PYG Phones

Prompted by some posts on another thread, just wondering what folks pay average per month if they use a PYG phone. My sister used a PYG sim, in a relic of a Nokia, up to Xmas. She seldom if ever phoned me, it was always me who had to phone her.

I gave her my old iPhone 5s, all checked out and reset, and convinced her to take out a sim only contract. It’s for 12 months, gives her free calls to same network, 1500 minutes to other networks and land lines, unlimited texts and a whopping 6G of data, which she can tether her iPad to if there’s no WiFi. Unused allowances roll over to next month. This is all for £9 per month. I thought it a good deal. Is it?🤔

Depends entirely on the user. I have used £27 in the last 12 months using an ASDA PAYG sim. For me better than £108 only use for calls and texts. For internet I use available wifi or small mobile router with Tablet.

If at home always use landline as calls to other land lines and to mobiles are included in my phone and broadband at £26 a month.

So without knowing usage it is hard to say. Somebody said they had a £6 contract.

I bet OH hasn't spent a fiver in 12 months!

Yes, that sounds like a good deal to me, TDA, especially with the roll over.👍🏻

My sim only contract gives me unlimited calls and texts to any network/landline and a humungous data allowance of 10gb p/m. However, I pay nearly twice as much as your sister but it suits me.

It also means I don’t need to bother struggling with the vagaries of site wifi as I tether my Pad which I couldn’t on PYG.😄

As you say TW. Your phone and mobile wifi costs you about £200 a year. Our phones and wifi using mobile router and also one CC site wifi account will cost us about £105 a year. It is simply whatever suits.

Yep, horses for courses. I enjoy the freedom of not having to worry whether I’ve enough allowance to last or about any costs I may incur.

There is, too, depending on the network supplier, a difference between contract and PYG for using mobiles in Europe, both in countries covered and costs/terms, which could affect some folk.

I have a sim only contract with Virgin for my Samsung S6 Edge. Unlimited calls and texts, including 4G, plus 12gb of data, all for £12/month.

Me too TW. No additional costs and when my 12 month 24gb card runs out I have another ready to slot into router wink

As far as the PAYG phone goes buying for a set amount of minutes each month would not really suit my usage patterns which is a consideration. For 8 months of the year I am based at home so will use landline with included calls and so little mobile phone usage. Main phone usage is during 4 months of holidays.

I pay 8p a minute for calls and 5p per text. For somebody making daily 15 minute calls it would be expensive. My most common call on holiday is 'Fliss where are you?'

If you catch them right, Virgin have some very good offers. We use our smart phones as Sat Navs, ebook readers and have watched films and listened to radio/talking books, so for us a cheap contract works well. Use them for tethering on no WiFi Sites as well.

I am with Virgin and have a monthly contract rather than PAYG. It costs £12.39 a month and includes calls and text and 4gb  of data, any unused rolls over to the next month. I could reduce those costs if I decided to have less data but its handy when we are away in the van and the wifi is not so good.

EE £10pm rolling SIM. Every third month I can add a free boost of either 500M data or 30 minutes. I've currently got unlimited texts, 300 mins and, from memory, 5Gb data. Rollover of previous months unused data as well.
