Posted on 12/01/2017 18:14 by JVB66When we use Halifax debit card for BIG purchases we advise the local branch beforehand our main branch is Kensington, and have not had a problem

Previously we have informed them about unusual transactions, but they were not that interested.
Last time we bought a car, the Smart, there was no problem, but the amount was way smaller.
When we bought the Volvo, 10 years back,we paid over £35k by debit card and the bank did not bat an eyelid.
I think they must have tightened up on things since then. This was less than the Volvo, but the limit per transaction with Halifax now seems to be £25 or £30k. They will not tell you. They just keep declining the transaction!
9 years back we paid £16k for the van, again they were not interested.
Ah well, at least it is all sorted now.

Posted on 12/01/2017 19:59 by IanHEnjoy the new car, KjellNN.......I really like the look of the Toureg and it sounds like it performs too.

Thanks, there is a LOT of new stuff to learn about!
Feeling a bit sad, our poor old XC90 will no doubt go to the car auction, just hope it finds a nice owner. Whoever buys it will get 1 year old really good tyres, and a good going car, but it does have some problems which they will not be aware of, and which Volvo could not diagnose, let alone fix, hence our decision to bite the bullet and dispose of it.
This is quite a sad day for us as loyal Volvo owners. We have driven only Volvos since 1972, this will be the first time we have not owned a Volvo in almost 45 years.
DD still has our old V40, still going strong after 14 years, but when it goes she will also be switching to a VW, probably a Golf.

Well into the month of January now, so sat in the corner sobbing & hugging my wallet And all because it's MOT, service, Road Fund, and Insurance time !! at least I'm content with it and have no real wish to change it { Unless I win the Lottery, big time, of course
}
At least I'll know the motor will, God Willing, get me down to N.E.C. next month, and home again with a bag of Snowdonia's Best as well as a load of paper-work for the filling of my re-cycle Grey Bin !!
Take care out in this 'orrid slippery stuff please !

Actual cost was £380. Please with labour costs but the front shockers were £82 each with VAT. Very dear but when I checked on line I could not see any cheaper prices.
I trust my mechanic to do his best and play fair which he does.
Will have to get the tyre replaced today.

Posted on 11/01/2017 20:45 by WherenextWe passed a farm with a CL sign within a mile of turning out of the car park at Chew Valley Lake, heading south towards Bishop Sutton in order to turn left oonto the A386 towards Bath. I've looked in the CL section but can't find it. It seemed to be set in an orchard (maybe Brue's place
). You'd be able cycle around the lake plus some birdwatching on both this lake and Blagdon Lake (bitterns supposedly breed on Chew). Be interested myself if anyone knows what its called.

With the "new" car we now will have service (and later MOT) at the beginning of September, Insurance still 1st March, and VED now 1st January.
We are losing almost half of January on the new car, and half of January on the old car, so not ideal, but it will no doubt pale into igsnifigance in the overall costs of ownership over the next 10? years +
This WILL be our last big towcar as I am now almost 75.
That is more than a bit depressing, and best not dwelt on!

Posted on 12/01/2017 09:21 by milliehullMy washing machine has died. .
The engineer can't come until next Tuesday afternoon and even then they might not be able to repair it immediately, if at all. It Is 8 years old - I see a big bill coming up.
. Luckily I am up to date with the washing at the moment as daughter's washing machine is also playing up. I might have to ask DIL if I can take some washing over there at the weekend.
Glad you have got your XTrail repaired EasyT. We have one which we find invaluable when towing. Great robust vehicle.

W, many years ago, when Mrs M's parents lived in Bishop Sutton there was a very basic CL at the fruit farm just outside the village - that might be the one you spotted though I've no idea if it's still open these days!
The Chew Valley AS is a bit of an acquired taste by all accounts, but if you're in the C&CC there is a CS at West (or it might East) Harptree also very convenient for the lake.
If you visit at the right time of year there's also a highly regarded quiz night at Cameley Lodge, about 15 minutes drive from there (winking emoji thingy which I still can't do on this tablet!)
