Not strictly on topic but in terms of compassion I cannot believe how fox hunting is banned yet the barbaric sport of bull fighting continues. Evidently, in Spain they value tradition and sport more highly than humanity.

Yes, it doesn't 'sit' well does it! However, let's take things one step at a time! Bull fighting, cock fighting and even hare coursing are banned but with regard to the latter it still happens, particularly around Lincolnshire! The thing is that most of these criminals come here from all around Britain to carry out this so called 'sport'!

Unless we are all Vegans, we cannot condemn others for dispatching animal life for the table.

Do we not eat meat or fish or wear animal skin.  Most of us do.

Beef, Pork,Venison, Fish and Birds are slaughtered in our name for food.  It has always been thus.

Let's live in the real world - Anybody can be a Vegan if they want, it's not for me, but I respect them for their chosen lifestyle .

As a non - Vegan it would be dishonest of me to support this petition. -- Sorry.

To be honest it's nothing to do with being vegan or not! They, vegans, do not eat flesh or other animal products full stop! I do, I will even catch fish to eat! It's about the needless slaughter of endangered and threatened wildlife in the name of sport! That is totally different and for that reason I have supported the petition. I don't consider myself to be hypocritical or disingenuous and of course I do respect others and their views even when they are wrong!wink

We breed animals specifically for food, we also breed hundreds of thousands of game birds for the gun of which many thousands escape into the wild.  We do not breed waders for food people are just depleting the numbers for selfish purposes

Calling hunting/killing animals sport in this day and age is rather contradictory. There is nothing sporting in taking a creature which is either confined with no escape in terms of the bullring or stocked small pond, or so young and immature as to be positively too niaive to run away such as pheasants bred for the gun. All are "sitting ducks" something frowned upon in the past as being unworthy of being called sport, and derided by the true skilled hunter, who would kill to feed, or to protect crops. Differing degrees of cruelty, exploited either for blood lust in the case of bull fighting, or big business/serious money in other cases. Few societies are now dependent upon true hunter/gathering, so it is more honest to call something by its true nature.

Proper game fishing and stalking is highly skilled, and even I can relate to the underpinning requirements to do it successfully, even if hating the end product to a greater or lesser extent. In the past, giving a creature a "sporting chance" underpinned a lot of the etiquette, hence double barrelled guns rather than pump action. Two shots only, by time of reload, bird may have been lucky enough to get away!

Just a word of caution please, about this thread. A petition has been posted which is there for information if there are likeminded people who might want to sign. If we wish to stay within sprit of the Forum T&C's it would be best to treat this thread just as a heads up that the petition is available. If we are going to turn this thread into a general discussion of hunting, shooting and fishing it will end in tears and will be closed.

Thanks

David
