Low blood pressure after hip replacement

Hi everyone.

Currently sat in a hospital bed after having a total hip replacement done yesterday afternoon. I have been unable to do any standing or walking due to very low blood pressure which doesn’t seem to want to get back to normal and apparently the best thing for it  is just to drink plenty of fluids.

Can anybody put my mind at rest after either having a new hip done or having low blood pressure please.

I had my 49th birthday yesterday if that makes any difference

Regards

Keith

I know for a fact that dehydration and anaesthetics can cause low BP, Keith. Give it time and follow the medics' orders.smile

Bet  you're  non - too -  chuffed  with  the  birthday  present  tho',  like  lots  of  us,  you'll  soon  see  it's  all  for  the  best !!  And  any  cakes  will  have  been  checked  out  by  the  latest  tech  in  the  kitchen.

Sorry,  K O,  now  I've  got  'the  silly'  out  of  my  system  the  only  folks  I  know  who  had  a  FULL hip  replacement  had  a  day  or  three  in  bed  before  they got  a  visit from  the  Physio  department.

Nephews  Micro  surgery  on  knee  replacement  gave  him  little  bed  time  but  involved  two  sticks  &  a  dreaded  " Physio's  Warning" --  i.e.  OBEY  or  you'll  get  a  visit  from  us  and  the  Personal  Body Torturer  as  well.

I'd  not  fret  to much  about  the  BP,  you're  in  the  best  place  for  T L C   no  matter  what  the  tabloids  say !!  Stiff  upper  lip  &  keep  us  informed  how  you  are  going  on.

All sorts of things happen after a major op, I had my first hip done three years ago, and had two blood transfusions a catheter fitted and a week in hospital, I was up and walking with the physios on day two though, back at work after six weeks

Other hip done three months later, op on Friday morning discharged noon Sunday, back at work after 4 weeks, totally different, same hospital and surgeon

I take medication for high blood pressure and I noticed when I had my hip replaced that my blood pressure was lower than usual. I expect they are concerned that if they get you out of bed too soon that if the BP is low you could go dizzy and fall and undo all the good work of the operation!!! I am sure it will stabilise and as soon as it does you will be out of bed with the Physio in the wings.

Thanks for the replies.

physio tried to get me up last night and I managed to put some weight on my leg before getting light headed and then passing out!

BP slightly up today so hopefully will see some improvement as the day goes on.

I have low blood pressure - a normal reading for me is between 90/60 and 100/65. Post surgery (not hip replacement though) my bp dropped to 60/35 for quite a few days and I wasn't allowed to do much. Your body is in shock from surgery and needs time to recover. Plenty of fluids and don't worry about it. Things will return to normal in due course. I think day three was my turning point

Thanks everyone,

Managed to get up and have a wash today by myself. Feeling a lot more positive now.

I have been for an x-ray before lunch and now I’m able to sit in the chair beside the bed which is much better.

Occupational therapy have paid a visit and will be back later.

Keith

Glad you are feeling more positive about it. I won't be long before you are feeling the benefit of having the hip replaced, indeed if you are not feeling those benefits already. You always feel better when you get home which is probably only a couple of days away.
