A 'Three' 12GB/12month PAYG data SIM is the best I've found for use in 'feel-at-home' locations. Currently £30 direct from 'Three'. (The 3-2-1 tarrif won't work  in a mifi or for tethering abroad).

Because of the 2 month limitation when abroad, you might need a couple of SIMs. (12 month doesn't start until activated).

(3GB/3month data Sims also available, but not such good value at around £12 on ebay).

It comes into play if you use the SIM for 2 complete months in any 12 in a feel-at-home country.  However this (should) reset if you use the SIM in a non feel-at-home (not necessarily UK).  Some people claim that as long as you do not use it for a couple of days each month that's OK, but I wouldn't trust that claim until I had tested it.

It's all a bit messy, and you can find varying info in different places on 'Three's site.  To quote them  "feel-at-home is intended for short holiday or business trips .....not for long term use abroad".    Hence sugggestion of multiple SIMs Innocent.

Vic

Can you help me with this. Am I right that the SIM has to be activated before you leave the UK to take advantage of the Feel at Home? Does it come in micro sim size so I could put it in my phone and use that as a WiFi point? ( Margaret has a phone so its not as though we would be without a phone whilst using it for data).

Thanks

David

In theory you do not have to activate the sim in the UK but if there is an issue with the sim then it would be easier to sort out in the UK. You will lose a couple of days out of 365 but could save a fortune in phone calls and leave with peace of mind.

The sim comes in a push out so canbe used as any of the three different sizes with ease. No reason that I can think of that you cannot use the phone as a wifi point.

Thanks Camdoon, seems to make sense. On another issue I notice that the offer mentioned by Vic above that Three say it can't be used to thether your mobile phone to use it as a mobile hot spot. So how do you get round that. Surely its no different from using it in a MiFi device. Which even way you cut it you are using the same data!!!
