Quarry entrance and a track to the Zip World carpark and reception.) The site is quiet and very attractive with 2 CLs sharing the same facilities, both with 5 hardstanding pitches and EHUs. The upper CL has hill views, overlooks a meadow and is closest to the entrance. The lower CL is amongst trees and closest to the facilities. A short walk to the popular Zip World, where there is a modern cafeteria and observation platform, reveals the magnitude of the neighbouring slate quarry. Cycle Route 82 and the Snowdonia Slate Trail are easily accessed from the site with a section of Route 82 following the Slate Trail around the quarry spoil. A back gate from the site leads through attractive woodland to Bethesda which has amenities and bus stops but is not attractive. Holders of English and Scottish concessionary bus passes can buy a discounted 1bws day pass for £4.70 from the driver, there being no £2 cap on single journeys. There are regular buses following the A5 to Llandygai for NT Penrhyn Castle and Bangor (Arriva G8 & Traws Cymru T10) and in the other direction to Capel Curig, Betws-y-Coed and Corwen (T10). We used the pass to visit NT Penrhyn Castle and on the same day Betws-y-Coed, which are both good. On another day we took the bus to Bangor where Garth Pier and the walk SW to upper Bangor is nice but the Centre less so.
