An appeal to Safefill users - and others!

I do not wish this thread to deteriorate into a debate about Safefill Cylinders and the whys and wherefores of various other makes. This is not a promotion of any product.  So please, if you are not a Safefill User, (unless you wish to assist your fellow campers, Motorhomers and caravanners which would be very welcome!) do not comment. This thread is about the effort by the ‘Leisure public’ who use Safefill cylinders to increase the chances of more fill points which can only be a positive move. Morrisons moved to facilitate Safefill after I suggested we all write to them and ask about filling a perfectly legal cylinder. People power does work and it can be a powerful force when applied. Can anyone who uses, or is about to purchase a Safefill, or would like to see fill points open up nearer to them or just simply wants to help their fellow caravanners-  please take 5 minutes to email the following Service Station Groups about filling Safefill cylinders now that the Red Guide has been amended to encompass them and Morrisons have allowed their filling.  You will get the details from the web.  I have only chosen 2 at the moment- more will follow. If we do this as a group, we can change minds as we did with Morrisons. The first is Penny Petroleum which is based in the north of England and has 42 sites I believe. They are on Twitter so that’s another way of contacting them and applying gentle pressure! The second and much larger concern is Euro Garages Group. Please help. Safefill are too small to get out there and visit everyone but they are doing their best I can assure you. Can you please post when you have sent your communication and  any results you receive to the thread Thank you so much . We need those fill points!

I saw what you did there 🙂

I’m just a naive nit-wit that expects places like this (forum) to have a friendly atmosphere, but too often it’s quite the opposite. I think the deleted posts speak for themselves.

I’ ve never met you Freddy, but I fear we both have similarly low levels of intelligence.  Unlike someone like Cornersteady for example, who a mere  24 hours ago was professing he didn’t know what Safefill was, this was in one of the Deleted User posts.  Now, only one day latter he seems to be quite the expert, on not only Safefill but the alternatives as well. I just wish I could acquire knowledge that quickly, but I know my limitations.

Me I use Safefill not as a protest against Calor but because it saves me money.  Other people the calculation will be different

PS Don’t think that this forum, is full of unfriendly posters.  Just think of it as a form as therapeutic care in the community, for those less fortunate then ourselves.

Ok I assume it is not like giving out milk, I assume you do not go with your empty gas bottle and they pour it out from one container into another. The LPG will need a storage tank and the necessary pump and nozzle to fit your bottle with all the required safety procedures.

If a petrol station do not have this then it will need to be installed, this would cost money, would there be a return on that money. I can only think of one station in my known area that sells LPG. I would suppose that if others wanted to follow then some installation and costs would follow?

If a petrol station has an LPG pump, it needs to provide nothing else for a Safefill, or other refillable, owner to fill up.  Nozzles are generally standard in a country, the cylinders are designed to be used with the standard UK nozzle, you just attach it and away you go. Only takes a few minutes.

The nozzles do differ in other countries so if you go abroad you need to carry a selection of adapters, all readily available.

In our case, we have a fixed system with 2 cylinders, we have a filling point fitted in the side of the gas locker, same type of thing that MHs have.  We just attach the pump nozzle to this to fill up.  The cylinders are strapped in the gas locker, just like Calor cylinders.

There is plenty of info regarding refillable LPG cylinders available on the  Internet.

As CY said a few pages back, saving money on gas is not the only advantage. For those of us who want to have gas easily available when touring abroad, a refillable is the way to go.

I don’t get it. What we have here is someone (Merve) trying to help the ‘lot’ of other Safefill users, and he’s getting a hard time?

If Merve was truly non-partisan and simply trying to encourage fuel stations to provide LPG filling pumps he would do just that rather than keep promoting only one of many refillable LPG products.  Others that would benefit include bi-fuel cars and other vehicles, plus Gaslow, Alugas, GasIT and other LPG container owners.

So now is the perfect opportunity for you to explain the comparative features and benefits of all the alternative systems.  The stage is yours .

PS I have no particular axe to grind, I happen to own a Safefill bottle mark 1  but I am more  interested in the contents than the container

Changing a bottle every 2-3 years, you would have to be nuts to consider a refillable bottle.   I can get through the equivalent of 6kg every 2-3 weeks.  So a refillable bottle makes a lot of sense to me.

So I have two questions.   Why are there several posters on this thread, who assume that their reality is my reality?

second question, why are these same posters even participating in this thread, when it is not relevant to them and they contribute nothing?

Thanks Boff. Your comments are totally accurate. Why indeed are they on here? They have no interest other than causing concerns that have been put to bed by greater men than them! I asked politely for them to stay off the thread but I guess it was just too much for them. They can’t cause trouble if they are not on it!!

indeed I didn't but was educated by the answers to my questions including the ones that told me of other similar products. I really don't see mon colonel what I have posted to suggest I'm an expert, perhaps you have posted too swiftly?smile

Are you suggesting I shouldn't be posting?

Boff was agreeing with me, Merve.

I'm not sure who you mean by 'them'. It’s not the nicest of terms.

I could do so Boff but there is no point.  They are all refillable LPG cylinders.  They all have Overfill Protection Devices (OPD's).  Most are intended for fixed installation and are filled through a remote pipe / fitting but some are intended to be filled in the same way as your bottle.  I have twin Gaslow but would be just as happy with other makes intended to be used in a fixed installation.

Posted on 16/08/2018 22:09

Of course Gaslow offer direct fill cylinders.  I know they used to give dire warning about direct filling however obviously times change.  Personally if I was looking at a fixed system I would look at Gasit, because they are generally cheaper for the same thing.  As far as I know my Bil and Sil are happy with their Alugas system in their MH.

and they say that those that can do & those that can't teach .......

I've never seen a Safefil in the flesh, but it's bl00dy obvious that you fill your bottle using the same tackle as you would to fill your car's LPG tank
