Saving gas

I doubt I'm the first to come up with this but as a newbie caravanner - especially one with a dog - I thought I'd "share with the group"

On a CC site with elec hookup, we obviously run the caravan on electric heating rather than gas, except on the coldest of days, and even then only briefly (it gets too hot - the Knaus is VERY well insulated)

Obviously we use gas for cooking as the hob is 4 x gas, as is the oven & grille.

But the latest addition - and one which Ben the dog really approves of, is an electric blanket

Having run out of gas once, we now 'run' with 2 bottles (always a spare) but I really do need to look into those Safefil bottles which can be topped up ad hoc

Write your comments here...If a campsite owner decides they have to take action as the electricity bill is becoming to expensive and decide to go down the route of metering or just push the price up  then we all have to pay more because of the few who are taking advantage.

How is using service that has been provided and charged for taking advantage?

Write your comments here...so you are happy for other people to subsidise your over use of electricity, because that is what it would amount to

I don't see how it's possible to 'over-use' electricity in France, where the 'paid for' supply rarely exceeds 6 amps at an average cost of probably 3.50 euros per day.  Even when included as part of the pitch fee the supply is obviously calculated at average use, and charged accordingly.  The average barbecue or grill will run on a 6 amp supply (being 1400w or 1600w) so I can't see how that can be considered 'over-useage'.

Our reasons for using electricity for cooking aren't about 'taking advantage' but for the convenience of being able to cook outside in the heat, and the sun, using normal pans (not a barbecue) or a little electric oven.  You can't do that with a gas supply.

However, I can see that there are differing views on this, and as I personally don't consider that we over-use electricity, but do pay for what the owners wish to charge us for using it, then I shall leave others to their own opinions.

Over use?, is this definition skewed to 1 persons idea of 'how things should be done?' Why can't those with the view of 'my way is the only way' just stick to their way & stop harassing others, it's not acceptable. There are lots of things I personally don't do but others do those things, choice-go for it.

At a private site I was asked not to fill my water tank before leaving because they were on a meter. The notion was that the water supplied was only for use whilst on site.

fair comment, i would say....

really! so what if you arrived with a full tank and used it while on that site, surely you would be justified in refilling be for leaving.

thats true, youre right TG, i was just relating that we tend to arrive with an empty tank and fill on arrival, possibly topping up during our stay, but not much.....ie using what we put in the tank....
