Refillable Gas Systems

Ok here goes - being a Safefill owner that is the one I know most about and I like it because I can see the level of gas - it is lightweight and the saving over the price of Calorlite is substantial if you are a heavy user.  It makes even more sense to use a refillable if you are going across the water as you can refill there - whereas Calor is not obtainable (not anywhere I have been anyway).  There were three sizes but the grapevine said the smallest has been discontinued.

There is also Gaslow which until I saw a recent post I thought was a permanent fixed refillable probably more convenient for a Motorhomer, but I see they have free standing cylinders too.  When I looked at Gaslow it appeared to be far more expensive to set up for a caravanner than Safefill - but I could have been looking in the wrong place.

Gasit - is another I believe but I know nothing about it.

On the Safefill website is a retailer very close to me - it wasn't there a while back when i looked:-

Petrol Filling Station and SPAR, Cherry Orchard Way, Rochford, Southend-on-Sea SS4 1GP, UK

Has anyone used this for Safefill refilling?

If ok this makes choice for Safefill system a lot easier with this being so local.

Shedload, you won’t regret it. I do fill locally but I always check outlets where I am going. For instance, we went to the North Lakes not so long ago and found Ullswater Road Garage in Penrith filled Safefill. Wherever we have been, we can either fill up on route or near to our destination. More and more garages are coming on board now that the education is getting there. Garages are now seeing that the Safefill cylinder is a revenue stream. Let’s use them and encourage others to drop their predudice, educate themselves about Safefill and accept them at their outlet too.

I'm a Safefill convert, having two of their older red 15l bottles. All will be much better for Safefill owners with the change in the Petrol Retailers Association "Red Guide" to allow the filling of SAFEFILL bottles on the forecourt.

You speak of a Petrol Retailers Association "Red Guide" is it possible to get a copy of this anywhere??

Hi John. Shame they are still quoting what the OLD red guide says. UKLPG is an organisation made up of the ‘big boys’ in the LPG industry. They have tried every trick in the hook to kill Safefill off. They have failed but they still won’t lie down. Anyone reading sheet 26 may be excused for thinking that no one but a ‘ trained person’ can fill a Safefill cylinder, which is utter rubbish! They have the same fitting as a car and I don’t remember ‘trained staff’ filling gas powered cars up all day long. It’s just another tactic to throw yet another banana skin in the path of Safefill which will continue its march to full acceptance whether UKLPG like it or not!!

Merve, the link provided seems to go to the current 'red guide' on the Petroleum Enforcement Liaison Group (PELG) website. Page 61 covers LPG but still says not to fill portable cyclinders.  If this isn't the current one do you have a link to the most up to date 'red guide'?

Thanks Merve.

Further to my finding local filling station on Safefill web site, email response from Safefill to share -

  • Thank you for your enquiry.
  • All the 'appointed refills', on our refill map, have been contacted by us and have agreed to fill Safefill cylinders. However, situations and policy can change so we always recommend that prospective customers ensure that they are happy with where they can fill and the refill situation. We have spoken to the SPAR forecourt fairly recently and they were happy to fill, but for your own peace of mind, if they are close to you, please call in and confirm this.
  • To explain a little about the current situation, regarding the filling of Safefill cylinders, we have attached a recent article, published by the PRA (Petrol Retailers Association ). The Red Guide, as mentioned in the article, is the guidance for forecourts so we are very hopeful, when this information is more widely known, that more refills will be available for Safefill cylinders.
  • We hope this information helps but if you require anything further, please do not hesitate to contact us.

I'll call in to confirm and let you know response. Noted comment about filling up on route or near to destination, but this is a bonus if it pans out. Anyway, looking good for a Safefill purchase.

LPG for cooking and heating (as used in a MH or C/Van) carries much less duty and VAT than that used for vehicle propulsion.  Where can I find a list of suppliers of LPG for heating and cooking, that will supply me?

Posted on 14/10/2017 13:41

I can't help with a list but I know Andys Gas in Bristol sells LPG for recreational use at 42p litre

May I be the first on CT to congratulate Safefill on their success in reaching the finals of the APEA awards for innovation! No more than you deserve Safefill- you have made it possible for thousands of campers, caravanners, boaters etc to access much cheaper gas via your cylinders. Thank you from one very happy customer.

Hi Merve.  No I haven't taken the plunge yet.  I still have two Calorlite bottles with gas in, so it's not urgent.  I'd probably go for the middle size - it's the footprint that's the main problem with regards to getting it into the locker.  I want to get as near as I can to the weight of the calorlite bottles.

Bad news for me.  I was speaking to someone last Saturday who was another convert to Safefill.  He also now has a Bailey van with side gas locker.  He has confirmed that you can't get two safefill bottles in the locker because of the footprint.  He bought two when he had a previous van and now just uses one. The question now is, can I get one safefill and one ordinary Calor bottle?
