thinking of trying the coast to coast cycle ride as a challenge for my 70th year!  Just wondered if any of CT Members have any experience of this or any other long distance cycle ways

My OH did Trans Pennine Trail a couple of years ago OP. In three days as well, so just a couple of stop overs. I will ask him for tips and contact you via Chat!Happy

There are other coast to coast routes, think one goes from somewhere in Lakes to Sunderland, good bit shorter than TPT.Happy

All the best with your endeavours Oneputt.

Really I do wish you well - would this be to raise funds for Charity?

I did the coast to coast cycle ride about 7 years ago. We did Whitehaven to Sunderland over 3 days. We chose the mountain track route as we were all riding off roaders. There is a road route if you prefer. I must say it was brilliant but day one was very hard! Day 3 was mostly downhill on cycle paths and was very enjoyable eventually gliding into Sunderland marina.  If I did it again I'd try and take more time over it but at the time we only had a long weekend to do it in. We used a 'bike bus' based in Stanley, Co Durham from memory that took us over to Whitehaven and then each day picked up our luggage and dropped it off for us at the next pub we stayed in.

I'm not a great cyclist, I went along for the crack with the lads but I'm pleased to say I've done it the once. Certain climbs almost killed me off! Have a go yourself and enjoy.

Very brave thing to do, oners. I wish you well in your efforts. Walking coast to coast was enough for me! Wink. Use left and right arrows to navigate.

Thanks for the info guys and girls, Mrs One reckons we should walk the South Downs way again or even try the walking coast to coast.

Don't let your age put you off, it's how fit you are that matters. My dad was 67 at the time when he did it with us, mind you he was super fit and had done serious cycling all his life. Anyway, if you're retired you might have more time to spread it over a week or two.

I did the C2C about 6 years ago, Whitehaven to Sunderland.

The 'official' route adds a good few miles as it goes off road or onto side roads wherever possible, thus avoiding the busier (but more direct) main roads.

I made Alston (on top of the Pennines) my stopover (put the caravan on a site there......very basic!) and MrsH was my support, meeting me in Keswick and outside Penrith on the first day and at the cafe at the start of the Waskerley Way (Stanhope) on the second day.

If you google 'C2C bike ride' or similar there is an excellent web site thst offers loads of information.

It was hard work but very worthwhile.

Thanks Ian for the good info, certainly look at the website.  Done several long distance walks using the van but this would be the first venture on bike.
