Stunning Location

Just returned from 16 nights at Abergwynant. Firstly the site itself is in a perfect location if you like walking or on bikes. As previous reviews note it is a short walk through the adjoining woods to the Mawddach trail and then stunning scenery whichever direction you take. The woods alone take some exploring with several trails leading to various viewpoints on the hill. On a good day the views of the mountain (Cadair Idris)from the site are simply stunning but if like us you experience typical Welsh weather then you may only see the mountain occasionally when the clouds lift. We had to wait 10 days for a window in which to climb the mountain, the met office Mountain Forecast was invaluable to pick the right weather. The 'Pony Path' trailhead is a short drive away and our kids (7 and 12) managed the walk up the mountain using this path. 15 days were barely enough to explore the local area. Anglesey and the Lleyn Peninsula are within easy driving distance with some great beaches and sights to explore. But locally there are walks withing just a few minutes drive of the site, including of course Cadair Idris but our favourites included the Torrent Walk, Precipice Walk, The Blue Lake, Cregennen Lakes and the New Precipice Walk. Fairbourne beach is close by and at low tide there are literally miles of sand and our dog loved it. Parking at the far end (near the ferry) is free and with no dog restrictions The site itself is fairly spacious, there are 6 hookup points between 5 pitches, one water tap and one disposal point. Plenty of bins with recycling available. Even with the site full (and it was always full throughout our stay) there was plenty of room. The ground seemed well drained at least where we were despite several downpours. With rocks in the soil pegging was a challenge but not impossible. The site is set back from the main road down a long drive so zero road noise, just the constant sound of the nearby river. The adjoining field is where the access to the woods is and was used a few times during our stay by Outward Bound type groups for kayaking and camping but were not intrusive at all - actually great to see the kids enjoying the outdoors. A great welcome from Doris at the farmhouse and talking to some of the other people on site this is somewhere people come back to on a regular basis and we can see why. If coming from the midlands or further south then we read some advice about the A470 through the mountains being a difficult route so came in via Bala instead (A494) which seemed to take forever. But after driving the 470 during our stay we decided on going back that way and as long as you have a decent tow car it shouldn't be a problem - and saves a lot of time.
