Dash Cam

I guess we are all tired of the countless posts about wi fi or early arrival on site. Well this, I think is a brand new topic, which could save an enormous amount of money.

We are aware of the scam, "Cash for Cash" where someone, maybe not be insured reverses into us on purpose to make a false claim against us. Also in an accident which is not your fault, it is often difficult to prove the other party is at fault.

I have recently got a dash cam in my car to support against the above problem. There are many products available, mine is an Amacam costing just under £40. also I fitted a 32Gb Micro SD card which will record up to 6 hours of HD video. The clarity is good as it is possible to read Reg. numbers of cars ahead.

It goes without saying the potential here for saving big time money, in the event of an accident, Does'nt bear thinking about not just cost of damage tothe veichle, but also the caravan, especially the loss of no claims bonuses.

Just an add on here, I also see some insurance companies will give up to 10% discount on premiums where a dash cam is fitted. There's a thought, maybe the club insurance may like to consider this. Give this one some thought fellow members.

I have had one fitted for about 18 months. They are useful in any accident where you are not to blame not just crash for cash scams. Having worked in insurance claims it is clear that those in the wrong often lie through their back teeth and to protect your self you need the filmed proof. The downloaded evidence is a godsend when you are faced with false claims.

I had a Nextbase 402G for Christmas and I tried it out today and just watched the results. Don't think I will be up for an oscar anytime soon!!! My main purpose is the record routes for future reference and sharing but the A1 is not quite the Fern Pass!!

Is there such a thing on the market as a combined unit which has a dash cam and a reversing camera?  With a reversing camera, dash cam, sat nav and phone the amount of bits of wiring is getting out of hand.

In reply to Biggarmac there are several sat navs available with reversing camera inputs, Also Sygic do a software satnav for mobile phones which uses the phone as a dash cam works very well as i have it on mine, obviously phone needs to be mounted facing out of the windscreenSmile. Use left and right arrows to navigate.

Pleased I am not the only one who is geekish enough to do that David! I have been using a Mobius camera to do this. It is not a dedicated Dashcam, but does the job, and I can also use it to record bicycle trips etc.

I have many hours here on youtube. Next step is to edit the video into a more watchable form.

There are a multitude of Dash Cams available ranging from excellent to the down right awful. When choosing one you are entering a world given to extraordinary claims and promises and in truth you only find out when you need its output most of all and sadly a high percentage do fail to deliver. I have used such devices for a long time and have purchased the 'cheap direct from China with no support' to the high street purchase and sadly none performed as they should. So last year I decided to spend time looking and searching the web for some user experience info and from using the You Tube vids from "Tech Moan" to a forum dedicated to the subject Dashcamtalk.com and as a result ended up purchasing a model that produces the results is reliable with UK supply and support and a very knowledgable supplier who does go the extra mile to help and oh yes knows his stuff.
